In my 38 year life (I was born Feb 15, 1980), Mars' closest approaches to earth happened in Oct-Nov 1988 (in the signs Pisces/Aries), Aug-Sep 2003 - a 50,000 year record closest point to earth (in the signs Pisces/ Aries) and Jun-Jul 2018 (in the signs Aquarius/Pisces), and similarly every 2.2 years: Nov-Dec 1990 (rx or retrograde Taurus), Jan 1993 (Cancer), Feb 1995 (rx Leo), Mar 1997 (Leo/rx Virgo), Apr 1999 (scorpio), Jun 2001 (Sagittarius), Aug 2003, Oct 2005 (Aries/ Taurus), Nov-Dec 2007 (Cancer - went to rx Gemini in Jan 1, 2008), Dec 2009-Jan 2010 (Leo), Mar 2012 (Virgo), Apr 2014 (Libra) and May 2016 (Sagittarius/ rx Scorpio). The next time Mars is closest to earth is July 2020 and even closer than usual on May 2033. And earlier before 1988: Dec 1986 (Pisces), Jan 1985 (pisces), Feb-Mar 1983 (Aries), and Apr-May 1981 (Aries/Taurus-conjunct sun).

When Mars is in the sign Pisces, it heightens the global risk of war, esp on Aug 2003 ... which was 4 mos. after the US armed forces invaded Iraq, replaced the Saddam Hussein regime and they occupied the country until their mission was complete in Jan 2011. Mars is in a certain sign on average every 687-700 days (almost 2 years, or 1.9 years). Dates when Mars entered this sign of Pisces: Feb 1981, Jan 1983, Dec 1984, Nov 1986, May 1988, Oct 1988 (retrograde), Apr 1990, Mar 1992, May 1994, Feb 1996, Jan 1998, Jan (esp. 1-3), 2000, Dec 2001, Jun 2003, Apr 30-May 2005, Apr 2007, Mar 2009, Feb 2011, Feb 2013, Jan 2015, Dec 2016 and next month on Nov 2018, as well later on May 2020 (next decade).
