Transits to Midpoints

Hi, I'm interested to hear about peoples experiences of transits to midpoints. Specifically the Sun/Moon midpoint, but any midpoints at all would be interesting to hear about.
Do you find the transit has to be a conjunction/opposition, or do you find that squares and trines work too? Do you use the Sun/Moon midpoint in predictive work for clients, or do you ignore it? If you do use it, how do you interpret a transit to it?

Hello Astropsychologist.

Midpoints represent points of balance/synthesis between two planets or personal points (eg. Asc/MC) in a chart, but at the same moment they also have an entity/dynamic of their own. The Asc/MC, for example, is not only the point of balance between the projection of the self and the public image; it is also the point of awareness of the identity: the point where you realise how your projection of the self shapes your public image, and how your public image is determined by the way you project yourself.

In theory, all midpoints in a chart – not only the So/Mo – are triggered by transits, progressions, eclipses. Midpoints having a focal point and midpoints without a focal point are nonetheless triggered by all the above.

When studying a chart, I note down at least: the So/Mo, the Asc/MC, the closest midpoint picture, any midpoints having Aries Point at their focal. Also, I check if there is any particularly harsh Midpoint Picture in the Natal Chart, because when it will be triggered the results could be massive. Transits, progressions, eclipses serve as triggers; just the hard aspects though: conjunctions, oppositions, squares. Also, the Solar Return angles conjuncting a midpoint can trigger it and play out.

If you are interested into a midpoints study, I would recommend Midpoints. Identify and Integrate Midpoints into Horoscope Synthesis, by Don McBroom and The Combination of Stellar Influences, by Reinhold Ebertin. Their interpretations are not always on the same wavelength, but I like to look at them in a complementary way.

Thank you for your response Vinyasa!
I find midpoints very interesting, but apart from the Sun/Moon midpoint I tend to ignore them when doing charts for other people. I'm trying to watch my own midpoints to see what occurs and how sensitive they are etc. I felt the effect on Pluto opposite the Sun/Moon midpoint very intensely, however I currently have Uranus square it and don't feel it at all! So am hesitant to include any transiting aspects apart from the conjunction and opposition.
I must remember to watch out for other midpoints in my chart to see for myself how they play out.

Yes, I believe Pl=So/Mo you cannot miss ;)

Ebertin writes about Ur=So/Mo 'urge for freedom, urge for acting independently, lack of adaptability, inner rebellion; sudden events in friendship, marriage, parental home, shared upsets, sudden conflicts, separation of partners'. McBroom gives some interesting tables for planets either as midpoints keywords or as focal point keywords: I do not believe they are exhaustive, however they are useful when learning to identify and synthesise midpoints. So in the case of Uranus as the focal point he writes 'individualistic expression or innovation'.

When you read a midpoint picture, the equality symbol [=] represents all (and only) hard aspects: the complete midpoint theory is based on hard aspects.

I have my chart ruler Uranus conj Sun/moon midpoint and mercury conj Asc/MC midpoint. These two are the most important as far as midpoints go. They can be very sensitive points, espec to progressions, transits and solar arcs. To watch/research how these points play out make a note of the degree for example my sun/moon = 3' 05" taururs, but any at that degree in 'fixed' will be considered same as conj, square or opposition. Same with Asc/MC being 'outlet or exit points' for planets energies. So although I have mercury retrograde natally, having this conj Asc/MC I've always known that communications, written, verbal, relating, analysing are important to me but in practical way (taurus merc)

The orb has to be very tight 1’ or max 1’30” to be effective though

I recommend you employ Cardinal,Fixed and Mutable Sorts, when evaluating transits to midpoints.
I suggest the book,'Working with Astrology'by Michael Harding and Charles Harvey.(Arkana 1990).

I'm having Neptune conjunct my sun and moon midpoint now. It's hard to say exactly whats going on, beeing in the middle of it. But right now I've lost one of the most important things that I felt "held my life together", and I have to figure out a totally new way to get by. It's times of change, that's for sure... And I feel frightened, lost and dessilusioned....

Thank you for your replies and the links.
Yeah it's a toughie, never sure whether or not to address them in a consultation with someone. I definitely would talk about a transiting conjunction/opposition to a midpoint, but the jury's still out on whether or not I would mention it if it was a square...I haven't felt the squares myself, but will continue to watch in case Uranus decides to make its square to my sun/moon midpoint at 0 cancer felt some time soon!
