Catatonia, I understand your point fully and, of course, I understand that you've not pulled these things from a hole in the ground; I realise that other people practice Horary in this manner. All I'm saying is that just because another person says a particular way of doing things is the correct way, doesn't mean that it is the only, or even correct, way of doing things.
Of course we should use the people who've practiced Astrology before us as guides but I feel that if we cling to their ways without experiencing them and experimenting with them ourselves, we will not grow and become more accomplished astrologers. It is in the previous manner I have appraoched Horary and I have found that some of the rules set out in the past have not affected my judgements and it is in this manner I will continue to practice all forms of astrology. You, of course, feel differently and should therefore act in the way you see fit.
