Positive Surprises from Learning Hellenistic Astrology

  • The power that lies in simplicity and systematization
  • The gain of greater technical distinctions
  • that allow one to see a person’s concrete life circumstances
  • in different areas
  • more clearly
  • Greater capability of prediction
  • which among other things
  • can put the relationships between personal effort
  • and luck
  • into greater perspective
  • Some techniques working so well
  • it prompts the need to reevaluate philosophical issues
  • about how astrology and the universe work
  • The possibility of learning Hellenistic astrology
  • but still integrating previous astrological learning and tools

I would add to this list, the value of historical understanding.

Much of Hellenistic astrology is with us today, regardless of the form one practices; such as the 4 Aristotelian elements, the critical importance of the birth moment, codification of the signs and houses.

Just yesterday I read a post on another forum by someone who didn't get Capricorn as a feminine sign, and doubted that this was correct. Well, fair enough; but this is a tradition going back over 2000 years. So that's where we look for the explanation.

It totally wasn’t an accident that Hellenistic is so consistent internally.
Obviously created(perfected?) by very wise and learned men.

In ancient astrology the method
for determining the ruler of the chart was much more complex.

There are references to the MASTER OF THE NATIVITY in many
surviving astrological texts from Hellenistic astrology tradition,
but not many surviving discussions about how to calculate it.

The approach in this lecture is derived from chapter 30
of Porphyry's Introduction to the Tetrabiblos
which is itself derived from
a lost work of definitions by Antiochus of Athens.

How to calculate the predominator (epikratētōr)
the master of the nativity (oikodespotēs geneseōs)
the co-master or joint master of the nativity (sunoikodespotēs)
and the lord of the nativity (kurios).

Caring for Our Language
by Charlie Obert, October 2020.

....importance of language awareness in the world today.

It is a vitally important topic
we need to study it to stay sane
we need it to practice astrology effectively
– and, we need it to protect our political freedom
our ability to choose our own speech and thought
rather than have it chosen for us.

looking specifically at language and astrology
the importance of recovering traditional astrology language.
how our use of language shapes how we do astrology
Benefic and Malefic
....a comment I saw in an astrology discussion group on Facebook.
Is benefic and malefic still the thing anymore?...”

I assume this comment came from a relative novice.
This statement assumes that the study of astrology is trendy
and that it changes with fads
you only study whatever happens to be IN this week
Being a serious long-time student of traditional astrology
I find that to be a mind-boggling concept.

Benefic and Malefic - Misconceptions

some question as follows:

“....Is benefic and malefic still the thing anymore?....”

Presumably a relative novice asking
and
their statement assumes
that the study of astrology is trendy
and changes with fads
inference is to only study whatever happens to be IN this week.
any long-term student of traditional astrology
would find that a mind-boggling concept.

because

The concepts of benefic and malefic
are central parts of the structure of traditional astrology.
Dismissing them as “....not the thing anymore...” implies
that one may ignore whatever parts of the tradition
don’t happen to be in favor at the moment.

That is a great loss of meaning.
It is vital to understand the full depth of meaning
of the terms BENEFIC and MALEFIC.
