Significator of "the other woman"

Hello,
What if the question is "Is he seeing someone else?"/"Has he been in contact with another woman?" -- "he" is definitely the descendant ruler. Who would be the other woman? I've read somewhere that in this case her significator would be the ruler of the ascendant (don't remember the source). Do you agree? (As in, 7th house from the 7th house - hope it makes sense)
Or is it the Moon? 11th house ruler? Venus maybe? Or simply any planet in the 7th house?

The person who asks the question is the ascendent and its ruler. Their co-ruler is the moon.
The 7th is the person asked about, assuming this is a relationship and not a relative (brother, cousin), just a friend, or a casual lover.
In this case, you are not asking about his wife but "another woman", a love affair, so she would be the 5th from the 7th (his house of love affairs), which is the 11th.

I would look for a planet in one of his houses, or a planet in aspect with his significator.

For aspects does it matter if it's separating or applying?

The question determines the houses and significators involved.
Separating aspects show what has gone on up to the time the question was asked, applying shows what will take place.

Just take a look at what L7/sun/mars has been in contact with in its past aspects, also future ones too.
