PHI in astrology

Hi

You know about PHI, the golden ratio, the golden mean, the golden number, a special proportion believed by antics and moderns alike to represent a divine proportion, harbinger of harmony. It is found proeminent in algebra, geometry, anthropometry, many exact and occult sciences, Giza pyramids proportions and so on.

PHI = (sqrt(5) + 1) / 2 = 1,6180339887

In astrology I think it relates to Venus influence, since (astronomically) Venus' revolution period is in golden proportion with Earth's and (astrologically) Venus describes during her movement around the zodiac a pentagram, geometrical shape which embeds PHI, the golden ratio.

What about applying it further in astrology:

360 degrees * PHI = 222 deg 29 min 32 sec = 12 Sco 30
Sabian Symbol: AN INVENTOR PERFORMS A LABORATORY EXPERIMENT
I don't know of anything in particular related to this degree.

30 deg * PHI = 18 deg 32 min 28 sec

There are some special meanings of the 18+ degrees (=19th degree of the each sign). They are listed below, together with the corresponding sabian symbols.
Please help me fill in the blanks by suggesting astrological events that took place at the 18+ of any sign.

Hi Radu

Although I cannot say what meaning this degree has in the various signs, i can tell you that I have my natal Sun at 18° Sagittarius, and my Moon at 18° Capricorn. I can confirm that I have a strong dislike of people who litter (like the pelicans I am too disturbed by garbage), and that I was responsible from a young age for my younger siblings, so the picture of a 5 year old with a bag of shopping fits somewhat.

I have read (I think in one of Noel Tyl's books), that 18° mutable signs is one of the "Astrologers degrees".

The golden mean: I must say that I am happiest, when things are in complete balance and harmony. Imbalance disturbs me greatly!

Thanks Beth for the link: the images show that a pentagon's side and diagonal are in golden ratio. In astrology, these relate to the aspects of quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic aspects).


Could the quintile and biquintile be actual a kind of PHI aspect, a manifestation of the golden ratio? I start to believe so.

Moses Siregar III says about quintiles:

Very interesting.

There is a dutch website,called Uranische vijfster nieuwsbrieven(Uranian fivestar newsletters)of a man who is really investigating all aspects of mathimatical,quantumfysics subjects,especially the relation of the pentagram,the golden ratio(A:B=B: (A+B)or 1:2=2(1+2) and the Fibonaccinumbers,the outcome of the Golden Ratio
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89 etc.The further you go into the series and dividing them with one another,the closer you get to the number phi!And these things are all related to the precession!

This man is an enormous thinker and scientist,who tries to minor the gap between science and esotery and astrology.Unfortunately,this website is only in Dutch,but with quotes of people in English and referations to links on the web.

He also sees the number 9 as an important number in relation with this,and in some newsletters there are very interesting drawings of things related to the golden ratio,like fethers of the peacock and a certain flower laid on eachother,something of Dozci who says:"This is not magic : it is the mana of sharing, which is the very nature of nature". Änd he said :"Irrational numbers are not unreasonble; they are only beyond reason, in the sense that they are beyond the grasp of whole numbers. They are infinite and intangible. In patterns of organic growth the irrational phi ration of the golden section reveals that there is indeed and infinite and intangible side to our world ".. And there is also the Golden Ratio in DNA and in buildings like Stonehenge,the Parthenon and the Notre Dame.Well,there are numerous examples.I will send an e-mail to this man,to see if it is possible if the newsletters can be translated into English.

So Radu,I think quintile and bi-quintile are related to phi,but how to apply it to certain degrees,I don't know.What also is interesting I think,is that the pentagram shows up in (almost)the same signs,that has to say something also.And,esoterical,the pentagram is the sign of the complete(holistic)human.

Yes, this site rocks! well done.

On this page an artist implanted 20 steel pillars on various points around the Earth's circumference at golden ratio distances from the previous one.
This could be done using any number of "pillars" and placing them on the zodiac wheel for instance.
Since 7 is the number closest to the golden ratio from 12 (interesting 7 traditional planets, 12 zodiacal signs) we might look for the exact positions in the zodiac of those markpoints.
After some calculations, it gives: 7Ari56, 12Ari50, 20Ari47, 03Tau37, 24Tau24, 28Gem01 and 22Leo25.
Interestingly, the transiting Sun is currently at 27Gem45, very close to the 6th markpoint of the 7th fold phi zodiac division.

This page (http://goldennumber.net/solarsys.htm) is also very interesting as it presents that certain planets of our solar system seem to exhibit a relationship to phi.

I'm very interested in more finding phi harmonies in astrology and other fields of life, which will help
For instance, the two words of the name of this very site, Astrology Weekly are in a proportion close to phi: 9 and 6 letters, 42 and 27 as numerological values.

For instance, it seems that everything that has a given lenght allows the calculation of the phi point (which splits its lenght in two parts in phi proportion to each other).
Take Moon's cycle for instance or Solar Return cycle or any planetary cycle.
Add 222 deg. 30 min to your natal Sun's position and there you are - on the moment the transiting Sun crosses that exact point, there must be some PHI phenomenon going on in your life. It might also represent a very harmonious moment, when one might perform a specific action thar requires lots of harmony.

There is even a constellation in the sky named O-Phi-u-chus (see here) which by some is considered as the 13th zodiacal sign. The main stars in Ophiuchus are listed here, together with their tropical zodiac positions. But when translated to the Sidereal Zodiac positions, these stars spread on an area that encompasses the phi degree (222=12 Scorpio).

Just random thoughts.

I like this idea.Easy to use in practice for faster(Moon) and slower(Sun)cycles.I will experiment with this to see if on the particular day something interesting will happen!And interesting if a transiting planet is on this particular point.

I have been thinking of a strange recurrent idea involving PHI and the gradual phasing between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs: do you suppose any interesting data would result from multiplying this ratio with the difference (in degrees) between any particular planet in the sidereal and tropical zodiacs? Would this produce a more harmonized natal chart?

For example, these are the degree measurements of my natal planets according to the default Western geocentric (tropical) settings of Astrodienst for my birth time of 6 AM:

Sun: 15 Aries 35'42" = 15 degrees 35'42"
Moon: 5 Aries 9'58" = 5 degrees 9'58"
Mercury: 16 Aries 30'28" = 16 degrees 30'28"
Venus: 15 Aries 42'26" = 15 degrees 42'26"

According to Radu, PHI = (sqrt(5) + 1) / 2 = 1.6180339887. My calculator rounds this to 1.618033989, so this is the number I am going to use.

Moon: 335 degrees x 1.618033989 = 542.0413862 degrees
Mercury: 335 degrees x 1.618033989 = 542.0413862 degrees
Venus: 336 degrees x 1.618033989 = 543.6594202 degrees
Mars: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
Jupiter: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
Saturn: 24 degrees x 1.618033989 = 38.83281573 degrees
Uranus: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
Neptune: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
Pluto: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
True Node: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
Chiron: 24 degrees x 1.618033989 = 38.83281573 degrees

Ascendant: 25 degrees x 1.618033989 = 40.45084972 degrees
