Natural Ruler Mutual House Reception

I have Venus in the 5th and the Sun in the 7th house so they naturally rule each other's houses. I am not completely sure how to interpret this. Venus is stronger in the 5th, and the Sun tends to give itself away in the 7th, and as we know the Sun likes to shine in it's own right and not look to others before it will express itself.

I was reading about this in Rulers of the horoscope. I will quote from the book, so it explains it better then maybe someone can help me interpret my placement.

This determination is rather simple to make. All one does is examine the position of the planets in the natal horoscope and see where the corresponding natural rulers of the horoscope are posited. Let us say that Mars, regardless of sign, is in the 5th house of a particular horoscope. What planet are we searching for now? The Sun, because it is the natural ruler of the 5th. If the Sun was in the 1st house (naturally ruled by Mars), then the natural house rulers would be in mutual reception. Likewise the same situation would occur if Venus were in the 12th house and Neptune in the 7th; Jupiter in the 10th and Saturn in the 9th; Mercury in the 8th house and Pluto in either the 3rd or the 6th, and so on. Remember we are always looking for the hidden links in a chart that unite circumstances either harmoniously or inharmoniously in order to determine the priority of planetary or house influence.

In the case of the natural ruler mutual house reception, the Astrologer has to be very clear about the function of the planets and their "comfort" zones in terms of the houses. In the four examples used above, we can note:

Mars in the 5th and the Sun in the 1st: This is a strong and often positive contact, as these two planets are very compatible in each other's natural sphere of influence. The Sun like to shine brightly in the 1st, the closer to the actual Ascendant the better. Mars is happy to have fun and frolic in the 5th house of amusements, romance and children.

Venus in the 12th and Neptune in the 7th: Although this is an artistic, compassionate, and relatively "pleasant" interconnection, some difficulties may occur if the individual does not know the difference between personal and transpersonal relationships. This often results in confusion relating to emotional boundaries and degrees of intimacy. This placement can also indicate a person who is likely to work with people who are in social distress. This combination is frequently found in the charts of "spiritual seekers" because Neptune and Venus in these positions contribute with the "need to merge" in an ideal fashion that may be difficult to achieve in relationships on earth.

Jupiter in the 10th and Saturn in the 9th: Success in life can be attained when there is a firm basis in the philosophy or spiritual belief system that underscores one's sense of social morality. If personal ambitions override honesty and responsibility, then positive achievements will not easily be forthcoming.

Mercury in the 8th and Pluto in either the 3rd or 6th: These positions yield a probing mind-one that is usually intensely curious and sometimes quite suspicious. Life is often geared towards ferreting out secret or obscure information (3rd house Pluto) or toward uncovering techniques and methodologies aiding one's ability to improve the workplace (6th house Pluto).

Shining Ray, this is a good topic to think about. Indeed, in your example, Venus in 5, Sun in 7, the two planets are in their mutual houses which can be seen as positive. The Sun likes to shine but who says that it cannot shine in the 7th? It is an angular house and by definition a strong placement. I dont think you should really try to give the mutual houses reception too much emphasis. After all, if Mars is in 5 but in let's say, Libra, and the Sun in 1 and in Gemini, then their mutual houses would be OK, but their sign positions not all too good. So indeed, you have to look at the "priority of planetary or house influence" to determine the effect. I usually look at the planet as the vehicle with a certain energy, sign it is in will then determine how this planet has to behave and often a planet does not like the sign it is in because it cannot do what it wants and it gets frustrated. The house it is in is then the life compartment (finances, children, career, health etc.) where this energy then will be used, good or not so good. I think that the reception of houses can only be solely beneficial if also the signs the planets are in, are compatible to their energy.

Hi Starlink,

Sorry I am late getting back to this topic, it is something I am still thinking about to see how much of an influence or theme is does have on a chart. I think it has some significance because my chart weighs heavily towards relationships and sacrifices. I still can't work out what it means, maybe it just means a lot of my self expression comes through relationships. I agree the Sun can shine in the 7th, but because I have SN in the 7th as well I can be dependent on relationships and other people. and be over compromising at times. My North Node being in the 1st house is developing the self which is an important lesson for me.

Here's one of my favorite North Node in the 1st house readings it kind of reminds me where my path in life needs to head. (I am obsessed by the nodes aren't I, every other thread I go on about them :D .) Only people who have North Node in Aries or in the 1st house will probably read this.:D

May I ask two questions please -

Could someone recommend a book for Mutual Reception and also suggest a meaning for me - Jupiter in Virgo in seventh house and Mercury in Saggitarius in 10th.

I'm a novice so would appreciate some help, thank you.

Sorry Shiny, I also am late in answering. have been away for a while.
About this Sun in 7, yes, you could see it that way you describe. You could only feel happy and express yourself if you are with a partner or in love (Venus in 5). It depends of course a lot on the aspects these planets make with other planets. By themselves, this mutual placement could mean that "love should ideally result in a relationship" or that you see relationships as the only way to be able to really be yourself or find yourself (expression).
Should the Sun in 7 be squared by Neptune, then you get extra information on how this Sun is doing that. It deceives itself when it comes to partners or it lets itself being deceived, or it over idealizes relationships, sees everything through rosy glasses. And how is Venus aspected?(you are talking about relationships and sacrifices! That is NEPTUNE, not this mutual placement doing that for you.) You cannot just look at the mutual placement thing. Always look at the energies these planets give out when connected with other planets. Maybe this makes it a bit clearer for you?

Starbright, just like I said to Shining Ray, you cannot just say: "what does this mean" without looking at everything else and aspects with those planets in particular. Jupiter in Virgo in 7 can mean that you are very good at helping others, especially the public in general, and Mercury in Sag. in 10, that you would like to express these qualities in your career (for instance). I see some sort of service to others (Virgo) in connection with your career (10th) and maybe to do with religion or nature or something medical (Jupiter).

Hi. I had a question. You see, I had my Mercury in the 8th and my Pluto in the 3rd, just as it says in the book. However I was wondering what it'd be like to have this placement-I heard somewhere that it's like having the planet in its own sign but anyways, I wanted to know what a combination of Mercury in the 8th and Pluto in the 3rd'd be like since I can only see here about the 3rd house Pluto and the 6th :( Please let me know where you found the book as well since I have thinking about the same thing. Hope to hear from you real soon.

Actually, Venus is in its own House in the 5th and the Sun is in the Moon's House in the 7th. Mutual reception is also a form of essential dignity, so it doesn't apply to accidental dignity such as a planet being in its own House. Sorry if any of that was confusing.
