Sexual Nature

Hi,

I was just thinking about the planets in the chart which indicate the sexual nature, and also aspects etc.

I did a good search and found nothing on this in the natal section, most delved into 'which gender are you attracted to' etc. This at least at the start was just a mini-question, but there's no one in chat so...

When I say nature, I mean it in the very same way that Venus is described for love. Does anyone look at the 8th house? I don't see how the 8th comes into it. I remember some discussion in the past indicating that the 5th is the 'rightful' home and that makes more sense to me in the context of recreation. That said, I'm confounded, I don't see much of my sexual nature in my 5th sign, dispositor or planets therin. I do however see my Mars speaking clearly on the matter, and to a lesser degree, Venus, Moon and Sun. Why not fifth?

How about everyone else? What are the guidelines for looking on this matter? I believe in many countries in the world, one partner choosing not to have sex with the other is grounds for divorce. I don't think we pay enough attention to this, mostly Venus steals the show.

Re: Sexual Nature

Venus, Moon and Mars largely "take the cake" relative to sexual matters, with Neptune as well (when we have more unusual types of sex involved) One of the best books on this matter-although quite dated in retrospect (from today's point of view)-still is Vivian Robson"s "The Astrology of Sex"; also Charles Carter has several very insightful entries connected with this subject in his great book "Encyclopedia of Psychological Astrology"...both books are easily available (Amazon; astroamerica.com) and will repay study regarding this subject...

Re: Sexual Nature

Hi byjove. I think that there are quite a few parts of the natal chart that relate in some way to sexual expression.

The Moon is very important because it symbolises the urge for relatedness and intimacy, both physical and emotional.

Venus symbolises the seeking of pleasure and self-worth - both of which can be enhanced greatly by the right kind of sexual relationship (or further diminished by the wrong kind of relationship if we are wounded in Venus' realm).

I think both of Venus' natural houses are linked to sex. Dane Rudhyar described the 2nd as procreative sex, and the 8th as sex as a kind of interpersonal glue that binds us on a more emotional level (and draws forth deeper emotions) than the more detached 7th house relating can do).

Pluto is associated with sex, I think, as natural ruler of the 8th.

Mars must also be associated with sex as it is the testosterone planet and the planet of desire.

I don't see the 5th house as particularly sexual, because it symbolises experiences of manifesting one's essential nature and purpose, rather than fusing with another being or satisfying physical or feeling-based needs. But I think that during the honeymoon period of a relationship, 5th house energies could be very pervasive and perhaps influence sexual expression.

I haven't tended to think of Neptunian energy as very sexual, because it seeks an experience beyond the physical body and individual satisfaction.

But if Neptune or the 5th house were strongly connected in the chart with the sexual energies I suggested above, then I would expect the Neptunian urge for transcendant perfection, and the 5th house need to feel special and unique, to figure in the sexual expression of the native.

Re: Sexual Nature

I think the 5th can lend creativity to sexual expression possibly? Of course that's depending on the planets posited here, their aspects, house ruler etc.

Re: Sexual Nature

I'm giving the classical astrologers' take on this question.

Venus and Jupiter are the lesser and greater benefics. They both create benefit, Venus through pleasure and Jupiter through increase. Venus rules not only love, but beauty, marriage and sexual pleasure. She will show that which you desire and that which attracts you. You should look to the sexual nature primarily through her.

That being said, all planets have houses in which they are "joyful". The joy of Venus is the 5th house, the house of pleasure and amusements. In horary it is often used to represent romances, but it also represents games, amusements, entertainments and sensual delights. All of these things are also under the domain of Venus. Remember, Venus's domain is the bedroom. Mars' domain is the battlefield.

The 8th house is the house of death, other people's money, inheritances and the management of estates, and in my opinion should not be used for the sexual nature.

As far as the Moon is concerned, she, along with Venus, are called "appetitive" and represents our appetite and the thing we reach for in response to stimulus. Aspects of the Moon with Venus can make a person sexually inclined, as the Moon primarily responds in a Venusian manner. Of course, if Saturn is involved in the aspect he can put a damper on sexual responses.

I respectfully disagree with Mars being connected with desire. Venus represents desire and Mars representing our actions, or how we actually do the things we do, actually goes for the thing Venus desires. That being said, he is important for the "execution" of our sexual desires. If he is in Venusian signs (Taurus, Libra) with Venus in Martial signs (Aries, Scorpio...yes, Scorpio!), you can bet the person will have strong sexual nature, and may have problems keeping it in their pants.

In looking at many charts, I have also found that a profusion of water signs makes the person highly sexual. Remember that Pisces is the exaltation of Venus, and Scorpio rules the sexual organs. Generally, if the Moon is in a water sign and in trine to another planet, especially benefics Venus or Jupiter in water signs, the nature is generally highly sexual.

So
1. Check out Venus's position and aspects. Make sure she's not in Virgo which is her fall.
2. The fifth house and it's lord. Pleasure comes in all forms, so if Saturn is there or rules it, it could mean that they get pleasure out of work, isolation or ponderous activity.
3. Check the Moon, is she in a water sign? Contacting Venus? Contacting Venus or Jupiter in Water signs? In her exaltation of Taurus, which will make the native highly tactile and often sensual depending on the Moon's aspects.
4. Mars executes that which Venus desires. How he operates will show you the native's approach to sex and how active he is about getting it.

Hope this helps.

I am in agreement with this concept although I also consider Venus to be about our values, ideals and expectations in life. This is why we are so often attracted to the wrong person in life, or have unrealistic expectations of the partner, especially if Venus is afflicted. Through Venus we often tend to idealize what our perfect partner should be like, and then are disappointed when they are not what they seemed. The Moon describes our basic emotional needs which we then seek to have fulfilled through relationships with others; Mars is the motivator of going after what we think we want.In my work I rely on this formula in revealing one's individual 'relationship chemistry'. Problems arise when the energies of these planets are elementally imbalanced and the challenge then becomes one of finding a point of re-stabilization and harmony within. If our emotional needs are not being met we are apt to blame the other person rather than focusing on ways to meet our own needs. Our expectations may be over-idealized requiring the individuals themselves to become more realistic and honest with themselves. Afflictions to Mars can contribute to sexual aggression or sexual frustration.
I do consider sex to be primarily linked to the 8th house, because of it's rulership by Scorpio; Pluto is the higher harmonic of Mars and the 8th house has traditionally been associated with life [birth] and death [ resurrections] situations, whereas the 5th is more about the creative aspect of 'setting the stage for romance' so as to recreate life through children. Obviously many individuals are only concerned with sex purely for the sake of sex, which is more directly associated with the sex drive of Mars, and are not so keen on forming committed relationships which is more connected with the energy of Venus . As 'the Stones' suggested: 'you can't always get what you need, but if you try sometimes you just might get what you need'. Sometimes what we think we want are not the things that we need.

Re: Sexual Nature

Well hi again,

very interesting responses...

some are different and some have common elements. Right, so I can add the Moon to my knowledge here, I didn't associate the Moon with this at all...wow...this is exactly why I ask - to learn more! I have to say though, and perhaps this is a mistake on Modern astrology, but rarely if ever have I read the Moon connected with sex in explanations. I have with it's aspects with Venus.

I'm surprised to see differences on Mars and the 8th house. Though, to be fair, with either the modern or traditional indications above I can see a lot in my own chart.

There were many things I could quote above, but I can't multi-quote for the life of me despite joining threads on the matter lol.

"Mars executes Venus's desire" - paraphrasing above ^^.
Hmm, now there's an interesting perspective! Can anyone expand on this? I'm intrigued...like Mars goes through Venus, as a gateway to sex? Hmm how interesting!

Shall we take a few random positions and figure out a person? I'll check the state of the sky now and add...Moon in Cancer, Venus in Capricorn, Mars in Virgo...

So Venus in Capricorn, the 'ambitious' love, where the Saturnian influence on Venus often means the native takes love quite seriously, sometimes like a business deal, and for many natives that there needs to be 'a gain' e.g. a trade of status, wealth or something. Natives at least put 'business before pleasure' in the love life, and frequently takes a secondary role to other things in life e.g. career. Sexual appetite? (poking in the dark now, given new learning above) perhaps not so strong, Venus does fine in earth but not so freely in ambitious Capricorn, and that sign is cold and calculating, I don't expect the appetite to be strong, but since it's earth I'd say sensual and 'durable'.

Mars in Virgo, the native is exacting and particular in (I'm splintered between modern and traditional interpretation now, which...) in modern perspective, terms of time, location, other variable factors (is this done? Where's this? That's more important) and the Martian influence in earth adds more 'durability' (I mean length of TIME). The Virgo influence prefers clean, safe and quiet, and these are likely prerequisites for the individual. Also, sex is likely to be ranked in terms of importance at that time and not as a matter of raw lust or spontaneity.

Any inadequecy in the brief, modern interpretations in terms of sexual nature shows just how much I need to pick up and learn here, so correct away!

Moon in Cancer - sex? Emotional needs dictate sexual occurrence, happiness in the self, comfort and security with the other etc.?

p.s. Kimbermoon, I think you're a wise kitty cat!!

Re: Sexual Nature

[QUOTE=byjove;341581]Well hi again,

very interesting responses...

RE: Moon in Cancer...my take on this:

The Cancer moon [inner needs] is concerned with emotional security...thus while it can be highly sentimental, nurturing and caring, it can also be negatively expressed as being overly dependent or demanding...the tendency to cling to relationships in a desperate attempt to have the personal needs met. While it may not relate directly to sexuality, it is still a big part of the 'relational chemistry' showing the needs we have in seeking out a partner...and often we are unaware of what our basic emotional needs are: for many people sex is the the way of unconsciously seeking to have our needs met...

In this formulation, we consider the elemental qualities involved: here we have Venus and Mars in earth, while the Moon is in water, which can at times work in harmony together...still the earth signs are concerned more with physical and material security, rather than emotional security...as such there can an imbalance in terms of a 'love connection' [Moon/Venus] which then modifies the Mars energy as to expressing in a more practical and discerning way. With Venus in opposition the Moon, there can be early problems with the mother, female relatives or connecting with other females...which will in turn later reflect in our intimate liasons with others. Venus in Capricorn can often indicate repressed sexuality or a sense of obligation in our relations with others. With these two factors in opposition, there is a greater tendency towards inner conflicts or misunderstandings that can create disharmony...the opposition demands some sort of reconciliation or resolution from within, in order to attain external harmony. In this case we might see a significant tendency towards smother-love: keeping in mind that earth can help to mitigate emotional over-reactions, but at the same time, water has the ability to carve out the foundations laid by earth. Water signs will often avoid confrontations by moving around the rock [earth], eroding the stability of the on's physical foundations.

Indeed I am primarily talking about intimacy here, rather than the baser instincts of sexuality...yet still Mars in Virgo can also imply co-dependencey issues due to feelings of insecurity or lack of confidence which then influences the sexual expression. From a 'higher perspective' sex is much more than a physical need, it is also connected to an expression of divine love and connection to the spirit. Call me crazy....

Now what might you say about Moon in Pisces, Venus in Leo and Mars in Capricorn...here we have the elemental interaction between Water, Fire and Earth? Comments...

The Eighth House - conception
The eighth house covers sex, death, and other people's resources. Most beginning astrologers question how these areas of life are related, and the explanation offers insight into some of life's most intriguing activities. The lives of others impact our lives on a moment-to-moment basis. Every human interaction engages the mental, emotional, material or spiritual resources of at least one other person. Sexual response and sexual expression form a fundamental area for us to cultivate the spiritual connection with others through the physical connection.”

According to traditional astrology the 8th house is the precarious domain of sex, death and money. But, it has been my experience that the 8th house goes much deeper than these obvious realities”

Re: Sexual Nature

I think it would be difficult to meet all of these needs initially. Although Venus in Pisces and Moon in Neptune could share in a sense of drama and fantasy, Moon in Pisces would rather lose itself in another than risk the isolation of finding self-worth through expressing one's unique individuality (Venus in Leo). Mars in Capricorn's need for strong boundaries would unsettle Moon in Pisces' fear of loneliness, but they could share a need to make sacrifices. Mars in Capricorn would perhaps share Venus in Leo's need for self-determination, but would tend to resist what it would see as foolhardy flamboyance.

Sexually, I imagine that Mars would be the most difficult planet, because of its tendency to pursue its desires in a relatively cold and hard manner, and this would grate with the fantasy life of Venus and the Moon. Stereotypically speaking, a man with these placements may be attracted to partners for whom fantasy, subtlety and glamour are important features of sex, and while he is able to enjoy that to a point, his sex drive may not be aroused by it. A woman with these placements might be frustrated by her partners' tendency to suddenly snap into Capricorn mode when sexually aroused, rather than see the atmosphere through to the end of love-making.

Venus in Leo - the person who likes more clear and direct (some of them LOUD!) displays of attention, not out of Virgo-type insecurity but instead a little ego fluffing. All of the girls I've known with this one were loud and proud dressers too - never a shrinking violet, dressed and spoken to be seen and known. The real pleasure is how warm these people are socially, and the magnet pull of people around them is something to be seen! Do you like partners make their appreciation of you known? Do you like exchanging gifts now and again just to re-affirm feelings?!

Mars in Capricorn as we've seen is ambitious and determined and sex and romance can take a back seat. The individuals I met with this one were all wealthy and left little time to dating/partners. The earthy and ambitious mixture might make quite a determined spirit in the males, with plans that need to be achieved in the bedroom, while I wouldn't expect the females to be shy or reticent in any way, knowing exactly who and what they want.

The Moon in Pisces has so very different intentions to Venus in Leo and Mars in Capricorn, the Moon has simple ideas and pleasures and can relax in atmospheres not needing for anything. The Leo-Venus act could surprise people with it's social forthrightness and gregariousness, but I'd say at times the Moon just pines for simpler activities, not the spotlight. I'd expect placid eyes and perhaps face, with the chance of bursting into high-voltage social action always possible, and that Mars plans, has ideas and wants to achieve them. The Mars and Venus could work well together when dealing with others - liked and an enabler to one's ambitions.

Re: Sexual Nature

I thought it might be instructive to look at a chart or two regarding this topic.

I've chosen the charts of two actors; one who is probably one of the most famous actors of both gay and straight pornography, Jeff Stryker, and a "legit" actor who has been known for years as a major womanizer, Warren Beatty.

Jeff Stryker

"Someone had labeled me a 'straight actor in gay ****,' but 'universal,' I think, is the only word I could actually use to describe my sexuality. I think humans are humans. I could be sitting next to god knows what and get turned on" -- Jeff Stryker

Many of the indicators that I mentioned are apparent. I've looked at quite a few charts of **** actors, both male and female, and the Venus signs are quite prevalent.

Gemini Rises with hot-to-trot Mars, ruler of the 6th and 11th, in the first house. In classical astrology the 11th house is known as the house of hopes and dreams fulfilled. Mars is in Gemini, who "goes both ways", and he has done gay, straight and bisexual ****.

Venus is in her own sign of Libra and is in her joy, the 5th house. This intensifies all of her significations that correlate with sensual delights and pleasure. The Part of Fortune is also there, which is highly significant.

The Moon is in Taurus, another Venus sign and is separating from benefic Jupiter in Pisces, his own sign (I don't use modern rulers) and the exaltation of Venus.

Mercury, the ruler of the Ascendant, is opposing the Jupiter and trining the Moon.

One of the things I'm seeing in many **** actors charts are the signs Leo and Taurus. For ****, you really need to have a healthy dose of exhibitionism, which is essentially a solar or Leonine function, and we see that Stryker was born with Sun in Leo trining the first house Mars.

As far as the 8th house goes, Saturn, the ruler, is squaring the Moon and trining the Venus. Although I don't use the 8th to represent the sexual nature per se, the 8th house does represent the sex organs, and it's interesting to note that the very well endowed Mr. Stryker has a highly dignified 8th house ruler (Saturn in Aquarius - once again, I don't use modern rulerships) in the 8th house. Make of the retrogradation whatever you will.

Warren Beatty

Virgo rises, and Mercury is conjunct the Sun in the 7th house. Prior to the renaissance, the 7th house was the primary indicator of sexual intercourse because of its correlation with the Sun's penetration of the horizon at Sunset. The 7th is also the house of "the other" or marriage partner. Sun and Mercury are in assertive Aries, Mercury trining Mars himself in Sagittarius, the hunter's bow. Kind of illuminates the saying "on the prowl". This guy goes for what he wants.

Moon is in Scorpio, and we all know what part of the Scorpio represents. If we remember that the Moon represents what we reach for in response to stimulus, we start to get something of a picture. In my earlier post I talked about how sexual the water signs are and how the Moon rules our appetites. The Moon is again in relationship to Jupiter, this time in earthy Capricorn, she is also trining Saturn in Pisces, ruler of the 5th. Jupiter, ruler of the 7th, is right on the cusp of the 5th as well. Jupiter enlarges whatever he touches, and brings enthusiasm to the house he occupies. Also, Saturn and Jupiter are in mutual reception (Jupiter is ancient ruler of Pisces), making a strong connection between the 5th and 7th house. This person is very much oriented towards hunting out romances, relationships and sexual dalliances.

Venus is Taurus with the Part of Fortune in the 8th house by cusp, but 9th house by whole sign. She makes no aspect (I only use Ptolemaic aspects) but aspects the Moon by sign, she is also retrograde. Taurus is tactile and sensual. Once again, it looks like, in relation to sexual nature, the 8th house gives an indicator of how much of a preoccupation one has with the genital area.

Some interesting correlations between both charts.

Re: Sexual Nature

Agarth,

I actually had a full reply ready to go but had to go offline. -starts again-

Two great examples you laid out there. Your analysis stands up to what you delineate. And you say you've studied a few charts of people in the industry? I have to say I would not look at those details in a chart and think 'well this person's well endowed' or 'he's h like a pup' I see it better when it's laid out like that but I've a while to go before I could detect that. Some really good examples, again.

I've a question which borders on psychology/sociology...does anyone think that evidence of a high sex drive in a natal chart raises the chance of infidelity? Ooops I better add to that, it's not meant to be too general or suggestive. Would it at least be fair to say that a partner with a similar appetite is imperative?

Yes, Jupiter in the 8th indeed!

It certainly will take me a while to pin this stuff in a chart. I see the connection but need some time to get the picture.

Hello.
If you want to know about the sexual nature of someone then you should look to his/her mars and venus.
The signs where mars is will provide information about the sexual nature of the person... How she/he will act, how it's his sexual behavior. Venus is more associated with sensuality, what the persons like, what attracts her/him... The house where mars is will give information of where those desires will manifest... While the house of venus the sector of the person where romance will come to life.

8th house is associated with death, sex, other's persons money, inheritances, .... Well i think the most important part is where is the ruler of 8th house (than where is the 8th house?). The ruler of 8th house will provide mutch more information, and i am not just talking about sexual nature. 8th extendes to other sectors...
Now to the 5th house.. 5th house is associated to fun, games, parties and children. Since it's related to pleasure, sex is very associated to him. But kids and children are also 5th house busyness (and no, it's the house of pedophiles..) So here sex is more than a way of pleasure... it's a way of procreate. Again i think it's ruler and the aspects to it are mutch more informative than the house himself.

Another words of wisdom A50! How uncanny for me to have a 8th house sign myself, also associated with conception and pregnancy.

I mentioned before Cancer was ascending, the sign well symbolized by maternity and parental guidance, and Scorpio the 8th sign of the zodiac, shares similar attributes of feminine sexual feeling and medical science: their committed ethical code of conduct and health care, esp. for women during pregnancy and childbirth, are important but in my 5th house.

Venus is the planet of beauty and Mars the planet controls sexual affairs, but the two planets are about romance and one book of advice written 20 years ago titled "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" is no coincidence.

Wink Re: Sexual Nature

What about Mars, Jupiter or even Saturn or the presence of Lilith in the 3rd house and its relation to sexuality, marriage and child-bearing? This is rather a powerful potent place to determine such fields of ones' love life. And in my case, Virgo is the 3rd house: the sign of casual romance influenced by the ruling Planet Mercury, and when it falls in its' exact opposite sign Pisces.

Re: Sexual Nature

In my opinion (and in the opinion of pre-modern and non-psychological astrologers - if you read them carefully), the only sex covered by the 8th House is that where a monetary arrangement has been made in compensation for such.

Lilly speaks of in his section on the 8th House "Dowry of the Wife, Portion of the Maid, whether much or little, easie to be obtained or with difficulty." (Portion refers to the money bequeathed to unmarried women to attract men to marry her.)

As far as houses go, I prefer the use of the 5th and 7th houses in matters relating to sex as either a pleasurable activity or part of a relationship.

Ramesey, in "Astrology Restored" gives the 7th House to "Venusian Sports" - as it were.

As far as planetary significators go, I'd use Venus as the natural ruler of sex, in addition to the the 5th and 7th rulers.

For sex and other relationship issues, I highly recommend Kim Farnell's recent book, "Star Crossed" - which can be found at Amazon and elsewhere.

I thought this was an excellent post; thanks!!! My only comment was that I was surprised that it was the profusion of water signs in the chart; I would've thought it would've been fire signs.

Re: Sexual Nature

For both sexes, Mars and aspects that enhance or limit his expression are most telling.
Men and Women both ACT OUT their sexual nature based on their Mars.
The human race is propegated based on Mars.
Mercury, as well ~ the biggest sex organ, resting between our ears, reminder that imagination is powerful in sexual nature.
