Mayan Astrology

Mayan astrology is a variation of Mesoamerican astrology, one of the most forward-thinking kinds of astrology of its time. The Mayan Calendar, or Tzolk'in, is comprised of 20 Day Signs and 13 Galactic Numbers, making a 260-day calendar "year".

I am reading about Mayan History. It is quite interesting. The book is called "The Civilization of the Maya" by Guy Annequin published in 1978.

It starts with Christopher Columbus arriving in 1492, arriving in probable San Salvador and Haiti. Then it discusses how he and his brother sold between them in Seville and Cadiz 809 captives into slavery.

In 1506 the year of Columbus death, de Solis and Pinzon set foot in Mexico, the Yucatan. They were not yet aware of the Maya. First Hernan Cortes started the pillaging of the Aztec Empire starting in 1519.

Although Cordoba did have a run in with them in 1517, he did not know that they were Maya. He was looking for slaves, and a storm drove them inland, where they came upon a group of indigenous people who asked that they come to dinner so to speak. They were different than the people they were used to seeing, as they wore clothing that covered them adequately rather than the half naked coastal people's the were used to seeing. They deemed them to be more civilized, because of this. They accepted the invitation and of course took along their muskets. Part way to the village, they were attacked and lives were lost and people as well, as they were taken by the Maya to be expended in their ritualistic sacrifices.

That is all for tonight.....food for thought......Opal

If this is in the wrong spot, my apologies. It is not about astrology yet, it will get there. If it should be elsewhere let me know.

Thanks Jupiter Asc.

To both Greybeard and Jupasc

I like the build up, to the astrology. The history, is a part of it. When I get to the parts with astrology, I will return. To me they are together

"Its bloody cannibalistic ways were coming to an end...."

Nearly all primitive humans were cannibals. Yes, Europeans too. Cannibals are not racist. The Aztec also ate their sacrifices.

On further reading, it is a history book. It contains very little astrological information. Other than to say the obvious that they had an advanced system, that was destroyed in a book burning mission. I am actually quite disappointed with the book. With the title, I guess I erred, I presumed it was about the Maya civilization. In truth it is more about how the Spanish and other old world countries "civilized the culture" of the Mayans.

My apologies, I should have read further first.

I just googled Mayan Astrology books. There is some. I am curious as to where their information comes from, if like the history book says, the data was burned quite completely.

Although, I have a hard time believing that one crusade of book burning could entirely destroy all literature on their astrology.

If and when I get a book on Mayan Astrology, I will return......

There were many books in existence in the 16th century
at the time of the Spanish conquest of Yucatán
most were destroyed by the Catholic priests.
Many in Yucatán were ordered destroyed by Bishop Diego de Landa in July 1562.

Today, only three or four Maya codices remain.

Three of them are named for the European cities where they are kept
Dresden, Paris, and Madrid.
The authenticity of a fourth book called the Grolier Codex
now in Mexico City, is still disputed.

AND SO
SOME NAVIGATION TIPS
keep in mind that
because ours is an astrological learning forum
where members practice astrological skills free
no one is paid
therefore
responses to threads
are often from members who are beginners like yourself
with little or no experience
keen to learn by practice
members are encouraged to discuss interpreting their own charts to learn by practice
we also have members with many years of astrological study completed
members have day jobs
and those of our members who are professionals
do not provide a complete professional reading for free

all are welcome - whether a TRADITIONAL astrologer or a MODERNIST astrologer
and
our forum hosts BOTH perspectives ON SEPARATE BOARDS

i.e.
our MODERN BOARD completely excludes traditional astrological comment
and
our TRADITIONAL BOARD completely excludes Modernist astrological comment

i.e.
We have a modernist board AS WELL AS a traditional board
and then
the rest of our forum is composed of GENERAL ASTROLOGY THREADS

i.e.
whether a member is using Vedic astrology
Chinese astrology, Western Sidereal Astrology, Modernist Astrology Traditional Astrology
ALL perspectives are welcomed on our General Astrology board threads
and any member
may comment on our GENERAL ASTROLOGY BOARD using ANY astrological methodology

our HELP WITH FORUMS AND SUGGESTIONS board is at

to be clear then

our TRADITIONAL ASTROLOGY ONLY board
is at
http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum...splay.php?f=92

For discussions on Traditional Astrology only.
Note: Typically, traditional astrology is defined as using techniques developed prior to 1700
by astrologers from the Hellenistic, Persian, Hebrew, and Renaissance eras.
Specifically it relies on Ptolemaic aspects sextile, trine, square, opposition and conjunction
and excludes modern planets Neptune, Uranus and Pluto
non-Ptolemaic aspects, as well as any asteroids.
The focus is less on what would be considered modern psychological chart interpretation
and more on prediction.
Members who wish to explore a combination of traditional and modern ideas
should feel free to start a new thread in an appropriate forum for further discussion.

our MODERNIST ASTROLOGY ONLY board
is at https://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=95
For discussions on Modern Astrology only.
Note: Typically, modern astrology is defined
as using techniques developed around the late 1800s by Theosophists.
Specifically it relies on psychological, evolutionary, karmic,
and non-western interpretation approaches
and includes Neptune, Uranus and Pluto
and non-Ptolemaic aspects.
The focus is more on psychological chart interpretation
instead of prediction.
