Funny parody of Gordon Lightfoot song

That particular song was one of my least favorite of his offerings, so this doesn't ruin it for me. Some of his really good ones--Early Morning Rain, Approaching Lavender, Pride of Man, and, If You Could Read My Mind.

I was at one of his smaller-venue concerts, before he got really popular. Someone asked him his Sun-Sign: "What's your sign?" His answer--"Watch for Falling Rocks."

Some lampooning is more vicious than humorous. Most satire directed against Hillary is of the vicious variety, humorous only to her many haters.

Like Kathy Griffin posing with a bloody severed head of Trump or the Comedy Central writer who just said he wished the only Kennedy killed was retiring Supreme Court Judge Kennedy. Hilarious!

Griffin was fired by CNN and publicly apologized. NO ONE thought it was funny.

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
And you can spend the night beside her
And you know, that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said: "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind

Now, Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbor
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind

Leonard Cohen. A poet who could keep an entire stadium of listeners spellbound. "Only drowning men could see him" is a GREAT line. "Hallelujah" is his also.

Both Lightfoot and Cohen kept things personal, and avoided social commentary. Cohen was spiritual and metaphysical, but Lightfoot was basically a "folk-style" country singer. The apocalyptic song "Pride of Man", which was a hit for Quicksilver Messenger Service, was written by a folk-singer, and Lightfoot sang it well, although it wasn't his usual focus on personal emotional themes. The "Wreck" strayed from his usual stuff as well, but I never felt it was anything but commercial.

I had no idea you are such a connoisseur of early rock
few people have even heard of the quicksilver messenger service.

Turn around, go back down
Back the way you came
Can't you see that flash of fire
Ten times brighter then the day
And behold a mighty city
Broken in the dust again

Oh god, pride of man
Broken in the dust again

Turn around, go back down
Back the way you came
Babylon is laid to waste
Egypt's buried in her shame

Their mighty men are all beaten down
Their kings are fallin' in the ways

Oh god, pride of man
Broken in the dust again

Turn around, go back down
Back the way you came
Terror is on every sign
Though our leaders are dismayed
All those who place their faith in fire
In fire their fate shall be repaid

Oh god, pride of man
Broken in the dust again

Turn around, go back down
Back the way you came
And shout a warning to the nation
That the sword of god is raised
Get Babylon backed by its city
Rich in treasure, wide in fame

Oh god, pride of man
Broken in the dust again

Yeah!

Ahhhhhh
Ahhhhhh
Ahh ahh ahh ahh

And it shall cause your tower to fall
Make of you a pyre of flame
Oh, you who dwell on many waters
Rich in treasure, wide in fame
You bow unto your... your god of gold
Your pride of might shall be a shame
For only god can lead his people
Back unto the earth again

Oh god, pride of man
Broken in the dust again

Our holy mountain be restored
And mercy on the people
The people
Ahhhhhhh ahhhh
