Help - I am a beginner - Horary Astrology

Question - will my son be a doctor (his words to me - where - what are the odds?)

I don't have a good feel for horary astrology - I cast the chart for the time he asked me the question - I tried to limit the angles and take only very tight orbs. I used whole sign houses. Ascendant in Scorpio - trines Mars (traditional ruler of Scorpio) seems very interesting. The fact that this is in conjunction with Neptune (rules the 12th house is interesting). I read the threads but I thought it was interest that for this query sun opposes the ascendant and conjuncts the true node - this seemed to be more than coincidence. The ruler of the 9th is the moon - in the 12th house (medical care) in a trine with Saturn. Saturn (4th) squares the sun in the 7th - I assume - this won't be easy. I am not sure what to think about the square between the moon and mercury.

Any thoughts?

Hi Claudiasan

I´m not so skilled in horary, but I believe in this chart you should look for the 5th house ruler - your son ascendent - and the 6th and 10th houses from the 5th rulers, which rule your son employment and career. You should look also his 9th, of high studies, and maybe his 12th, which rules hospitals...

I thought you had to start by determining if the chart is readable - if the Asc is early in the sign (e.g. 0 degrees - its too early to answer this question) or late (29 degrees) its too late to answer this question things have already been decided. You then look at the Lord of the hour and establish if the lord of the hours "jives" with the lord of the Asc. In this case the Lord of the Hour was Jupiter - Lord of the Asc is Mars in Pisces does not really Jive with Jupiter in Aries. You then make sure the moon is not void of course (not making any aspects) - there are other exceptions which may not allow you to answer the question but I cant remember them. The only thing I can say here is that Jupiter is a benefic and it rules Pisces - this means Jupiter and Mars are in each others signs - mutual reception - this may good. I am not sure.

If you determine that you can analyze the chart - that is: you don't have any exceptions - you look at the querant (always the lord of the ascendant as per horary chart) - in this case its Mars - and the lord of the house that most represents the query - in this case sun - since Leo is in the 10th. It is a question about career. You can then look at the FIRST aspect the querant will make (future) i.e. conjunction with Jupiter (conjunctions - I have read some of the posts here and there is a debate as to whether its good or bad). The Moon should always be taken into account and it can represent a secondary querant - in this case its in the 12th house (never very good - but this question is about medicine which is very much a topic for the 12th house) trine saturn (any aspect to a malefic is presumably 'bad' - so not sure how to interpret that). the other thing I found interesting is that - in Chaldean planetary ordering system Mars rules the 10th - and here it is also the querant. I dont know - that is why I posted the question ;)

Anyone knows if this is the way to go about it?

I listened to Chris Brennan's podcasts on horary astrology and that is what I took away from it - it is really great - on spotify

Using my method, since your son asked the question he = querant = 1st house = Scorpio = mars.
Now, quesite\d here can be;
-medical education= 9th house = cancer = moon
-career = 10th house = Leo = sun
-his ideals = 11th house = Virgo = mercury

Moon flows to mars = + testimony for medical education
Sun flows away from mars = - testimony for medical career
Mercury flows away from mars = -te\stimony re to his ideal of becoming a doctor

So, 1 + and 2 - testimonies regarding this matter; best I can estimate at this time is: maybe yes, maybe no

It’s really confusing that you started 2 separate threads about the same chart. Now I can’t find the other one anymore that has the house system that’s NOT whole sign. That’s what I based my analysis on.

Horary works best with Regiomontanus houses: it's not about what house system you normally use in natal astrology, but what experts over the centuries thought worked best for horary. You can find a Regiomontanus option at Astrodienst. Part of the problem with whole signs is that we lose a lot of information with that system.

It's possible that Chris Brennan recommends whole signs: I've not heard his podcast. He is primarily a Hellenistic astrologer, however; so he may well use the house system that was generally used before the other ones were invented.

The rule is that you can ask a question only once, by any system of divination. So please keep the same time as with your initial question time.

Is this basically your son's question through you, or your own question? It matters which house we use for him.

Mars in Pisces and Jupiter in Aries are in mutual reception, which is beneficial.

Also the south node in the first house is a negative testimony so we want to make sure we get this one right.

I will try WSH houses

Since you asked about your son, he is 5th house ruler Jupiter

Doctor is a profession, so MC lord Mercury
Mercury will turn back retro and sextile Jupiter, however its deeply combust and will be retro - looks like a reach

I would say that its possible but only with great effort

For a Planet (like the Ascendant Ruler) in Detriment, it is important that it make an aspect to the 1st House (ie it is not inconjunct in the 2nd, 6th, 8th or 12th Houses), and for other significators that it aspect the House it rules. A Planet that is inconjunct to the House it rules can't witness or give testimony to the affairs of that House. That means it cannot control those events, and being weak in Detriment has even less control and less ability to effect outcomes.
