William Lilly said:
Of the Magistery, Exercitation or Profession of the Native.

Astrologers name the Magistry of the Native, a Study or Delight, an Art or Action wherein anyone leads his Life, gets his Living, preserves his Estimation, and wherein he spends the principal part of his Life, whether it be public, as of Kings or Princes, whereof some administer Justice; others Military Exercises; others Huntings; others delight in other actions; others in Philosophy and Theology; others in the Mathematics.

Or whether his Profession be private, either learned from another, or attained by his own industry, or mechanical, laborious, and for pleasure; for doubtless every man has inclination more or less to some one Quality, Profession, &c.[et cetera] or another.

Three things are wont to be considered in this Judgment.

First, Whether the Native is to have any Magistery at all, viz.[videlicet:namely] any Trade, Study or Profession; or whether he shall be without any.

Secondly, The kinds of his Art or Study, what it may be.

Thirdly, What fortune he shall have therein, and whether he shall prove famous therein yea or no.

The Significators are taken in this manner.

[1.] You are to consider Mars, Venus, and Mercury; Mercury shows the Wisdom and parts of the mind; Mars the strength of the body to endure; Venus the Delight; If then any of these is posited in places of Heaven fit to design Magistery, that is, in the tenth, first or seventh, in their own Dignities, not combust, or under the Sun's beams, that Planet so posited, or those Planets, shall have signification of the Art, Profession or Magistery the Native is inclined to.

[2.] If no one of those Planets is so posited, consider if any of the three be Lord of the Sign of mid-heaven, and placed in his essential Dignity; for if he be Peregrine or in his Fall, he is not capable to undergo this signification.

[3.] If this consideration take not place, see if any of these three Planets behold the Moon in partile, if two or all three do behold her, prefer the strongest, and him that has the best aspects, and that aspect which is most partile, and the sinister before the dexter.

[4.] If none of three before named Planets behold the Moon, see which of them aspects the Moon, within the moiety of her Orbs and with a powerful aspect, that Planet shall you take to signify the Child's [Native's] Magistery, so that he be not afflicted of the malignant Planets, either by corporal conjunction or square or opposition, for if he be so, you must not accept him..

[5.] If none of these considerations will hold, take him of the three Planets who according to the first mover [diurnal motion] antecedes [precedes] the Sun, and give to him dominion of the Profession.

You must observe, if none of these three Planets shall signify the quality of the Native's Profession, according to the first or second rule, but according to the third, fourth, or fifth; such usually handle some ignoble Profession, and manage it negligently, or else lead their life without any Magistery or Art at all.

I have ever gathered much knowledge concerning the Trade of any that came to me, from the Sign of the tenth, from the Sign and house wherein the Lord of the tenth was placed.

Ptolemy his judgment was, that the Lord of one's Profession was to be taken two ways; from the Sun, and from the Sign of the mid-heaven, and advises to consider that Planet who rises next before the Sun in the Morning, and the Lord of mid-heaven, or Planet therein, if he behold the Moon; and if it chance that one Planet does not only rise next before the Sun, but shall also be Lord of the tenth, or posited in the tenth, this Planet shall be Master or Significator of the Actions and Arts of the Native: if one Planet perform not both these works take him that does the one.

I will post the next chapter tomorrow. I'm tired.

Here is the next chapter:

William Lilly said:
Several experimented Aphorisms concerning the Native's Magistery, Trade or Profession.

In the first place, if the Significator of Art of Magistery stand single, he gives the quality of Profession according to his own nature, either Venereal, Mercurian or MArtial: but if he be joined strongly with another Significator of Art, there's a mixture of natures intended; so that if Mercury be Lord of the Profession, in a strong and forcible good aspect of Mars, Mercury relinquishes his claim to the Art, and the Native follows wholly what manner of Trade Mars in the Sign and house he is in signifies; do you judge so in the rest: The rest of the Planets, Signs, and Houses, do augment or diminish the significations, Jupiter he assists, Saturn does mischeif, Sun gives power with the Magistery, the Moon gives credit with the Common people: Jupiter loves Religion, Simplicity, Oratory, Saturn delights in Slothfulness, Covetousness, Heaviness, long Consultations, Sorrowfulness, Misery, Want and penury; where Saturn does strongly incline to the disposition of the Art, it's a miracle if the Native proves not a husbandmen, a Sailor, a Porter or carrier of Burdens, a Shepherd, Sexton of a Church, &c. but that we may more fully discover the quality of Profession, observe the succeeding Aphorisms.

Of Mercury when he is Lord of the Profession.

Mercury signifies the Spirit, or Fancy of the Brain, and what proceeds from thence; therefore he gives that Trade or Profession which is performed by the industry and working of the Brain or Mind, than by the strength of the Body; such like things are Letters, Numbers, Writing, Learning, Eloquence, Arithmetic, Astrology, Philosophical Speculations, Merchandise, Poetry, the framing of artificial Engines or things, &c. He therefore makes Grammarians, chief Secretaries, Arithmeticians, Geometricians, Philosophers, Poets, men full of employment, given to Merchandising and Traffic, men given to Discipline; yet notwithstanding if Mercury be not in any good aspect of Jupiter, the Native profits nothing, or gets and fortune by his Endeavours.

Mercury his signification when joined with others.

Mercury either joined by body or aspect to Saturn (although sextile or trine is best, the square or opposition of Saturn to Mercury, usually impeding the Speech or Tongue) he makes such men perform servile Offices in other men's employments, or such as lead their miserable Life in or about Churches, by supplication for Alms or agitating the affairs of the Church, &c. but if Mercury have the same aspect from or to Mars, he makes Husbandmen, Sailors, Shepherds, or Cow keepers, Curriers, Botchers, Tailors, Stonecutters or Carvers, Interpreters of Dreams, Sorcerers, superstitious, peevish men of hidden faculties.

Mercury in conjunction or aspect with Jupiter, makes excellent Orators, of great justice in judging Causes, circumspect and just in rendering the Law, equally moderate in refraining from anything; ir makes the Native Friends of great Persons, Divines, Lawyers, Rhetoricians, Judges, and Exchanger or Banker of Moneys.

Mercury bodily joined with Sun, so he bot not Retrograde or Combust, but in the Heart of the Sun, or Cazimi, or in any of his dignities, he puts the Native in the way to be acquainted and to have conversation with Magistrates, men of great Fortunes, he makes Scribes, Receivers or Treasurers of Moneys, Overseers, or employed as Offices in taking public Accounts for the King or Common wealth, Councillors, chief Justices, doing all their actions nobly: if Mars have any testimony with Sun and Mercury, he inclinesto Chemistry, to clip or coin Money, especially if Saturn have the least aspect with the former Significators.

Mercury with the Moon, or in any good aspect of her, increases his Understanding, and inclines the Native to be desirous of knowing futurities, or things to come, very propense to Divination, especially if the Moon apply to Mercury in Taurus, Capricorn or Cancer; if the application be in Virgo or Scorpio, he makes Astrologians, &c.

In Aries, Leo, Libra, men divining of things to come, freely of their own accord, without any Art.

In Sagittarius or Pisces, he makes men given to Magic, either in hope or dissemblingly: Mercury with Venus, either conjunct, or by radiation of sextile aspect (for she have no other to Mercury) inclines to Eloquence, and a great variety of Manners.

Of Venus when she alone designs the Profession.

She signifies of herself Pleasure, Delight, Tenderness, Delicacy, Feastings, Guests, and all such things as tickle the senses with Pleasure.

She is a reat enemy to LEarning and Discipline, nor is she overcome but by SAturn, men therefore wholly given to their Book are of harsh Manners.

When she alone designs the Magistery, she makes Apothecaries, Druggists, Grocers, Perfumers, Vintners, Victualliers, Painters, Jewellers, Tire-makers, Wardrobe-keepers, Musicians, &c.

Venus mixed with others:

Venus commixed with Saturn, makes Merchants, or such as Trade in things or Commodities tending to Pleasure; but if either of them be ill affected, they make Scoffers, Jesters, cunning sly Knaves, Alehouse-keepers, Magicians in show, but not in very deed; poor, simple Painters, or of what Art soever, such as we call a piece of a Workman, or a pretender to such or such a Trade. Venus mixed in signification with Jupiter, makes Divines, Physicians, Mercers, Linen-Drapers, Silk-men, Seamstresses, Haberdashers or small WAres and chooses great Preferment to come by Women or Religion. Venus Combust of the Sun does not signifiy an Art, but in the heart of the Sun, she gives great store or Wealth, yet if she be in any of the Dignities of the Sun, she makes the Artist more excellent, and shows his Fame and Estimation to be more great, and his profit more certain.

Of Mars when he alone is Significator of Profession.

Mars signifies such laborious and hard Profession which require both the strength and endeavor of the whole body, he therefore principally governs Manual Occupations, which are toilsome, and exercised of themselves by fire; if the Sun be in aspect with him, yet the Profession is performed by fire: In a nocturnal Geniture he rather imports Warfare, Honour and glory obtained by Wars: Being well constituted he makes Soldiers, Horsemen, Captains, Commanders of Armies, Huntsmen, &c. If he be meanly dignified, he makes Champions, Copper and Iron-smiths, Founders, Engineers, makers of all Iron Instruments, Husbandmen, Physicians, Surgeons, Stonecutters, Carpenters, Architects, but if weak, he makes Cooks, Wood-cleavers, Curriers, Labourers, Pirates, Thieves.

Mars mixed with Saturn in significations, or afflicted by his square or opposition loses his dominion wholly of Magistracy, especially if Venus or Mercury be better placed, and Mars himself be Retrograde, or else in this case quite takes off all Military signification, because of Saturn his fearfulness: From such a position you shall predict Ditchers or Day-labourers, Gardeners, Crossbow makers, Fletchers, Dressers of Leather; if he be placed in an abject place of Heaven, he makes Colliers, Sweepers of Chimneys, Fire-makers, Charcoal-makers or burners, Millers, Night-farmers, &c. Mars and Jupiter well posited, makes complete Courtiers, fortunate in the Commands of War; but if they be unhappy by aspect or position, he makes Herdsmen, Bailiffs, Caterers to Gentlemen, Doorkeepers, Sutlers in Armies, Tobacco shop keepers.

Mars with Sun, inclines to Magistracy rather than to a Profession; yet if they unhappily aspect each other, he makes Goldsmiths (I mean working Goldsmiths) Coiners of Money, or such as dig in Gold Miners, or are conversant in minting Moneys.

Mars with Moon makes Butchers, if Saturn together with Mars and Moon have any rule, he imports Hedgers, Day-labourers, Fishermen, Watermen, Brewers, Dyers.

Of Mercury and Venus commixed.

If they signify the Art or Profession, they discern one very ingenious, performed by a voluble or pleasant Tongue, the Native is loquacious, fickle, full of jollity; they usually make Musicians, especially when they are in a Venereal Sign, Poets, Orators, Dancing Masters, Tumblers or Dancers upon Ropes, Painters, makers of Complexion-water for soft Dames, Wax-chandlers, Limners, Writers of Stage-plays, &c. Writing Masters, School-Masters.

If both or either of them behold Saturn, the Profession is not then so light, but of more gravity, they sell or make Women's Clothes, or such Sruffs or Ornament as they delight in, &c.

Jupiter, Venus and Mercury authors of the Profession, in the third, fifth, eleventh, makes excellent Pedagogues or Instructors of Youth; Preachers or Advocates; if in the ninth, Lawyers, or men administering public affairs, in the twelfth.

Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon gives admirable Eloquence; excellent Poets if Jupiter be with Nort Node, and then in any good aspect with Mercury or Venus.

Physical and Poetical strains are from the aspect of Mars, Venus, and Mercury. He is a good Chanter and Singing-man, where Mercury Retrograde is joined with Venus in the same Sign

Of Mercury with Mars.

Mercury with Mars obtaining the designation of Art, being well disposed, they produce most sharpe conceptions, Men of piercing understandings, Physicians, Surgeons, Armorers, makers of Statues, Images, Champions; Alchemists, Gravers, many times public Notaries, Surveyors, Printers of Books; if they are ill placed, they prove Dice-makers, Clippers of Money, a falsifier of Evidences, a Tale carrier or Pick-thanke, a Whoremonger. Saturn associated with Mars and Mercury makes Thieves, Counterfeiters of Money, Murderers, Composes of poisons, Cheating Gamesters. But Jupiter in place of Saturn makes good Councillors, Attorneys, Advocates, Civil Lawyers: but if Jupiter his aspect to Mars and Mercury be ill, it imports Covetous men, vainglorious fellows, jangling Attorneys.

Mars, Mercury and Moon in conjunction not well dignified, makes Thieves and House-breakers, Cheaters, or cozening fellows. If Saturn be in the seventh, such Knaves come to the Gallows.

Mars and Venus significators or Art.

When such a placement is, expect labour and pleasure in the Profession, boldness or confidence with flattery or dissimulation: from hence you may judge, Cooks, Poulterers, excellent Physicians; Barbers, Apothecaries, Surgeons, Gardeners, Dyers, &c. Mars and Venus ill placed and ill fortified, show a Bawd or Pander.

Mars and Venus with the society of Saturn, makes Sextons of Churches, or shows such poor Priests as daily attend the Sick, take care of Souls, which no fat Priest will do, whether Prelatical or Presbytarian; or they import Grave-makers, or Epitaph-makers upon Tombs, &c.

Mars and Venus with Jupiter, makes most zealous in Religion, and very good Teachers, not at all covetous; Oh monstrum horrendum, A Minister and not covetous.

With what success.

The success which may be expected from the Profession is required from the strength of the Significator, or the Lord of Magistery: if he be potent in Essential dignities, and not afflicted by the malevolent partile configuration of the Infortunes, and be also posited in the angles of the Figure, and Oriental, it's an argument, the Native proves a famous Workman, excellent and surmounting most of his Profession, that he shall gain great Estimation thereby, and be in public Reputation therefore.

But if the Significator be weak, Occidental or Cadent, oppressed by the Infortunes, that Native proves but a Botcher, a man of no very great parts, still beholding to others, contemptible, not thriving by his Art, everyone disdaining his Workmanship: Where note, that when Saturn does afflict the Significator, the Native proves a Sluggard, a LAzy Fellow, fearful to put himself foward.

If Mars impede, the man is rash, obstinate, conceited, infamous: If both the Infortunes at one time afflict the Significator, then the afflictions he runs into by his profession are numberless, or have no end.

The nature of the Signs wherein the Significator or Significators are placed, does much conduce to this manner of Judgment, which I again repeat in a more full measure than formerly: they are as follows.

Movable Signs, as Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, conduce to such Arts or professions as require a witty capacity, in regard they are directed by contemplation of the Wit, viz. Geometry, Physic, Astrology, &c.

Fixed Signs do also require Learning or Education, except Scorpio.

Human Signs, viz. Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius, as they signifiy human affections, so do they import such proper Arts to a man as are liberal, and have especial use in the life of man, and are taught with Authority.

Watery and Earthly Signs as Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus, Capricorn, shows professions conversant about the Water and Earth, as upon Meadows, Herbs, Medicine, Ships, Fish or Funerals.

Four-footed Signs, as Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, show Mechanical professions, Butchers, Grasiers, Builders, Curriers, Cutters of Stones, Diggers of Stones, Clothiers, Wool-winders.

Albubater a learned Arabian Physician, out of whose writings most of our Astrological Aphorisms are collected, does distribute the Signs thus, and says:

Fiery Signs signify Trades or professions conversant in fire, whether it be in Smithery or working in Goldsmithery, or in Baking or Glass-making, &c.

Earthly Signs show earthly occupations, or proceeding from the Earth, as pot-making, Ditching, Digging, Delving, makers of Mud-walls, or Dirt-daubers.

Airy Signs import Singers, Jesters, Fowlers, Millers, Shooters.

Watery Signs declare Fishermen, Laundresses, Fullers of Cloth, Watermen, Tankard-bearers.

Quality of the Profession.

The quality and kind of Art, Magistery or Profession may be known from the nature and propriety of the three planets discerning profession, which I said before were Mars, Venus and Mercury, and from the Sign the possess, and the configurations which they or any of them have with other planets; wherein always the most powerful aspect is preferred before the weak, and if two planets have dominion in designing Magistery, the most fortified planet is first preferred.

It were needless here to repeat the several professions every planet designs, seeing I have exactly performed it in the first part of this work, from page 57 to 83 to which I refer the Reader: wherein I have shown the natural significations of every planet by himself, which notwithstanding are intended or remitted as they stand in configuration with other planets: for if Saturn with his malignant aspect be commixed with Mars in designing of the profession, instead of Soldiers, he makes slavish Soldiers, poor, vulgar, common Soldiers, Scullions, Drudges, slaves, and such inferiour fellows; instead of Surgeons, he makes Night-farmers, Slaughter-men, sweepers of Channels, Ragmen and women, Chimney-sweepers, Waterbearers, dirty slovenly Carmen, beastly Cookes, Hucksters, Hagglers that buy and seel and forestall the Markets, Curriers, Cobblers, a keeper of Bawdy-houses or Stewes, Bum-bailies, shirking Sergeants, inferiour Officers, undertaking sordid matters.

If Jupiter aspect Mars, he designs more noble Professions, as Captains, Officers of War, Men of kingly thoughts, Receivers or Farmers of Customs.

If Sun behold Mars, he adds to the quality of the profession, making it more neat civil, and to trade in better and more famous Commodities.

Mercury and Jupiter makes famous Orators, learned Lawyers, Judges, exercising their faculties with men of great renown, viz. with the most eminent of that Country wherein they live, whether King, Prince or Nobleman, &c.

Mercury with Saturn, argues, busy fellows, wrangling Solicitors, undertaking all things, performing nothing, Turners, Potters, Curriers, Botchers, &c.

Sometimes it imports simple Animals that pretend knowledge in future Contingencies without Art of Learning, superstitious people, Heretics, &c.

Saturn in Aspect with Venus, both of them ill affected, or but one of them, makes Bawds, Harlots, Weavers, Victuallers.

You must observe, Signs which are of human form or shape, as Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius, Libra, do much conduce to the knowledge of liberal Arts, and of such as are most useful for Mankind.

Signs representing four-footed Beasts, as Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, inclines to Mechanical Arts, Architecture, dealing in Metals, MErchandizing, Manufacturing, Smithery or Forges.

Earthly and Watery Signs, as Taurus, Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, denote, Professions conversant about Waters or Rivers, as Ship Masters, Ship Carpenters, Fishmongers, Brewers, &c.

And that's all he wrote, folks. At least in this Book.

I apologize for any typos. Enjoy. :smile:

This was very hepful! Luckily for me, my MC and AC both signify Mercury (if using trad. Astrology) and Merc. Is placed in the 3rd house of libra. Venus is conjunct my IC in Sag, sextile my moon and Jupiter! And Mars is in triplicity in Cancer but no major aspects. And luckily, Saturn does not aspect them!

Although, saturn is part of a grand trine coming from my 6th house to the moon, jup. And MC... This might prevent me from being too successful, but I'll still be ok I think :)

Yeesh, whoever wrote this was certainly not shy about expressing their disdain for the 'lesser' aspects of society.

Of course, I speak partially out of spite as he has designated me as a commoner and a botcher. I do have a remarkable propensity for screwing up other people's work, which is why I prefer to do my own thing.

According to this person's formula, my significator of Magistery is Mercury.
My Mercury is in Virgo, the 8th house and is trine to both Saturn and Mars, sextile to the Moon and sextile to Pluto (Pluto is conjuct my MC, in the 10th house and ruled by Scorpio). I think both Mercury and Pluto have significant implications for my Profession.

Being trine to both Saturn and Mars causes;
"if Mercury have the same aspect from or to Mars, he makes Husbandmen, Sailors, Shepherds, or Cow keepers, Curriers, Botchers, Tailors, Stonecutters or Carvers, Interpreters of Dreams, Sorcerers, superstitious, peevish men of hidden faculties."

And then, because my Mercury is sextile to my Moon we have;
"Mercury with the Moon, or in any good aspect of her, increases his Understanding, and inclines the Native to be desirous of knowing futurities, or things to come, very propense to Divination, especially if the Moon apply to Mercury in Taurus, Capricorn or Cancer; if the application be in Virgo or Scorpio, he makes Astrologians, &c."

Mercury in Libra;
"In Aries, Leo, Libra, men divining of things to come, freely of their own accord, without any Art."

Mars has little ruling over my profession and it is interesting to note that I have had terrible misfortune whenever I have engaged in work that required physical labor (mostly caused by clumsiness). With Mars ruled by Taurus and squared to my Sun, I think that this is a very weak aspect in my chart. My Martian energy is paltry. Therefore I think it would be prudent for me to avoid professions of a physical or aggressive nature.

Venus is placed in the 7th house, ruled by Leo and conjunct Jupiter... overall not a bad alignment however not as influential as Mercury due to the multiple aspects and being sextile to the Moon.

Applicable influence of Venus;
"Venus mixed in signification with Jupiter, makes Divines, Physicians, Mercers, Linen-Drapers, Silk-men, Seamstresses, Haberdashers or small WAres and chooses great Preferment to come by Women or Religion. Venus Combust of the Sun does not signifiy an Art, but in the heart of the Sun, she gives great store or Wealth, yet if she be in any of the Dignities of the Sun, she makes the Artist more excellent, and shows his Fame and Estimation to be more great, and his profit more certain."

So with all this in mind... what professions would suit me? I'm thinking homeless schizophrenic who trades places with a billionaire later on in life.

This thread is for Arian Maverick and any others who are interested in the significators of career as taught by William Lilly. Enjoy.

I will post the next chapter tomorrow. I'm tired.

The entire Book 3 may be found here: http://books.google.com/books?id=JBB8ycvNCwYC&pg

*Note to moderators: this work is in the public domain, so no copyrights are violated here.
For a start that old prose is male oriented as befits the age of the chauvinist, sexism and the old world and the theories often inaccurate and narrow.. Indicating the professions of that era but not necessarily relevant to today. Neptune Pluto and Uranus not taken into consideration at all. Spare me!!!

Post your chart and I will look at your career options the modern way.
From what you say publishing, legal matters, print media, sales and communications, linguistics, travel industry, would be apt.... but I need to see the chart of course.

Question.

Venus is in my 7th. Neither Mars nor Mercury are in my 1st, 7th or 10th.

Does that mean Venus is my career significator? It is in Leo, not Taurus, Libra or Pisces and is somewhat near my Sun (Sun in Leo 24 degrees and Venus in Leo 4 degrees, so 20 degrees of separation I think avoids combustion).

Is Venus my significator?

Edit:

The post I made 2 years ago, I seem to have misunderstood the methodology.

My significator is Venus and in the sign of Leo denotes a professional artisan crafting things using fire (I'd have been a blacksmith in this guy's era perhaps). Certainly would be interesting work but it's not what I do.

I still don't understand this method. The point of confusion for me is whether Venus is my significator because it is in the 7th house however it is not domicile (it is in Leo) and, while just out of range of combustion, is uncomfortably close to the Sun (also in Leo with an orb of 19.30 degrees). Mercury however is partile to the Moon with an orb of .12, exalted in Virgo and receiving nothing but good aspects (aside from a minor sesquiquadrate from... Venus).

Venus receives a near partile (1.07 degree) quincunx from Uranus and no aspect to any other planet.

So would Venus be my significator because it is in the 7th and not quite combust or is Mercury my significator? Astrologically Mercury is the stronger of the two by a long shot and by Lilly's criterion I think it is the stronger but I am not sure.

The only problem Mercury encounters is it being in an intercepted sign (the Virgo/Pisces axis in my chart is contained entirely within the 2nd and 8th house axis, with Virgo falling in the 8th and Pisces in the 2nd). So it's an 8th house Mercury in Virgo with only good aspects, aside from a trine to Saturn which is technically bad in traditional astrology because Saturn is a malefic, but it is trapped in the 8th house by interception.

Edit: Okay I'm almost positive it's Mercury now.

Interesting that Lilly had this to say about the grand trine my Mercury takes part in (trines Mars in Taurus and Saturn in Capricorn);

Then we have this bit;

Going further, Mars is also nearly partile to the Moon in my chart, separated by 1.54 degrees. I would think using Lilly's method this makes Mars a cosignificator, the triangle Mars, Mercury and the Moon make in my chart (and the opposition from Saturn to the moon and its trine to Mars and Mercury) have a lot to do with my 'magistery' as does my Mercury's placement in the 8th house and my Midheaven in Scorpio. I think I am getting somewhere with this.

Mercury with Mars obtaining the designation of Art, being well disposed, they produce most sharpe conceptions, Men of piercing understandings, Physicians, Surgeons, Armorers, makers of Statues, Images, Champions; Alchemists, Gravers, many times public Notaries, Surveyors, Printers of Books;

However;

Saturn associated with Mars and Mercury makes Thieves, Counterfeiters of Money, Murderers, Composes of poisons, Cheating Gamesters.

I am not sure how to take the above as Mars is not 'well disposed' in my chart, being in the sign of its fall (Taurus) and the house of exile (the 4th, Cancer).

Going on;

Human Signs, viz. Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius, as they signifiy human affections, so do they import such proper Arts to a man as are liberal, and have especial use in the life of man, and are taught with Authority.

Mercury is in Virgo.

Watery and Earthly Signs as Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus, Capricorn, shows professions conversant about the Water and Earth, as upon Meadows, Herbs, Medicine, Ships, Fish or Funerals.

Both Mercury and Mars are in Earth signs and Water houses in partile to the Moon in Cancer.

The next part I am not sure if Lilly is describing all Saturn aspects as malignant (as he hinted at earlier in the passage) or only the hard aspects, so I am unsure if it applies;

for if Saturn with his malignant aspect be commixed with Mars in designing of the profession, instead of Soldiers, he makes slavish Soldiers, poor, vulgar, common Soldiers, Scullions, Drudges, slaves, and such inferiour fellows; instead of Surgeons, he makes Night-farmers, Slaughter-men, sweepers of Channels, Ragmen and women, Chimney-sweepers, Waterbearers, dirty slovenly Carmen, beastly Cookes, Hucksters, Hagglers that buy and seel and forestall the Markets, Curriers, Cobblers, a keeper of Bawdy-houses or Stewes, Bum-bailies, shirking Sergeants, inferiour Officers, undertaking sordid matters.

This next part does seem to apply;

Mercury with Saturn, argues, busy fellows, wrangling Solicitors, undertaking all things, performing nothing, Turners, Potters, Curriers, Botchers, &c.

Sometimes it imports simple Animals that pretend knowledge in future Contingencies without Art of Learning, superstitious people, Heretics, &c.

I have a Mars-Venus-Jupiter connection (Mars-Venus wide trine, Mars-Jupiter opposition, Venus-Jupiter quintile), and I'm very spiritually potent and want to work in the spiritual field... (Not religion though, since I'm Uranian in nature).

So it's an 8th house Mercury in Virgo with only good aspects, aside from a trine to Saturn which is technically bad in traditional astrology because Saturn is a malefic, but it is trapped in the 8th house by interception.

Edit: Okay I'm almost positive it's Mercury now.

Interesting that Lilly had this to say about the grand trine my Mercury takes part in (trines Mars in Taurus and Saturn in Capricorn);

Then we have this bit;

Mercury with Mars obtaining the designation of Art, being well disposed, they produce most sharpe conceptions, Men of piercing understandings, Physicians, Surgeons, Armorers, makers of Statues, Images, Champions; Alchemists, Gravers, many times public Notaries, Surveyors, Printers of Books;

However;

Going on;

The next part I am not sure if Lilly is describing all Saturn aspects as malignant (as he hinted at earlier in the passage) or only the hard aspects, so I am unsure if it applies;

for if Saturn with his malignant aspect be commixed with Mars in designing of the profession, instead of Soldiers, he makes slavish Soldiers, poor, vulgar, common Soldiers, Scullions, Drudges, slaves, and such inferiour fellows; instead of Surgeons, he makes Night-farmers, Slaughter-men, sweepers of Channels, Ragmen and women, Chimney-sweepers, Waterbearers, dirty slovenly Carmen, beastly Cookes, Hucksters, Hagglers that buy and seel and forestall the Markets, Curriers, Cobblers, a keeper of Bawdy-houses or Stewes, Bum-bailies, shirking Sergeants, inferiour Officers, undertaking sordid matters.

This next part does seem to apply;

Mercury with Saturn, argues, busy fellows, wrangling Solicitors, undertaking all things, performing nothing, Turners, Potters, Curriers, Botchers, &c.

Sometimes it imports simple Animals that pretend knowledge in future Contingencies without Art of Learning, superstitious people, Heretics, &c.

Attached my natal chart for reference.
I think Lilly described hard aspects to Saturn as malignant only, and not all aspects to Saturn.
