Ayn Rand’s personal life
was consistent with her philosophy of not giving a sh** about anybody but herself
Rand was an ardent two-pack-a-day smoker
and when questioned about the dangers of smoking
she loved to light up with a defiant flourish
and then scold her young questioners
on the “unscientific and irrational nature of the statistical evidence.”

After an x-ray showed Ayn Rand had lung cancer
Rand quit smoking and had surgery for her cancer.

Collective members
explained to her that
many people still smoked
because they respected her
and her assessment of the evidence
;
and that since she no longer smoked
she ought to tell them.

They told her that she needn’t mention her lung cancer
that she could simply say she had reconsidered the evidence.
Rand refused to tell them
she had reconsidered the evidence

Couple things...

The fact that she still received care despite how selfish she is just shows how flawed collectivism is. If you're going to help selfish people who don't give back then you're clearly doomed.

She payed taxes. So I don't understand why she couldn't be able to accept medical help???

And so what she has a couple bad qualities. No one is perfect. Jesus. Stop hating on my hero.

If the A.M.A. and the anti-smoking fanatics would put as much effort into demonizing hydrocarbon emissions as they do demonizing smoking, the incidence of so-called "smoking-related diseases" would plummet. But it's so much easier and more sanctimoniously satisfying to pick on people who enjoy tobacco products and nicotine vaping.

A century ago, tobacco and marijuana were both "good" to many people.
Progressives thought Marijuana made people lazy or immoral.
Marijuana became illegal sometime in the 1920s or 30s.
50 years ago, marijuana EVIL, tobacco-cool, healthy, sophisicated.
Conservatives associated Marijuana with minorities and hippies at the time.
However, scientists discovered cigarette smoking is really bad for you.
Today, Tobacco is toxic, BAN IT, marijuana got a bad wrap, LEGALIZE IT.
Oddly enough, recent scientific studies find marijuana's medical properties.
And a growing belief marijuana is safer than alcohol and other illegal drugs.

IMO, I won't try either tobacco or marijuana, I don't want negative health or side effects from smoking both of them. People do have the right of personal choice with cigarettes and now in 9 ? states+District of Columbia with pot or weed. I'm not sure marijuana will be legalized nationwide by US congress due to the federal government's ongoing conservative/progressive war on drugs.
