The word “Alcohol”
comes from the Arabic “al-kuhl”
which means
“BODY EATING SPIRIT”
It's actually from a Semitic word relating to the refinement of antimony
into a powder, used for eye shadow. The restrictions against drinking alcohol
in the Arabic regions resulted in a metaphorical use of the word
regarding the effect of imbibing alcohol as "shading" one's vision
and clouding the mind.
