Sun square Mars

Your thoughts and experiences?

I have this aspect very very tight

I have a cousin who has it conjunct, but she just gets up and goes and gets on with it and challenges everyone and everything and is fearless, whereas I sit, wait, fume, plot, get frustrated with myself and things, (in later life in earlier life was just like her though not as combative) etc but the energy is the same

I read somewhere the square aspect was like changing gears but uncomfortably

What can make this powerful aspect unblock? And do wonders? At times in my life it has manifested easily and forcefully and felt so wonderful, and liberating, and what I did was applauded, but the examples are far and few between

if it makes any difference my mars is in cancer and sun in libra

My cousin has mars and sun in cancer and she is a ferocious advocate and so courageous

I have this aspect as the tightest aspect in my chart. Sun is in Scorpio, conjunct the Asc in the first house, which makes it pretty powerful. Mars is in Aquarius in the 3rd, and Aquarius is intercepted (i.e. it doesn't rule any house).

I think this makes the Sun the stronger of the two and my Mars is quite frustrated. I'm inclined to procrastinate, daydream, socialise - I lack the energy of Mars. I have fits of productivity but I cannot control them. I have no desire to exercise (other than a wish that I had a desire to be more active) and no physical stamina, other than an ability to get a lot of office work done (Mars in Aqua in the 3rd = good at office admin!). I'm very non-aggressive, and disinterested in sex.

Instead of any of the above I use the following:

(1) my sun for social interaction (conjunct the asc = personality that tends to get attention) instead of Mars for energy / drive
(2) a venus-pluto conjunction for relationships (I'm more sensual than sexual with others) instead of Mars;
(3) a Scorpio mercury for being quite cutting and critical as a defence mechanism instead of using Mars for aggressiveness.

All of those traits mean I can get by without my Mars but I would like to unlock it and unleash its potential.

I think its an interesting aspect for a man in particular, but nothing I really read on it seems to resonate.

My current attempt to unlock Mars has been to undertake to do more arm exercises (thinking that Mars in the third house might relate to my arms). Other than that, I used to be good at chess - but that's not the Martian energy I want to unlock! The only thing I think I can specifically point to my Mars for is my aggression to certain of my cousins and other distant family members, and my ability to throw complete curveballs to people and say / do something that is completely unexpected.

I have this aspect in my chart. As a consequence, I experience the following things:

1. Increased energy levels, quite strong and resistant body

2. I like physical training, weapons, all things martial

3. People say I am domineering, abrasive and insensitive at times

4. I can be quite easily angered, provoked into a fight and have a tendency to solve problems with force

5. This aspect - and the tremendous amount of anger it generates - is eventually going to cause heart trouble to me in the future

As I see, the Mars-Sun square has its advantages that are similar to the ones caused by the trine and sextile aspects, but its energy, unfortunately, could manifest in quite unconstructive ways, its negative effect upon health is its worst in my opinion.

My current attempt to unlock Mars has been to undertake to do more arm exercises (thinking that Mars in the third house might relate to my arms).

Yes, it does.

The Sun-Mars hard aspect brings a considerable amount of tension with it, in particular when it comes down to relationship (not just partners/married partners siblings are included here). Work stress can get a bit too much. Such individuals should take time out to rest and rejuvenate themselves every so often. It's a bit of clash of "energy titans", because Sun is the vitality and Mars the mental/physical energy. There are also tendencies of being brash in their day to day lives, thus taking too many risks and "playing dangerous" should most definitely be curbed. For obvious reasons they love playing with fire and/or anything that creates a spark. Such a native can also be quite argumentative particularly with siblings. Some with this aspects may experience sexual frustration, but not all.

On a positive note the aggression portrayed by this aspect can make this very attractive to many who come across them, both in a sexual way or in a friendly way. :)

Hi Saturnian,

Your description of the aspect is the description that doesn't work for me - I have a 24 Scorpio Sun and a 24 Aquarius Mars and I am not brash, I am very risk averse, do not play with fire, not argumentative (except with my cousins but even then they have a reputation so I am very cautious with them). Sexual frustration? More like heartbreak but I have Venus in the 12th.

The key point I am trying to make is that everyone talks about this aspect as having a lot of tension. But I am one of the most laid back people around, low blood pressure, no tension. Maybe that's because when some people have this aspect one planet dominates, and where the Sun is the dominating planet Mars shuts off? The normal literature seems to think that Mars dominates - so my question for people who feel tense or who seem to fit the textbook descriptions is whether they feel like they are in touch with their solar energy?

It's always amazing to have the odd exception here and there :). There must other factors, of course, in your chart that would probably counter the large of negatives in this aspect. Alternatively I would have a guess and say maybe the placement of either of the planets is pretty strong in your case, hence it may have strengthened the so called "weakness". But it definitely good to hear that you're relaxed and laid back rather than tensed.

The Sun-Mars square and opposition probably create problems with the father. Is that so for those of you who have these aspects?

I'm glad too! But I wonder with these kinds of aspects - usually astrologers will say that once this square is resolved, the native will have boundless energy and everything will be balanced and seamless. The fact that I am on the more lethargic end of the spectrum but not tense makes me think that I haven't resolved the square, and that, instead, the issues surrounding the square just sit dormant with Mars being comatose. So I am looking for ways of provoking it to see what latent issues there may be. Arm exercise is the most basic thing I can think of! Transiting Saturn will conjunct my Sun next year and square my Mars. I'm also interested in a woman who's Saturn and Moon conjunct my Sun and square my Mars.

I've done charts of people with Mars / Pluto aspects and when these are tense I've seen people completely shut off from anger. One native was so apathetic to life his parents sent him to a shrink. It's as if the tense aspect made him so full of rage, so passionate, that he couldn't handle it and quickly learned to shut down all those feelings at a young age. So now he is lethargic, apathetic and nihilistic. One woman with this aspect hates herself for her inner anger at other people and wishes to overcome/repress this energy. As a result she has no energy.

So I feel a real lesson for Mars aspects is the constructive use of anger / drive / competition. Shutting down these feelings because you think they are uncivilised is perhaps not the best solution, but I (and the people above) are still coming to grips with that!

As for my father - I see him as a hard worker, but I have never had a close relationship with him. He used to beat me a little as a child, but not in a way I resent him for - in his culture that kind of punishment was completely acceptable. I resent his narrow-mindedness. He was not a role model for masculinity as he comes from a completely different world and culture. But I know he loves me. So not an overly dramatic parent-child relationship. I have Jupiter in the 4th house so I am quite philosophical about these things!

I see my dad as a bit weak when dealing with other people - and then a bit too stern when dealing with his own family. As if he can't assert himself against the outside world (including his siblings) so he takes it out on us.

Ouch! Saturn - Sun will be a rollercoaster. I had mine back in September 2005. Around the 12th I start employment which I ended up leaving about 6 weeks later, as things didn't work out. Saturn squaring Mars will probably restrict physical energy. I have a tight Mars conjunct Sun so my square was a bit difficult for me to work out if it affected my Sun or Mars placement. With the person you're interested in, what's the interaction like? Is it sort of love/hate relationship?

He is rather lucky to have learned at a young age to tame that rage. Though I suppose the flip side of the coin may make such an individual cold at times. She on the other hand I presume has an opposition? It sounds like quite a power struggle of anger and yet wanting to repress this feeling.

So I feel a real lesson for Mars aspects is the constructive use of anger / drive / competition. Shutting down these feelings because you think they are uncivilised is perhaps not the best solution, but I (and the people above) are still coming to grips with that!

I know exactly what you mean by not having a close relationship with your father. I too am quite like that with mine. We argue virtually everyday. (Pluto in the 5th house). I've taken a great deal of beating from him - extremes. Philosophical about the domestic front eh? What sign is it in btw?

Hi Saturnian - to answer your question, Jupiter in the 4th is in Pisces! Intrigued by your Pluto being in the 5th - would you see this as influencing any relationship with your children (if you have any) - as if the past with your father will affect your own parenting style? That Pluto may give you the opportunity to transcend?

Cancer is a poor sign for Mars because Mars wants fast, forward action and Cancer worries what people will think and the ramifications of action. A libra sun exacerbates this because it also worries about what other people think about the actions you take. Should I? Shouldn't I? What will so-and-so think? Oh this is awful!

What other planets aspect the Sun and Mars, that provide with a positive outlet for energy?

I have Sun square Mars, but Mars is in Virgo and Sun in Gemini. My Sun is conjunct Mercury and Jupiter. My Mars is also in the 5th, and trine the ASC, so I'm very competitive. I can release energy through my Mercury and Jupiter by learning and exploring and doing other things. My Mars is also opposite Saturn so I alternate between apathy and full-on action. But, my Sun-Mars square is 5 degrees, not super tight, and has other aspects to release energy.
