Exalted/Detriment Retrograde Star

Hello, I've been wondering how retrograde planets are affected when posited in an exalted/detriment sign.

For example, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer.. would retrograde Ju in Cancer lose the exaltation?

I've read many different theories on how retrograde effects are 'twisted' or 'warped', still unsure if its a good or bad thing.

In my (rather unorthodox) understanding, the rx status of the planet has a significant effect; in the example given, Jupiter rx influences would only be somewhat modified by the planet being in its exaltation sign; however, if Jupiter rx would have been in its Fall sign, its likely that the rx influences would have been amplified; to my understanding, dignity improves the constructive expression of a planet, and if the planet is rx then the dignity modifies those toward an almost neutral condition; a planet in debility tends to bring out the disruptive influences of the debilitated planet, so if it is also rx this would tend to amplify those influences (many will disagree with this outlook, but I follow it in my delineations and it seems to be accurate-for me at least-pretty much of the time)

Dr. Farr, what would be your intake of a Saturn Rx in the 4th House Aquarius on a natal chart? Since Saturn is naturally a malefic, is its energy amplified in its own sign and on an angular house or no?

Pluto retrograde in scorpio above

Jupiter Retrograde
* has doubts about what they deserve and so ...
* finds it easy to settle for crumbs
* feels superior in some way inside
* abundance is felt on the inside
* looks inside for answers to religious questions

Saturn Retrograde
* feels inside that they're never good enough
* indulgent outward behavior may mask inner feelings of inadequacy
* hides fears

To me Saturn Rx (which I also have) suggests a missing parent, or male archetypal influences absent or simply ineffectual from early childhood.

We need to remember planets are modified by signs, where they express are houses and how they express are *aspects*
So how is this saturn rx aspected? can you post the chart?

Well I don't know about being unorthodox or orthodox, but this system is right and I work on it too.

Great insight astrologer50, and that Saturn retrograde thing does affect me that way. I do have a tendancy to hide my fears and try t olook my best, because I don't really feel good enough or doubt my authority in certain places.
And spot on on a missing father, he was never really in my life, and since; had left when I was young. Haven't seen him in yearssssssss.......

dr farr, I for one agree. This seems accurate. Obviously I would have liked to have been given a stronger, better placed jupiter. It's weak, retrograde, out of sect, in cadent 3rd house. I'm not sure if you can count out of sect trip-ruler to give dignity? if not than it is peregine. Aspects - trine mars in 7th and opp to sun (w/mutual reception - maybe helps a little not too sure since sun is in 10th house).
I guess disruptive influences might be described as a bit selfish, impatient, disorganized, impractical and self satisfying - "all amplified" - and than there is the unrealistic optimism. I also can relate to the characteristics listed by astrologer50 -The "on the inside" part sounds familiar.

I'm thinking there must be times when the natal condition of jupiter would be mitigated? I'm assuming so, since I know I have had successful good periods in my life when I have not had to settle for the crumbs! - just not as of late.

Yes, I do believe that there are periods of time when the foundational basic influences of the natal planets are modified; furthermore, I do believe that we can actually change those basic influences through knowledge and Will and the application of spiritual/alchemical methods.

@ dr. farr

in this nocturnal chart, is jupiter in a very malefic state? retrograde, opposed by two malefics (saturn in dignity)..

In my opinion, somewhat so: posited in a (whole sign) cadent house, out of sect, retrograde; some help by being in mutual reception with the Moon; some help by being in a bright degree of Cancer; but over-all I think we have a mostly debilitated Jupiter here, favoring the expression of Jupiter's disruptive or "negative" influences, over its positive/constructive effects.
However, Jupiter is in longitudinal conjunction with Alhena, a star of Venus and Jupiter quality; this will significantly help the positive/constructive Jupiter effects, so in a complete analysis including the fixed stars Jupiter is not as bad off as a more superficial look would indicate...
