Grand trines

I have an Earth & Water Grand trine and I was wondering what the debilitated and dominant planets that make up the trines might mean overall?

My Earth trine is made up of 2/3 debilitated planets (Jupiter in 3rd house Virgo & Moon on the cusp of the 7th house Capricorn) while my Water trine has no debilitated planets and actually has one dominant planet (Pluto in 5th Scorpio).

there's a useful FREE online resource on PLANETS
for example SUN
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/sun.html

SIGNS
for example ARIES
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/aries.html
VIRGO
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/virgo.html
CAPRICORN

HOUSES
for example 1st House
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/temples/h1.html

then using that information

keep in mind that:

A PLANET acts.

A HOUSE shows the area of life in which the planet acts

as well as
how strongly the planet can act

houses-labeled.gif

and

A SIGN shows the quality of the planet's expression.

so

working with that idea
one can build on it

by

- selecting a natal planet
Locating which house the natal planet is in
Assessing how comfortable the natal planet is in that natal sign
Checking what the planet rules in the natal chart

keeping in mind that
An understanding of planetary dignity and debility
is useful for assessing how comfortable a planet is in a particular sign

You have an earth grand trine, but not a water grand trine. You need actual planets for true aspect patterns. However, you can get a temporary water trine by transit, when a third planet hits your AC.

Grand trines symbolize an easy energy between the involved planets. Sometimes it is almost too easy, because with your stability-loving Taurus sun trine Jupiter, life is going to go reasonably well for you, even if you don't get off the couch. This might mean you don't exert yourself to improve your circumstances, even though you would benefit from change.

Modern astrologers wouldn't worry too much about debility. We feel that planets work differently, not necessarily worse, in their signs of detriment and fall. In traditional astrology, it means that a debilitated planet just can't express itself very well. Fuss-budget Virgo might seem at odds with Jupiterian faith and optimism. The luminary symbolizing a loving mother, emotions, and feelings may be restrained with cold, dry Saturn-ruled Capricorn.

Not so. An angle can be part of a grand trine, or other complex aspect, as long as the rest of it consists of planets.

Completely agreed. Also, whether something's "debilitated" and to what degree might be balanced out by strengthening factors. In your case, the moon is in detriment by sign, but the moon is always one of the strongest parts of the chart no matter what sign it's in, and it rules your ascendant, which makes it even stronger.

Thank you! I do also think the Ascendant can be part of a trine since it's an important point in the chart, arguably more important than a planet.

Obviously there is some disagreement, but I'm going by the 3-planet definition of grand trine in James R. Lewis, The Astrology Book: The Encyclopedia of Heavenly Influences, p. 281; Fred Gettings, The Arkana Dictionary of Astrology, p. 220; and Bil Tierney, Dynamics of Aspect Analysis, p. 66.

See also Nicholas Campion's article on aspects and aspect patterns at http://www.skyscript.co.uk/aspects2.html

and the definition from Nicholas DeVore, Encyclopedia of Astrology, at: http://www.astrologyweekly.com/dictionary/grand-trine.php

and this one at Oxford Dictionaries: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/grand-trine

On a more personal note, I think it's best to be more concise when looking for aspect patterns, rather than more inclusive. Because once we allow angles (sensitive points, asteroids, what-have-you, in aspect patterns) we start losing the main message of the horoscope. Which in this case is that the water trines are important enough as individual trines. We don't discount trines to the ascendant by any means, we just don't consider these to form a grand trine, which has a more specific meaning.
