Double Whammies

How many, if any, double whammies typically appear in synastry? What number would you call exceptional? Any experiences with them that stand out?

In my experience, there's no such thing as a typical number of "double whammies" in synastry because the interaction between two charts is such a complex thing and varies from couple to couple. It's generally thought that the higher the number of "double whammies" between two charts, the better the relationship is and the greater the chances that it will succeed...but this is by no means a guarantee. There have been many very good relationships which did not have many or any "double whammies" (quite possibly due to the presence of other factors such as parallels and/or a particularly strong composite) and there have been many other relationships which have fallen apart despite the presence of multiple "double whammies." Astrology is about potential, not necessarily destiny -- but what people choose to do with the cards (or rather charts) they've been dealt is in many respects up to them. There is no aspect or configuration so good that it can by itself save a relationship, and no aspect so challenging that it can by itself doom a relationship either -- this is just as true of "double whammies" as anything else.

One factor in "double whammies" which shouldn't be overlooked is how the planets involved are aspected in the natal chart. Sun conjunct Moon and Moon conjunct Sun in synastry is lovely...but what if one person has Moon square Saturn or Moon square Venus in his or her natal chart? That changes things appreciably. It also matters what planets are involved in the "double whammy" and what kind of aspects they form. If most or all the "double whammies" between two people are challenging, that's not necessarily a good thing. It's also not so good when the "double whammies" are easy in one direction and challenging in the other -- and when the direction in which they're challenging affects one or more of the malefics (Mars and Saturn, sometimes Uranus and Pluto depending on interpretation) in one person's chart far more than the other person's.

That being said, I have been in a relationship which involved multiple positive "double whammies" between very significant planets -- a mutual Moon-Uranus aspect (sextile both ways), a Venus-Venus sextile, a Mars-Mars trine, a mutual Venus-Mars aspect (sextile one way, conjunct the other), a mutual Venus-Saturn aspect (trine one way, sextile the other), and a mutual Venus-Uranus aspect (sextile both ways), We also had a mutual Sun-Saturn aspect (trine one way, square the other), a Moon-Moon square, and a Moon-Saturn aspect (trine one way, square the other). It was one of the longest relationships I've had to date (possibly because of the Saturn aspect) and the sexual chemistry between us was very strong. Unfortunately, it was not enough to keep us together.
