The People's King!
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, born 21 February 1980
is the son of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck
and is the current reigning Druk Gyalpo or Dragon King
of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
He became King on 9 December 2006.
A public coronation ceremony was held on 1 November 2008, an auspicious year
that marked 100 years of Monarchy in Bhutan.

His Majesty's education was in schools within the country
followed by high school and university in the USA and the UK.
His Majesty also attended the 2005 program
of the National Defence College in New Delhi, India.
Furthermore, His Majesty has received Honorary Doctorates
from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, Rangsit University and Naresuan University, Thailand
Calcutta University, India, and Keio University, Japan.

On 25 June 2002, the then Crown Prince was awarded the Red Scarf
by Drukgyal Zhipa at the Samteling Palace.
On 31 October 2004, The then Crown Prince
was installed as the 16th Trongsa Penlop in Trongsa Dzong.
Prior to Bhutan’s full transition to parliamentary democracy
His Majesty travelled across the country to meet with the people
and discuss the then draft constitution introducing the new political system.
Under the guidance of His Majesty the King
and His Majesty the fourth King
the country has been advancing towards democratic governance
from the early ‘80s.
Following these consultations and detailed discussions
in the National Assembly, the constitution of Bhutan
was put to a nationwide referendum in June 2008
and adopted.
His Majesty has stated that as King
one of his biggest and most sacred responsibilities
is to strengthen parliamentary democracy in Bhutan.
Since the formal coronation, King Jigme Khesar’s first landmark project
was the launching of the National Cadastral Resurvey in March 2009.
The programme is aimed at resolving long-standing land issues
of excess land that affects every Bhutanese household.
The King has also been giving land to landless farmers
around the country.
The on-going project takes the King to remote villages and communities.
On 20 May 2011, the King announced his engagement to Jetsun Pema.

They Royal Couple were married on 13 October 2011
in the Punakha Dzong.
During the ceremony the King also received the Crown of the Druk Gyal-tsuen (Queen)
from the most sacred Machhen temple of the Dzong
and bestowed it on Her Majesty Jetsun Pema, hereby formally
proclaiming her the Queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
On 11 November 2015, it was announced that Their Majesties
were expecting their first child, a son, early in 2016.
Their Majesties announced, via their Facebook pages
the arrival of HRH The Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck
who was born in Lingkana Palace on 5 February 2016.

Druk Gyaltsuen!
Her Majesty Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema was born in JDWNR Hospital, Thimphu,
on 4 June 1990 to Yab Dhondup Gyaltshen and Yum Sonam Choki.
Her Majesty is the second oldest of five children.
Her Majesty did her schooling from various places such as the Little Dragon School
Sunshine School, Changangkha Lower Secondary School
Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School in Thimphu, Bhutan
St. Joseph’s Convent in Kalimpong, West Bengal, India
and The Lawrence School in Himachal Pradesh, India.
Later, she enrolled at Regent’s College in London
where she graduated international relations
with psychology and art history as minor subjects.

On 20 May 2011, during the opening of the Parliament's seventh session,
the king announced their engagement.
The Royal Couple married on 13 October 2011, at Punakha Dzong.
The Royal Wedding ceremony was held first in Punakha
followed by a public celebration in Thimphu and Paro.
During the ceremony, the King bestowed the Crown of the Druk Gyaltsuen on her
formally proclaiming her as the Queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema accompanied His Majesty on several of His Majesty's Royal Visits
to various parts of Bhutan before the Wedding, and as Queen of Bhutan
accompanies His Majesty on all of such visits.
The Royal Visits on road through the country
involves meeting and interacting with
as many local people, students
and public servants as possible.

Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen is an advocate of environmental issues :smile:
and the Patron of the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN).
She is also the UNEPOzone Ambassador.
Her Majesty works closely with various organisations working with children
with special needs as the patron of Ability Bhutan Society.
She is the Patron of the Bhutan Kidney Association
(Jigten Wangchuck Tshogpa) and the Bhutan Kidney Foundation.
Her Majesty is also the President of the Bhutan Red Cross Society (BRCS).
On 11 November 2015, it was announced that Their Majesties were expecting their first child
a son, early in 2016. Their Majesties announced, via their Facebook pages, the arrival of
HRH The Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck
who was born in Lingkana Palace on 5 February 2016.
