It is totally possible. You can read this book about brain's cognitive functions on aidmypath. It's quite useful to understand why we dream and how to analyze dream.

It's not unusual.
In many cultures dream life was/is very important to the health and well being of the community.
The Senoi (somewhere in Southeast Asia) had a very strong dream aspect to their life. They would gather every morning and share and interpret the dreams. Shared dreams made the vision stronger and therefore more heeded.
If you do some research you will find lots of information.
