Bunheads

The 14th five-pointed star is comprised of the following Sabian Symbols (wording as given by Jones, 1953):

Aries 14: A serpent coiling near a man and a woman.
Scorpio 20: A woman drawing two dark curtains aside.
Gemini 26: Winter frost in the woods
Aquarius 2: An unexpected thunderstorm
Virgo 8: First dancing instruction.

The comedy-drama TV series Bunheads, which premiered in 2012 contained appears to have been inspired by this combination of symbols--most obviously Scorpio 20 and Virgo 8:




As is often the case, the symbols work into the story literally and figuratively. Virgo 8 (First dancing instruction) obviously takes the form here of first experiences as a dance instructor. Scorpio 20 shows up in a few ways, most notably in the opening minutes when the protagonist fails to get a promised audition for the hit musical Chicago and it become clear to her that that the "curtain" has or is soon coming down on her career. We even see her standing in her modest apartment on the outskirts of LV, in front of open blinds, and looking out into the dark of the night.

The 11th five-pointed star is comprised of the following Sabian Symbols (original wording as given by Jones, 1953):

Aries 11 The president of the country

Here's Wikipedia's plot summary:

"A married couple, the Maynards, suffer after the death of their baby daughter from SIDS. The husband, Jack (Chris O’Dowd), is in a residential mental hospital while his wife Lilly (Melissa McCarthy) remains at home, dealing with her own feelings alone.

Lilly is trying to hold it together for Jack's return from the facility. Employed at a grocery store, she works to maintain her family's property. As if Lilly's troubles weren't bad enough, a starling whose nest is in a tree in her backyard begins to harass and attack her and she becomes obsessed with stopping it. She's also driving two hours every week to see Jack, wondering if he really wants to come home, and what life would be like if he did.

Prioritizing Jack's grief without managing her own, a counselor at Jack's hospital suggests Lilly see someone for her own mental health before he returns home. This leads her to the office of Larry Fine (Kevin Kline), a quirky psychiatrist-turned-veterinarian. They form a unique and unlikely bond as they help each other acknowledge and confront their problems. He helps her with the starling whilst embedding ways to help her grief into the conversations. Lilly starts to become attached to the bird and when she accidentally hits it with a stone and nearly kills it she turns to Larry to help her revive the bird.

When the bird recovers, Lilly lets it go. She and the bird start to tolerate each other instead of abusing one another.

Jack returns home and they reconcile and work on their relationship, facing the world together. The film ends with them gardening watched by the starling that is still spending time in their garden."

Here's my take.

The main symbol, or key stone symbol, if there is one, might be Gemini 23: Three fledglings in a nest high in a tree. You'll actually see them at the 1:57 mark in the trailer. Actually two fledgling birds (belonging to the starling) and one "fledgling" child (the one that the protagonists lost).

Virgo 5 (a Man dreaming of fairies) is Jack, Lilly's husband, who spends much of the time in the film in a mental hospital. He doesn't exactly "dream of fairies" but fairies are magical creatures and he does engage in a kind of "magical thinking."

Finally, Scorpio 17 (a woman the father of her own child) is another candidate for the keystone symbol. The way it works in the film is obvious: Jack is unable to cope and Lilly has to keep home and hearth together in his absence, plus process her own grief. There's a line in the trailer where she says to Jack, around the 1:34 minute mark in the trailer, "I carried her for 9 months. So why are you here (now)?"

The BritBox series entitled "Traces" (2019) "...focuses on three female forensic professionals, Emma Hedges, Sarah Gordon and Kathy Torrance, working together at the fictitious Scottish Institute of Forensic Science and Anatomy (SIFA) in Dundee, Scotland, as they uncover the truth of a murder case and bring a killer to justice."

In the first episode, "Emma, Kathy and Sarah... try to unearth the truth about an unsolved murder that's very close to home. A fatal fire in a nightclub proves an ill omen for Emma’s return to Dundee. Her mother’s unsolved murder comes into sharp focus, forcing Emma to turn to her new boss, Sarah, for support."

The 30th five-pointed star of Sabian Symbols is comprised of these five:

Sagittarius 6 A game of cricket
Cancer 12 A Chinese woman nursing a baby with a message
Aquarius 18 A man unmasked
Virgo 24 Mary and her white lamb
Aries 30 A duck pond and its brood

This story did something interesting. The first we see of Sarah Gordon, a professor at SIFA, it's about the forensics and chemistry of fires. And understanding the causes and the people behind the nightclub fire drives the action of the entire first season. As it turns out, the man indirectly responsible for the fire is the same man responsible for the murder of Emma's mother. And yet, fire's not there in the symbols. Something rather clever was done here that I've seen more than a few times. it's one degree away. Aquarius 19 is "a forest fire quenched." Also notable is that opposing Aquarius 18 ( a man unmasked) is the Leo 18: a professor of chemistry.

With that in mind, consider the following:

Symbols Aries 30 (a duck pond and its brood), Virgo 24 (Mary and her white lamb), and Cancer 12 (A chinese woman nursing a baby with a message) are all about women/mothers and their young or young children. In addition, the three protagonists are all women, all forensic scientists. Note the forensic descends from the same etymological root as "forest."

Aquarius 19 gives us the "fire"

Aquarius 18 (a man unmasked) is the murdered of the mother figure and the story reaches its climax with his "unmasking" and subsequent trial.

Cancer 6 (a game of cricket): there is no explicit mention of the game of cricket or any particular match or team. There is, however, much in the story about slang terms for cricket, mostly those of sexual nature that i won't discuss here.

The 61st five-pointed star is comprised of the following Sabian symbols

Gemini 1 A glass-bottomed boat in still water
Capricorn 7 A veiled prophet of power
Leo 13 An old sea captain rocking
Pisces 19 A master instructing his pupil
Libra 25 Information in the symbol of an autumn leaf

Careful consideration of these reveals that the first Star Wards movie was built on the 2nd and 4th of the set. Subsequent films continued to elaborate on them. Consistent with PI 19 (A master instructing his pupil) we had, of course, the Jedi Masters--Obi Wan Kenobe and Yoda. The pupil was Luke Skywalker.



As for Capricorn 7 (A veiled prophet of power), it was Darth Vader who embodied this symbol.

The 62nd five pointed star is based on the following five Sabian Symbols:

Libra 26 An eagle and a large white dove turning into the other
Gemini 2 Santa Claus filling stockings furtively
Capricorn 8 Birds in the house singing happily
Leo 14 The human soul awaiting opportunity for expression
Pisces 20 A table set for an evening meal


Hollywood never tires of making movies about Santa Claus. Among them, one that made extraordinarily good use of the above symbols was the 1994 blockbuster, The Santa Clause starring Tim Allen. If you're good at interpreting these symbols, all you need do is read the plot summary below to see how they all factor in. Really quite amazing, actually.

"Successful toy salesman Scott Calvin prepares to spend Christmas Eve with his son Charlie. Scott wants Charlie to maintain his belief in Santa Claus, despite not believing himself. Scott's ex-wife, Laura, and her psychiatrist husband Dr. Neil Miller, both stopped believing in Santa at a young age and feel that Charlie needs to do so as well (after an older kid made Charlie upset by saying Santa isn't real).

On Christmas Eve, Scott burns the turkey so he and Charlie go to Denny's for dinner. That night, they are awakened by a noise on the roof. Scott startles a man standing on the roof, who slips and falls to the ground. The dead man's body vanishes, leaving behind a red suit and business card that states: "If something should happen to me, put on my suit. The reindeer will know what to do." Scott dons the suit and spends the rest of the night delivering gifts before the reindeer take them to the North Pole. Bernard the head elf explains that, by putting on the suit, Scott is subject to a legal technicality known as "The Santa Clause", and has accepted all of Santa's duties and responsibilities. Bernard gives Scott eleven months to get his affairs in order before reporting back to the North Pole on Thanksgiving. Confused and overwhelmed, Scott changes into the pajamas provided to him and falls asleep.

Awakening in his own bed, Scott thinks it was all a dream until he realizes he is wearing the pajamas. When Charlie proudly tells his class that Scott is Santa, Laura, Neil, and the principal ask Scott to tell Charlie that it was a dream but Scott instead asks him to keep it to themselves. Over the course of the year Scott acquires a liking for milk and cookies (and other desserts) and gains a lot of weight, along with a thick beard despite attempts to shave it, and his hair whitens and is unaffected by dyeing. After Laura and Neil witness children wanting to sit on Scott's lap at Charlie's soccer game they assume Scott is deliberately misleading Charlie and decide to have a judge suspend Scott's visitation rights which devastates him. At Thanksgiving, Scott goes to Laura and Neil's house to say goodbye to Charlie but Neil won't let him anywhere near Charlie. When Neil insists that Scott is not Santa, Charlie shows Scott a magical snow globe that Bernard had given him, finally convincing Scott that he really is Santa. When Laura and Neil allow Scott a minute to talk to Charlie alone, Bernard appears and transports him and Charlie to the North Pole. Thinking Scott has kidnapped Charlie, Laura and Neil call the police.

On Christmas Eve, Scott sets out to deliver the gifts with Charlie in tow. Upon arriving at Laura and Neil's home, Scott is arrested. The elves send a team to break him out of jail. Scott convinces Laura and Neil that he is Santa, and asks Charlie to spend Christmas with them as they are his family too. Bernard appears and tells Charlie that any time he shakes his snow globe his father will appear. An entire genre of films has been motivated by this set of symbols--most of a religious variety. Foremost among them is, of course, The Ten Commandments, which implied in Pisces 22. It was, after all, Moses who brought down the 10 Commandments during his time leading his followers from Egypt to the Holy Land. That said, films about other saints, holy men, and prophets also fit well here.

The 49th five-pointed star is comprised of these Sabian Symbols:

Leo 1 A case of apoplexy
Pisces 7 A cross lying on rocks
Libra 13 Children blowing soap bubbles
Taurus 19 A newly formed continent
Sagittarius 25 A chubby boy on a hobbyhorse


Even before I tell you you the movie, you should be able to see the themes. One is KIDS or kids at heart. And they're playing, doing kid-stuff. You've to Libra 13 (CHILDREN blowing soap bubbles) and Sagittarius 25 (A chubby BOY on a hobby horse). There's apoplexy (Leo 1) which is an extreme state of frustration or anger, a strong emotional response, a tantrum. And what's the cause? Perhaps a severe test or trial, persecution or a persecution complex--why am I being picked on?-- or if really extreme, crucifixion (Pisces 7: a cross lying on rocks). Another possibility is being thrust into a new environment where the kid has to grow up, where his mettle is tested, where he's taken out of his comfort zone and put in a new world (Taurus 19, A newly formed continent).

The 1994 film Tommy Boy starring Chris Farley embodied this star quite nicely. In short, the film "tells the story of a socially and emotionally immature man (Farley) who learns lessons about friendship and self-worth, following the sudden death of his industrialist father."




And here's you shot from the film where Leo 1 (A case of apoplexy) is evidenced. Leo = Fire sign. Tommy is apoplectic ( Extremely angry; furious) and starts a fire on the desk.

The 26th five-pointed star is following Sabian Symbols

Aries 26 A man possessed of more gifts than he can hold
Sagittarius 2 The ocean covered with whitecaps
Cancer 8 Rabbits dressed in clothes and on parade
Aquarius 14 A train entering a tunnel
Virgo 20 An automobile caravan

Two very similar movies in the 1990's were made almost back to back in the mid-1990's drew inspiration from this star.
They were the Australian " The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" (1994) and the American "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything." (1995).

Each film feature three drag queens and/or transgender males who go on cross-country road trips.

To Wong Foo: "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a 1995 American road comedy film ... starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo as three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip.
Its title refers to an iconic autographed photo of Julie Newmar that they carry with them on their journey." ...
Plot: After tying for the win in New York City's "Drag Queen of the Year" contest, Noxeema Jackson and Vida Boheme win a trip to Hollywood to take part in the even bigger "Miss Drag Queen of America Pageant". Before they depart, Vida persuades Noxeema to take along the inexperienced "drag princess" Chi-Chi Rodriguez as their protégé (they initially refer to him simply as a "boy in a dress" rather than as a full-fledged drag queen). To do this, they cash in their plane tickets to a friend, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt (Robin Williams in a cameo role), and use the money to buy a yellow convertible 1967 Cadillac DeVille.
They set off for Los Angeles in it, carrying with them an iconic autographed photo of Julie Newmar..."

Priscilla Queen of the Desert: "Australian road comedy film... The plot follows two drag queens played by Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce and a transgender woman, played by Terence Stamp, as they journey across the Australian Outback from Sydney to Alice Springs in a tour bus that they have named "Priscilla", along the way encountering various groups and individuals.
The film's title references the slang term "queen" for a drag queen or female impersonator. ... Anthony "Tick" Belrose (Hugo Weaving), using the drag pseudonym of Mitzi Del Bra, is a Sydney-based drag queen who accepts an offer to perform his drag act at Lasseters Hotel Casino Resort managed by his estranged wife Marion in Alice Springs, a remote town in central Australia. After persuading his friends and fellow performers, Bernadette Bassenger (Terence Stamp), a recently bereaved transgender woman, and Adam Whitely (Guy Pearce), a flamboyant and obnoxious younger drag queen who goes under the drag name Felicia Jollygoodfellow, to join him, the three set out for a four-week run at
the casino in a large tour bus, which Adam christens "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".

The 22nd five pointed star is comprised of the following Sabian Symbols:

Virgo 16 An orangutan
Aries 22 The gate to the garden of desire
Scorpio 28 The king of the fairies approaching his domain
Cancer 4 A cat arguing with a mouse
Aquarius 10 A popularity that proves ephemeral

The 2008 Academy Award nominated film, The Wrestler, drew inspiration from this set of symbols.

Here's a synopsis of the story: The protagonist is "an aging professional wrestler who, despite his failing health and waning fame, continues to wrestle in an attempt to cling to the success of his 1980s heyday. Virgo 16: The literal translation of the Malay "orangutan" is “wild man" a very apt description of the professional wrestler protagonist, in particular. Just look at him!

Aquarius 10 (A popularity that proves ephemeral): per the above synopsis-- "waning fame", "cling to the success of his 1980's heydays" when he was a king of the ring, adored by legions of fans (Scorpio 28, a King of the fairies approaching his domain).

The symbol Aries 22 (the gate to the garden of desire) finds its place in the protagonist's relationship with the aging stripper while Cancer 4 (a cat arguing with a mouse) is found in the protagonist's attempt to rehabilitate his relations with his daughter.

Finally, it is very interesting that the "Rocky" franchise is based on the adjacent star, the 21st one which includes Aries 21 (a pugilist/boxer entering the ring).

The fifth five-pointed star is comprised of these following Sabian Symbols:

Scorpio 11 A drowning man rescued
Gemini 17 The head of health dissolved into the head of mentality
Capricorn 23 Two awards for bravery in combat
Leo 29 A mermaid
Aries 5 A triangle with wings

The 1980's Tom Cruise box office smash, Top Gun, draws inspiration from this star.



Aries 5 (A triangle with wings) is, of course the F-14 Tomcat fighter jets that the protagonist "Maverick" and the other Naval Aviators pilot.



Capricorn 23 (Two awards for bravery in combat) is fairly obvious. It's a movie about Navy fighter pilots during the end of the Cold War. Of course there are numerous combats sequences (dog fights) with Russian MiGs. Though no literal awards are pinned on chests, there is acknowledgement.

Leo 29 (a Mermaid) comes in a few ways. There is the very lovely, female (maid) flight instructor, who becomes romantically involved with Maverick. The setting for the flight school is the Naval Air Station Miramar. The word in Spanish for "sea" is Mar. The French word for sea is mer. Mira = to view, to see; Mar = sea. "Miramar" in Spanish means sea-view. So literally See the Sea.

Gemini 17 (The head of health dissolves into the head of mentality) is seen in Maverick's story arc from "Maverick", then brash and impulsive and cocky young fighter pilot growing into--by the end of the film--a thinking man, a mature, battle-tested, and instructor at Miramar, a man who overcame his inner demons and outer opponents who can now teach the next generation of "Mavericks."

Scorpio 11 (A drowning man rescued) is a key sequence in the film and a kay part of Maverick's developmental arc and overcoming his fears and self-doubt. Here's how Wikipedia describes it: "During the graduation party, Viper and Jester call in the newly graduated aviators with the orders to deploy. Iceman, Hollywood, and Maverick are ordered to immediately return to the Enterprise to deal with a "crisis situation", providing air support for the rescue of the SS Layton, a disabled ship that has drifted into hostile waters."

The husband role of fecundator of nature here takes on a collective social significance. We are at the stage where a powerful realization of the very purpose of the cycle of existence faces the chaotic remains of a dis-structured past. The character of the leader is always delineated by the need, subconscious though it may be, of the unformed agglomeration of entities he is called upon by destiny to lead. In time the leader will be worshiped as the 'divine Father' of the society he structured.
At this third stage of the thirty-third sequence we see a new type of characterization of the many-faceted polarization of positive and negative. We have now reached a square (go-degree angle) to the beginning of the cyclic process. This is a moment of crisis, a sharp turning point. In the zodiacal cycle, at the summer solstice the northward motion of the sun (in 'decimation') stops; the sun rises and sets as far north of exact east and west as it can during the year-cycle. Its motion is now reversed. Slowly the sunset points move southward on the western horizon, and the length of the day decreases. In the lunation cycle (from New Moon to New Moon) this is the First Quarter phase. On the 'ship' which symbolizes the ego-consciousness floating, as it were, on the sea of the vast Unconscious, the individualized will makes a basic decision. The dominant Yang force allows the Yin force to begin its six-month long rise to power. The 'collective' will gradually overcomes the 'individual', and at the end the state will overpower the person. Now, however, the individual person enjoys his most glorious
hour; he exults in his ability to make a 'free decision'- i.e. to act as an individual who selects his life goal and his allegiance.
This is the first stage in the nineteenth five-fold series of degree symbols. In a decisive act heavy with consequences, the symbolic college youth might realize that he should bring to an end his quest for the ideal companion and enter into matrimony. He assents to the possibility of progeny, of home responsibility. His consciousness accepts a process of fundamental REORIENTATION, implying the stabilization of his energies.


ARIES 19°: THE 'MAGIC CARPET' OF ORIENTAL IMAGERY.
KEYNOTE: The use of creative imagination.
A way of life refusing a hectic involvement in social competition and waste-producing overproduction allows for the development of unattached and transcendent understanding. The static floor (carpet) on which man's feet (symbols of understanding) rest can become transformed into the means for great flights of imagination and super-physical perception. The period of rest from outwardly directed activity bound to collective normality presents the creative mind with the possibility of surveying in dreams the totality of the present-day social situation, thus 'to see whole'.
The fourth stage of the fourth five-fold sequence of symbols invokes the possibility of developing a new technique of perception, A STRIFE-TRANSCENDING AND UNATTACHED OUTLOOK UPON EVERYDAY REALITY.


AQUARIUS 7°: A CHILD IS SEEN BEING BORN OUT OF AN EGG.
KEYNOTE: The emergence of new mutations according to the great rhythms of the cosmos.
The ancient symbolism of the Cosmic Egg (Hiranyagharba in Sanskrit) out of which a new universe is born can be interpreted at several levels. Here we see the appearance of a new type of human being who is not born from 'Ancestors' and who therefore is free from the inertia of mankind's past. He is a new product of evolution, a mutant. He constitutes a fresh projection of the creative Spirit that emanates from the cosmic or planetary Whole, and not from any local culture and racial tradition.
This second stage symbol is in contrast with the preceding one. It can be said to announce the EMERGENCE OF GLOBAL MAN for the New Age. The power of the whole is focused within him in perfect freedom from ancient standards of value based on local conditions.

SCORPIO 25°: AN X-RAY PHOTOGRAPH.
KEYNOTE: The capacity to acquire a knowledge of the structural factors in all existence.
The true philosopher is able to grasp and significantly evaluate what underlies all manifestations of life. His mind's eye penetrates through the superficialities of existence and perceives the framework that gives an at least relatively permanent 'form' to all organized systems. Thus if the structure is weak, deformed by persistent strain, or unbalanced, the basic causes of outer disturbances and dis-ease can be discovered.
This symbol concludes the forty-seventh five-fold sequence. It gives an added dimension to the preceding four. For instance, it provides the conscience of the individual who refuses to obey his society with a depth-understanding of what is wrong in the situation he faces. Beyond the powerful feeling quality of 'peak experiences', the mind can understand the great Principles of which they were the manifestations. This is STRUCTURAL KNOWLEDGE in contrast to existential knowledge."

I'm not going to touch that one.
We have among our membership a woman whom is the re-incarnation of Mary Magdalene but I'm not at liberty to give up her identity.

My own "Star" based on my M.C. is the one Dane used for an example in the chapter of his book titled, "The Cross and the Star"...as my M.C. [and Po Fortune] is in the 25th of Leo. The 25th of Leo also happens t be the Hermetic Lot of Eros derived from the natal chart I contend is that of Yeshu'a of Nazareth. The Sabian Symbolism found for ones' "Lot of Eros" is representative of those one seeks as their companions on their spiritual path, their posse. The 7th of Leo is my S. Node, the United States N. Node and the aforementioned reincarnation of Mary Magdalene's M.C. and the location of Black Moon Lilith on her natal chart.

The "communion" to which Rudhyar refers is echoed in Gemini 20 (a cafeteria) where in the film, so much of the communication occurs at meals, over dinner and lunch and coffee.

The "biological attunement" is evident too in that it's a father and his children that are having trouble communicating. They have for years but only he is just discovering it.

Specifically, as I've shown in a few dozen examples here, many popular stories and films are based on two or three degree symbols on the same five pointed star. Sometimes you'll even find 4 or all 5 worked in. Still, usually one or two are most prominent. Now depending on the kind of story you want to tell, aspects to those main 1-2 symbols come into play, as follows.

If telling a comedy, musical (but not rock-opera), something upbeat, family-friendly, and/or intended for children, or other light-hearted fare like comic operas, then you'll want to aspect those symbols with elements taken from symbols are trine to the 1-2 main symbols.

I'm not concerned with "make believe", but thanks all the same, I'll keep these suggestions in my files... the Star is the life destiny when it is lived according to Gods' plan. That which points upward, centered on the M.C. of the natal chart, is a life dedicated to the ONE ABOVE, the downward pointing star is a life lived in pursuit of self desire in the material world.
Phoenix Venus made me aware that one should be aware of both Stars and that life can be lived fully when incorporating them both. Hence r.e. the number 55 being the occult and esoteric number fro the Gnostic Christians for Mariam, the Mother that gave virgin birth.
