Geshe Ngawang Phende will speak on "The Antidote to Self-cherishing".

A self-cherishing or selfish attitude is extremely harmful
to both ourselves and also those around us

When we have this attitude, we become very narrow-minded
and easily come under the influence of other negative emotions
such as anger, jealousy, desire and so forth.
This causes our minds to become disturbed
and also causes us to act in ways that disturb the minds of others.
In this class, we will look at how to deal with this mind
and reduce it through relying on suitable antidotes.

"....Foolish, selfish people are always thinking of themselves

and the result is always negative.

Wise persons think of others, helping them as much as they can,

and the result is happiness....!!! "

The reason you are wandering in samsara
~ Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
https://justdharma.com/s/l98yo

Even when you find yourself in the best of situations
you never feel it is enough.
You always want more.
You give little thought to others wishes and desires
and only want favorable circumstances for yourself.
If you do the slightest favor for someone
you feel you have done something quite extraordinary.
That you are so preoccupied with your own happiness and welfare
and neglect the welfare and happiness of others
is the reason you are wandering in samsara

The Thirty-seven Verses on the Practice of a Bodhisattva"

“Throughout my reign I will never rule you as a King.
I will protect you as a parent, care for you as a brother
and serve you as a son. I shall give you everything
and keep nothing; I shall live such a life as a good human being
that you may find it worthy to serve as an example for your children;
I have no personal goals other than to fulfill your hopes and aspirations.
I shall always serve you, day and night, in the spirit of kindness, justice and equality”

I think it's pretty self-explanatory what self-absorbed is, and
it's pointless being semantical about it, because the definition of it is implied to be negative.

Create your own word to explain what you mean.
Loving oneself is not the same as self-absorbed.
Self-absorbed just means someone who thinks too much about their own needs
that they don't even have the time to care about anyone else
(it also implies lack
because
if you're focusing on your own needs too much, it means
you perpetually feel you don't have enough of something).

Self-love means that you have tended to your needs to the point of abundance where you feel you can share this love with others.
Exactly

If you're overly concerned with yourself
including your own feelings and thoughts
you're self-absorbed
Self-absorbed people don't think much about how others are feeling

Your own interests
and your own life will be balanced
only when
they include both the well-being of yourself and others.
Any wholesome undertaking
necessarily includes a desire to benefit others.
If an undertaking is egocentric and full of self-cherishing,
then
that balance will be extremely difficult to find and maintain:smile:

Just look within to the virtuous thoughts you have had
and you will always find a reason to love yourself.
Take joy in your sincere intentions.
Everything starts with an intention.
If you have been able to have beautiful aspirations
these aspirations will always be part of you, a beautiful part.

keep in mind that
There are two CLASSES the RICH and the POOR

the RICH gain/maintain WEALTH using distractions e.g. RACISM

The RICH create distraction issues to keep themselves RICH
and maintain their wealth
the main distraction issue is RACISM
RACISM keeps the POOR of many nations busy fighting each other
while the RICH get RICHER

The RICH successfully use their WEALTH to incite
the POOR of every nation
towards continully arguing and fighting
while using their wealth to control poverty-stricken majority

Fact is
there ARE black AS WELL AS white wealthy people
There is a black wealthy elite AS WELL AS a white wealthy elite
that's obvious

The wealthiest control the poorest

TWO WORLDS WEALTHIEST BILLIONAIRES ARE

BILL GATES
- English/German/Irish/Scots ancestry

and
JEFF BEZOS
- Bezos was abandoned by his Scandinavian father
- the Bezos surname is that of Jeff Bezos STEP-FATHER a Mexican

'Debt bondage' is increasing - many are forced to borrow
“....Slavery isn't always in the obvious form
where one person owns another person
traditionally called 'chattel slavery'.
Bonded labour/debt bondage amounts to slavery
– that's when a person's work is security for debt
- the person has not been sold
BUT they are on 'a long lease' they cannot end
– unable to leave their 'employer' because of low wages,
deductions for food/lodging/high interest rates.
physical 'chains' and 'whips' associated with past slavery continue
in various forms all over the world in the 21st Century
e.g.
as in

(a) physical violence experienced by those in abusive relationships sometimes work-related
who although not 'physically chained'
nevertheless feel too intimated to walk away from their 'keeper'

(b) non-physical bondage which uses the 'chains' and 'whips' of threats

and intimidation

e.g.
fear of the consequences of having no money
- i.e.
homelessness, social exclusion
– keeping billions in bondage on a work-related treadmill of drudgery.

Obviously there ARE those who find their work

and/or daily activities that they perform in return for money
rewarding not just for the money

but there is a vast majority
who have to accept work and/or daily activities they dislike
in return for money
- even though many have diplomas/degrees
and qualifications of varying kinds
but are unable to find the work they would love to do
and so their work is in fact a form of abhorrent bondage
chronic disease, drug addiction and educational bondage

are forms of slavery

Quote:
To me, it can mean persons in bondage: legal, financial, marital,
fettered by chronic disease, debts, etc;
also "wage slaves" locked into jobs they dislike but from which then cannot free themselves;
to me it can also mean bondage to habits/compulsions/obsessions, from which it is not easy to free oneself
.

Quote:
I think the vast majority of us are slaves.

There are no physical constraits like chains and whips
but there are social and govermental constraints.
We spend around 70% of our lifes in education and work
so we can earn money to keep ourselves alive.
We have no other choice, we cannot say no.
We also have to pay for our own safety.
We all have to conform to social convensions
so we aren't shunned by others.
I'm grateful in a way that I live in a western country though
what an oxymoron.
