Post Welcome to the World of Astrology!

:sunny:Welcome to the world of Astrology, of the Sun, Moon and all that surrounds them and make up our universe.:sunny:

Astrology has a history that goes back to ancient Babylon, where people first began to notice how the movements in the sky were related to the seasons. This diverse field is like an age-old tree with widely-ranging branches, some of which we will be shedding light on below. As Astrology has been in practice in many different parts of the world, it has diverged into different fields such as: Indian Vedic or Jyotish Astrology, Chinese Astrology and Western Astrology, to name some of the most popular fields in practice today. On this forum, we mainly concentrate on Western Astrology. For beginners, we recommend to start out with Natal Astrology, which will give a good insight into the Basics of Astrology entailing the four pillars of: Signs, Planets, Houses and Aspects.

This expansive field, which has been in practice since time immemorial and has periodically evolved, is based on two methods of interpretation: Traditional and Modern. The basic difference between the two is that, whilst Traditional Astrology rests on the first seven planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; Modern Astrology also includes the more contemporary, so-called 'outer planets': Uranus (discovered 1781), Neptune (1846) and Pluto (1930).

Astrology involves the study of a chart, which is divided into mathematical sections of houses and signs, both of which house planets, in turn. Of the many house-systems used, the most common ones are Placidus, Koch and Equal for Natal Astrology, and Regiomantanus, which is used mostly in Horary. To delve deeper into the different astrological house-systems, you may visit Wikipedia. It is recommended to use the one that you can most identify yourself with.

At Astrologers' Community, we welcome all those who are dedicated to Astrology, both fledgling and established Astrologers. Our common objective here is to share our astrological knowledge and experiences with eachother. The forum rules reflect how best to go about this, whilst the index page lists up all the forums that are there to communicate with eachother in. Please also visit our Education Board for some interesting and informative material for self-study.

Let us now take a closer look at the various Branches of Astrology:

Natal Astrology
This is the best-known area of astrology, for it deals with casting the horoscope for the person in question (referred to as: native), based on his date, place and time of birth. The chart thus cast is used to study the personal characteristics, strengths, weaknesses and talents of the native. The primary use of Natal Astrology is to show the various facets of a person's nature, who they are and how they are likely to react to certain situations. In this way, it is used as a tool for understanding one's innate self and for self-development.

Predictive Astrology
This area concentrated on indicating the likely trends and developments in the future, but can also be used to study the past. The techniques used here vary from studying the Transits (momentary movement of planets) to Planetary returns and Progressions (which deal more with developments over a longer span of time). All these techniques based on the movement of planets at a given point in time (in the past, present or future) are applied against the backdrop of the natal chart. For more on some predictive techniques such as planetary returns and solar arcs, visit our Education board.

Relational Astrology
This branch of Astrology is used to understand how any two natives relate to each other, or, in other words, how compatible they are. There are various techniques used to find this out such as Synastry: comparison of two natal charts, or Composite: a 'natal' chart of the relationship itself, which looks at the relationship as a separate entity. In both types, accentuation of signs, the houses the planets fall into as well as the aspects between the planets will reflect the compatibility and harmony between the two natives in question and their relationship with eachother.

Horary Astrology
With this area of astrology the question takes centrestage rather than the person asking it (called the querent). One of the oldest branches of Astrology, said to be an off-shoot of Vedic Astrology, it is based on traditional Astrology, where the first seven planets are taken into consideration. The chart is created for the moment, where the moment corresponds with the time the querent came up with the question. It is erected in the same manner as a birth chart, but leaves all birth details of the querent out of study. For more on Horary basics and Horary Sports Astrology, visit our Education board.

Medical Astrology
This branch of Astrology uses the natal chart to study the basic physical and psychological constitution and health of the native. The planetary placements in signs and houses as well as the aspects they make with eachother are usually indicative of certain physical and psychological strengths and weaknesses. Different signs of the zodiac are assigned different parts of the body, physiological processes, ailments and healing methods. Use of current transits in relation to the natal chart could be reflective of certain indications of proneness to injuries, health problems and development of the native's health in general. Karmic Astrology
The study of this branch of Astrology rests on the theory or re-incarnation and the evolution of the soul. It is said to have its roots in the Indian practice of Hinduism. Karmic Astrology sheds light on the connection between the native's past life and his present one, revealing the values and unfinshed tasks (karma) the native has brought into this life.

Mundane Astrology
The word 'mundane' comes from the Latin word mundus: "the world". It is used to study the affairs surrounding a nation such as its past, present or future. It can tell us how a nation stands in relation to the worldly events developing around it, and about the affairs of the world in general.

Relocational Astrology
such as Astro*carto*graphy, is location-based astrology, which uses the traditional astrological method of relocating the chart for where the person lives at that time. It involves recalculating the chart using the new location, where the new chart shows what the native's life would be in the new location. It is mostly used as a technique for individuals who want to move to a different place/country other than their birthplace and need to know how they would relate to that particular place as well as what events would most likely confront them there.

A thought that we would now like to leave you with is: Stars impel, they do not compel.
