FAQ is a closed *sticky* and is not for additional comments as it contains forum rules.

Have you looked in our Recommendations forum?

May I suggest you read the 'welcome to the world of astrology’ and other ---sticky' at the top of this forum? It has some great explanations, links etc. At the top of every forum there are lots of ‘stickys’ which explain matters in that forum, along with guidelines & tips

There is a 'plethora' of information on AW, espec in the 'stickys' at the top of every forum, our Education forum and Recommendations forum to. Plus we have a good search feature,[but not foolproof obviously, so try here first] bit like google using keywords – initially select advanced and try just selecting 'titles' rather than posts or you'll get too many threads. If this doesn’t get results then try google

For a free online ephemeris I use this one

This is predominently a Traditional astrology site. The links I have posted above are for Modern Astrologer. The basic differences are that Trads don't use the outer planets uranus, Neptune or Pluto, whereas moderns do..

there has been a discussion on this matter here...

are outer planets generational or personal

Re: Methods of chart interpretation

Thanks Astrologer50; I've been totally curious to find out the difference between the two and why and didnt know where I could read about it.

This should be enlightening!

Re: Methods of chart interpretation

I think that the dominant quality (mutable, fixed, cardinal) and element (air, fire, earth, water) should be calculated, it reveals a lot about a person's fundamental approach to life.

The Sun, Moon and Ascendant are quite important in getting a good understanding of personality.

Look for the tightest aspects first to know the most important characteristics in someone. Unaspected planets (by major aspects) tend to go to extremes psychologically and will behave very strongly predictively even if it is an inner planet.

Planets out of bounds (declination over 23 degrees 27 minutes either North or South) will go to extremes in the planet's domain, this can be either good or bad. People with many planets out of bounds definitely make their mark on the world, they are not bound by the traditions of society.

I would look for planets making a close aspect (especially conjunction and opposition) to the nodes and vertex to better understand a person's destiny or fate and special gifts from past lives.

Stelliums in a house are important in showing a life focus and special interest/gifts.

Angular planets are very strong in a person's psyche (especially if near the IC).

I also find the astrological sentence method mentioned earlier very useful in interpretation.

Thumbs up For all Newbies - Basic lesson - How to read the Natal Chart

I find this very helpful specially...

The Lesson 9

The Aspects -a connection or relationship between two or more planets. This connection always alters the interpretation of the planets and signs involved. When planets are in aspect to each other, their interpretations must be blended according to the nature of the aspect.

This is the one which I get confused when i see a natal chart for the 1st time and wonder what it all means-the lines runs across each planets connecting them.

now i have a clear picture of the Natal chart with the help of lesson 9 which give us a glance of how to understand what it means with examples with diagrams

I have a question, in the example of travolta how you find the scorpion period and what it is that?

There is a method (actually several) by Vettius Valens for predicting the concrete particular (such as a man has red hair, gets married at age 27, founds a successful business at 38, becomes widely recognized or famous at 51, etc). Valens wrote the Anthology nearly 1900 years ago in classical Greek and it has been translated by a number of scholars.

The first thing that Valens ascertains is the chart support or eminence of the native by taking the Sun's position by day or the Moon's position by night and looking at the condition of the 3 trigon lords based upon the signs they are in and whether they are in angular, succeedent or cadent houses. Valens used the whole sign house system. If these 3 planets were found to be angular and in their own domiciles, exaltations, etc then the chart was said to have great support and the planets Mars and Saturn will behave differently if they turn malefic (meaning that in a situation such as Watergate, that Nixon's aides took the blame before Nixon fell). If the planets were succeedent for the most part, then it is a middling condition and if they fell cadent and not in their own places, then life is difficult for the most part. Of course this is very general and there are ways to get a more exact idea of where the difficulties lie because we all usually have different kinds of things going on in different areas as described by the houses.

I can't go into the whole of the method of Valens here, but there is one technique that stands out above the others that is easily verifiable and would be useful even for novices known as Zodiacal Releasing (aphesis in Greek). Valens says that if the domicile lord of Spirit happens to be in the 10th sign counting from the lot of fortune, or if the 10th from fortune happens to be fortunate by having planets in their own domicile or exaltation, then when that sign has the timelordship, that is when they will become famous and what they do in that period is often what they are known for.

For example, John Travolta has the lot of fortune in Aquarius which makes Scorpio the 10th sign counting from fortune. He has the lot of spirit in Capricorn which means that Saturn is the domicile lord for spirit. Because Travolta has Saturn in Scorpio, we know before hand that when he reaches his Scorpio period that he will be famous and what he does during that time is what he is known for. Travolta is most known for his roles in Saturday Night Fever, Grease and Pulp fiction. Guess what? He was in a Scorpio period during the production and release of these three movies (first in 1977-78 and again in 1993-94).

Einstein was in a Mars Capricorn 10th period when general relativity was confirmed and he became the most famous scientist in the world. Hitler went into his 10th from fortune period and one day later the Nazi party took 108 seats in parliament.

We have been finding this to be a very reliable technique to find when career shifts occur and when one is most effective and for eminent nativities, when they become famous or when there is trouble for reputation.

Re: Methods of chart interpretation

I explained the basics here:

http://www.astrology-x-files.com/x-f...l-aphesis.html

The lengths of time are determined by the circular periods of the planets (rulers) of the signs and go in zodiacal order so if Aries is where spirit is, because Mars is ruler it gives 15 years, then Venus which is 8 years gives that to Taurus, Gemini, because of Mercury gets 20, etc...

Re: Methods of chart interpretation

Hello,

Wow some very good posts everyone!

I first studied the foundations of astrology when I was 16 years old (now 33). Throughout the years I have advanced my knowledge, especially in the areas of natal, synastry and predictive astrology. What was first a hobby then become an obsession, spending many hours doing astrological readings for people from all walks of life.

Although astrology is a fascinating subject, it can be very complex with many different rules and methods. Methods and techniques depend on ones interpretation style, and what works for them.

For those that are interested, I want to tell you my personal technique:

First of all I believe in keeping astrology simple. This means I do not consider asteroids, nodes, or things like the part of fortune.

I created a handy step-by-step guide to natal chart interpretation on my astrology blog. The guide is very detailed, and uses my own birth chart data as an example.

Basically my step-by- step guide follows these principles:

1. Create A Birth Chart

Use an online chart creation tool. Such as this one from Astro.com

2. Interpret Sun, Moon and Planet Positions

Interpret all the sun, moon and planet positions. For example, interpret Moon in sign, Moon in house, Mercury in sign, Mercury in House etc. Also interpret the ascendant.

3. Group Interpretations Under Certain Subheadings

Group your interpretations under specific headings. This will help structure your reading. A structured reading will make more sense to the reader. Such headings could be love and relationships, home life, childhood, emotions, etc.

4. Modify and Tweak the Reading so its Readable

Modify and tweak your overall astrology reading. Once you have grouped your interpretations in step 3, you will notice some contradictions in your reading, or repeat sentences. If you have two statements that contradict each other, only choose one based on the overall feel of the chart. To get an overall feel of the chart you should look for specific chart features such as stelliums, the house the sun is in, distribution of planets in the chart, etc.

5. Apply Aspect Modifications

To further improve the accuracy of your reading, you could apply aspect modifications. Aspects can help determine negative or positive characteristics of ones personality or life experiences. For example, a trine aspect to mercury could result in positive communication skills. But a square could mean the opposite.

I hope this helps. I am happy to answer any comments.

Regards,

Jamie
