Re: Meditation help

What kind of "meditation" are you doing? How many times have you meditated since stopping with music and had this happen? EVERY time??

It is not abnormal in meditation to have feelings crop up for "processing" lets say, now that they are finally given the chance.

I would not say that your meditation is ruined by that - it is part of the process. If you are unable to silently observe such for whatever reason, then perhaps abandon the meditation at that point and "work out" the feelings that have come up in some other way. Then go back to your meditation.

Re: Meditation help

I would get angry meditating sometimes too. For me it was stemming from frustration that my mind just wouldnt stop running mixed with a restless irritability. Depends on the source of your anger as to what you might do about it.

Maybe its a good thing to let some of the anger come to the surface so that you can let it go.

Try letting out your anger in some healthy way. Do something physical an hour or so before meditating.

If the music helps to calm your mind, try meditating with chants.. Or focus on what might calm you and bring you peace..

Re: Meditation help

Or make up your own calming music like an incantation to get yourself to relax. Just whatever noises. Approach it in a fun way and it might be less aggravating.

It doesnt have to be so strict. The forcing breeds the frustration. And by that i mean the way you are talking yourself through it/ your approach (not necessarily your method of meditation)

Re: Meditation help

How do you get angry from meditating? Isn't the opposite supposed to happen?

Turn the music back on.

By being mindful that
- when in this particular case the music is switched off
that one is feeling angry

nothing specific is "supposed to happen" during meditation

meditation is different for each individual

Far from being ruined
your meditation successfully brought to your conscious attention
the fact that
a great anger boils up after about five minutes without music
and so
continue to focus on the feeling of great anger
observe the feeling of great anger
without acting on it

observation
aka mindfulness
is the way to begin to experience meditation

which is beneficial
because
when one is unaware of simmering anger
that can lead to difficulties in life

however if one IS aware of boiling anger
and then
if one does not act on those feelings of anger
then no one is harmed
except possibly oneself
because feelings of anger are not good for the physical body

and so
if in this particular environment of the meditation
one is unable to detach and focus on the anger without acting on it

then
experiment with walking meditation instead
for example
walking meditation in a peaceful area where there may be trees, shrubs and flowers
may be an environment where you are more able to focus on the boiling anger
while engaging in non-violent activity

Re: Meditation help

JupiterASC is right.

Observe your anger, but don't act upon it. The more you indulge the anger, the angrier you get. Transcend above yourself and view your anger from an enlightened perspective . If you do it long enough your anger will eventually just go away..

That is the basic principle
and it seems so simple

HOWEVER
some basic commonsense structure is recommended
in order to practice the concept successfully

A Hungarian friend recommended a book by Roberto Assagioli
PSYCHOSYNTHESIS currently available on amazon in fact
however I found a summary or extract of the core principals
FREE to read at
http://www.psychosynthesispaloalto.com/pdfs/SevenConcepts1.pdf

I recommend the book
even if it is not a manual on meditation as such
- it IS interesting and inexpensive as well as a good way to begin to exercise
the principles of "Identification" and "Disidentification"
which are helpful for meditators

Re: Meditation help

Who needs books for meditation. If you have to read to meditate you're missing the whole point of meditation. Just sit down and relax. Try some chants, try turning the music back on, try frequencies instead of music, try a different room, try laying down, try sitting in a chair, try whatever...

Stare your anger in the face with the most objective view. Your anger will feel awkward and just die right off.

It might b e your 12th house Mars, trying to be heard. One of the issues with Mars in the 12th is simmering, unresolved, anger/resentment. Honor your Mars by tuning into that anger and understand what it is about. It is possible that there are valid reasons for that underlying anger/frustration. Hearing it, understanding it, can go along way towards finding an inner peace.

Anything except read a book discussing meditation

Clearly boioks are infrequently consulted by you personally
or you would have some appreciation of the value of books

however

For a person who enjoys reading books
then books are an ideal format for obtaining information and learning

The OP clearly needs written communication to help with Meditation
– hence the thread
It's not unknown that many benefit from books including books detailing various forms of meditational methodology
random posts on an amateurs online forum are no substitute for books

Re: Meditation help

Thank you for all the replies, everyone. I've been away for introspection and just a need for isolation, so forgive the late response.

The meditation I used to do was simply breathing exercises for practice in my now meditation which is Kundalini.

The anger, from what I have gathered, is due to the fact that I haven't been able to spend time in nature. Winter forces me to stay indoors and in the loud and stressful city.....well, it's stressful.

I can't like posts on mobile btw, but I like all points of view on here. Thanks again.

Hi Blaze!

Just saw this thread.

That is actually progress and it's completely normal. As negativity is leaving the system, it is normal to feel agitation, your mind will usually try to attach this agitation to something random. You may suddenly find that some things bother you for no apparent reason. This is just a phase and it will pass. Everyone has a pile of 'mind garbage' collected usually over many lifetimes. This is just 'mind garbage' being deconstructed and ejected out.

Hey Cap, thanks for the reply. The anger I spoke of has now passed and in its place a hard to shake calm washes over my spirit. I feel free for some reason haha, but that anger is simply no longer present.

But again, thank you all for the replies.

Re: Meditation help

The regular practice of meditation calms and focuses one's mind and consciousness.
It makes one more mindful
This mindful state allows one to live in a more skillful and joyful manner.
A mind and consciousness that at one time was overwhelmed by restlessness, worry, anxiety, anger
lack of direction and doubt, among other things,
can be and is transformed to one that is alive and balanced.

One of the most profound spiritual teachings on this earth
is what is known as "Right Understanding"
which is the foundation for the teachings of The Dhamma of The Buddha
and is also the first step of The Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism.
A correct comprehension of this teaching
will change one's outlook on themselves, others, their life and the world.
This change will allow them to become more at peace with themselves and others
and more appreciative of the gift of life
and the many gifts that both they and others have as human beings.

Ah, interesting that you bring up Dhamma, Mon ami....hmm. The word looks close to the word "Dharma" of which, during my reading of Mahabharata has come up several times.

For those who haven't read it - do so, it's quite the tale.

Re: Meditation help

Profound truths aside
these days
even the most practical and obvious truths
are ignored

Every day we hear people talking about the state of the economy;
not recognizing the connection between recession and greed.
Because of greed, jealousy, and pride
the economy will never become strong enough

to ensure that every person has access
to the basic necessities of life.

Our dwelling place, the Earth, becomes more and more polluted.
I have met people who condemn ancient rulers and emperors
and ancient religions as the source of all conflict.
But the secular and modern world has not done any better
if anything, it has done worse.
What jas the modern world made better?
One of the main effects of science and technology
has been to destroy the world more quickly.
Many scientists believe that all living systems
and all life-support systems on Earth are in decline.
~ Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche
