SATURN is SOLE DOMICILE RULER of AQUARIUS

To determine whether
SATURN SOLE DOMICILE OF AQUARIUS
is
a PRIMARY RULER of a chart
or not
Hellenistic astrologers have a number of primary rulers
all of which have different functions
The first probably most important
is the PREDOMINATOR of a chart.
The predominator of a chart
is the luminary of time
sun by day or moon by night
PROVIDED IS NOT CADENT

If sun is cadent in a Day chart then moon is predominator.
If moon is cadent in a Night chart then sun is predominator.

If both luminaries are cadent
i.e.
if both Sun and Moon are
then
ascendant is the predominator.

If the domicile ruler of the ascendant is also cadent
use the Lot of Fortune.
Some find that:
The cadent luminary can still be predominator
IF it is in his/her own house of Joy
i.e.
Sun is in 9th
or
Moon is in 3rd.

The predominator = planet that represents the life of the native.
The trigon aka triplicity lords of the predominator
tell use the thirds of life of the native
i.e.
first trigon lord = first part of life
second trigon lord = second part of life
and
third trigon lord = third part of life.
Once the predominator has been determined
then proceed
to determine the OIKODESPOTES of the natal chart.

It survives in a summary of Balbilus and is also mentioned by Valens as a popular method along with decennials. The principle is the same as decennials, only the times are different.
You start with the predominator,
and then allot years as many as the minor recurrence years
of the planets in zodiacal order

(sun - 19,
moon - 25,
saturn - 30,
jupiter - 12,
mars - 15,
venus - 8
and
mercury - 20).

The difference between this and the 129 year method is that
if the stars should not be upon the degrees of their exaltations,
it will be necessary to
substract as many days as there are years, by sign, as many months.

One can further divide each time into 129 parts as many times as necessary.

the following useful advice is
provided by greybeard

HOUSES DO NOT RULE PLANETS.

PLANETS RULE SIGNS

and a sign ruled by a particular planet appears on the cusp of some house.

The planet that rules the sign on the cusp of a house is lord of that house, its ruler.

The ruler of a house has dominion over the affairs of the house
and of any planets found within the boundaries of the sign it rules.

Whether the ruler operates for good or evil depends on its conditioning
for which there are many measurements.

A planet in a house operates most strongly there because directly,
although its behavior is determined by its ruler, even though indirect.
Rather than "ruler"
we might say that the planet ruling the sign on a cusp "disposes" that house
and whatever it contains.

Houses are fixed in relation to Earth.
They are earth-bound, or mundane, and symbolize "surrounding circumstances".

"...SYZYGY...”

refers to

Full or New Moon
directly preceding the natal

BOUND lord of SYZYGY is NOT the DECAN Lord

The BOUNDS are a system of dividing each zodiacal sign into 5 unequal regions
The regions are called BOUNDS or TERMS.
Each of the five bounds of a sign is ruled by one of the five planets

i.e.
the non-Lights.

Egyptian Bounds - some variation in ancient literature
in which bounds were of different lengths or ruled by different planets.
For instance, check out the different table of bounds at Altair astrology.

However, the so-called EGYPTIAN BOUNDS are independently attested in many ancient sources.

Additionally, the EGYPTIAN BOUNDS have been found in early horoscopes recovered by archaeologists

Using Bounds
The bound ruler of a planet or point, such as the Ascendant
has an influence over the nature of that planet or point.
The bound is link between the two.

SIGNS as the houses of the planets
and the BOUNDS are comparable to their rooms.

Additionally, the bounds are key
to certain predictive techniques in Hellenistic and Persian astrology.
For instance
the bound ruler of the directed Ascendant
an important time lord

Every kind of honour
is divined from

the nature of attending stars

for SATURN brings about power

based on wealth and amassing of treasure

The images and the stars cause the beginning of matters
the houserulers cause the end of matters.

SATURN and Mars are always bad
and they are better ascending
only when exceptionally placed.

They are exceedingly bad for the respective image
when ascending without benefic testimony,

and

when they are rising and culminating with undistinguished nativities
they make destitutes, wicked, disabled, and those who are short-lived.
And I updated this particular calculator and it works separately also as:

Of the seven metals, Saturn rules lead
which has a very dull surface
and makes a thick, heavy sound when struck.
Lead is also the heaviest, the most stable
and the most inert metal
the traditional metal of tombs.

Lead poisoning was originally referred to as 'Saturnism'
because the physical ailments of ingesting small quantities of lead include
fatigue, depression and melancholia.
Lead collects in bone tissue
and is more prevalent in the bones of old people than those of the young.

Nick Kollerstrom in his book ASTROCHEMISTRY
explores the link between Saturn, lead and Saturnism
reminding us that the effects of lead poisoning
are to 'slow down' the mental processes of the mind.
Saturn also rules all ordinary country stones that have no glitter and shine.
It is said to rule the dross of all metals and the dust, ash and rubbish of everything.
It does however, have some rulership over diamonds
the hardest mineral, derived from crystallised carbon.

Indeed. All of these are related in some way.

I've always found it interesting that Saturn
tends to produce restrictions and pains

due to the lack of solar and lunar qualities it lacks.
It is the planet
that opposes the rulership of the Moon and the Sun, after all.

A lack of moisture and a lack of heat
makes the natives lack connection with their own emotions
and others' (Moon) while also a lack of will to act (Solar).
SATURN is cold
and
dry
and inimical to life

In nativities
malefics are better when they are post-ascending
for then they do not harm the stars and images that are ascending.
They are best when ascending and favorably placed
for then they bring good fortune.
Inoperative stars cause reversals and weakness.
It definitely is more devastating than Mars, which only sins in regards to having a lack of empathy.

Mars is burning and drying, malefic, masculine and nocturnal. Pyroeis makes those born under him red and white in complexion, tall, robust, gray-eyed, with thick hair, somewhat curly, having excess of hot and dry when morning rising, and red, of middle height, with small eyes, not much hair on the body, straight yellow hair, having excess of dry when evening rising, and in general, natural, grim, resourceful, passionate, drinking, turbulent, relentless, challenging and confident. Mars controls force, wars, robbery, screams, violence, the loss of property, whoring, banishment, exile, alienation from parents, captivity, corruption of women, abortions, sexual intercourse, the loss of good things, lies, vain hopes, violent theft, banditry, plundering, disputes between friends, wrath, fighting, verbal abuse, hatred, lawsuits, shouting, violent murder, slashing and bloodshed, attacks of fever, boils, burns, imprisonment, torture, courage, false oaths, wandering, decoration of clothing, excelling at villainy, those who work with fire and iron, artisans, masons, leadership, military service, high-ranking officers, soldiers, supremacists, hunting, wine, falling from heights and four-footed animals, poor vision, apoplexy and falling on the back, the muscular system, the urinary system, the lower gastrointestinal tract, weapons, iron, reddish colours and acid tastes. It is chronocrator over late adulthood up to the 56th year.

I'd say Saturn is more of a powerful influence than many other planets.
It rules time, reality. The cold, hard truth - as it's often said.
'....Saturn brings about power based on wealth and amassing of treasure...'

The Fifth House is also known as "...the Good Fortune..."
this place was considered to give signs for children.
When one of the water signs governs this place
it is said to be an indicator of fertility and abundance of children.

HOWEVER

The malefics were thought to be indicators of
the inability to have children especially in the case of SATURN.
In modern times, while this can still be true
Saturn has taken on the role of scientist
indicating that while the couple may still be naturally barren
they may still have children with the help of science.
This place also gives signs to the parent
as to what their relationship to their children will be like.
William Lilly wrote in "...Christian Astrology..."
that if Saturn, Mars or the South Node be in the 5th house
then the children will not be easily regulated
and are very averse to the parents.

Because the 5th is symbolic of the creative process
and at the biological level, children are the result.
On an emotional level, this is the house of our romantic lives
our playfulness
or recreation.
It is about having fun.
August when Sun is in the 5th sign every year
people commonly go to parks, fairgrounds, or on vacation.
After this comes labor day, Virgo
signifying that the party is over.
But it's not the worst place.

NEVERTHELESS

5th isn't the best placement for Saturn
because fun just isn't in Saturn's vocabulary
neither is speculation or gambling
so any risk taking
is likely to bring negative consequences.

Even with the best expression of Saturn
spontaneity is likely to be a problem.
Saturn functions best here by being
very conservative in these matters.
You are also likely to run into unreasonable opposition
from others who do not want you to show your talents
especially if you are gifted in the arts.
The key to overcoming these difficulties lies in being conscious
overcoming any agnoia of what you produce and its effects upon others.

If you have children
they are likely to be very serious in temperament
or few in number, possibly an only child.
It is also possible that
it is an indication that the first born is destined to greatness

Thinking in terms of the process starting with the 1st
the 5th represents our coming out of our shell
- the 4th -
to show ourselves.
and our investments of ourselves in others.

This can take a material form as well
in terms of the investments we make on stocks.
The post ascensional houses
succedent
represent a cycle of the flow of capital.
The second represents our having capital.
The 5th therefore, since it is the 90 degree outgoing square
represents a challenge to what we have
signifying our expendatures and spending habits.

That is why Jupiter is better than Saturn.
Unless he's inflating something horrible, then...well...
On that topic, Jup is in Aqua again, right?
Does it see (inflate) the incoming dreadful combo of Sun/Mars/Mercury?

GENERALISATION is tempting but unreliable
many considerations
including
RECEPTION which I have responded to on another thread,
apply

Reception by Domicile & Reception by Exaltation
are called "...Perfect Reception..."
and hold the most weight.

Receptions by triplicity, term or face are weaker.
technically speaking
reception may be by face alone
or term alone
but it would be a very weak reception

compared to the stronger ones
It's still a reception, just an IMPERFECT RECEPTION.
An imperfect reception isn't that noticeable.
It's there but it's relatively minor.
When the planet has at least two minor dignities that it's received in
THEN pay attention to it as a reception.

Some ancient traditional authors
gave them more weight when the planet is received in two minor dignities.
i.e.
a planet couldn't be received at all with just term, triplicity, or face
- it had to have at least two minor dignities
in order to even qualify as a reception.
Understanding what each of the dignities do
and
how they are different from each other
THEN it's clearer
that reception by anything other than Domicile and Exaltation
is WEAK
i.e.

common analogy is that no-one but the owner
or steward of the house
has the authority to invite anyone into that house
and allow anyone to use its resources.

So being a triplicity lord
and
being a bound lord
is not the same as being the Domicile lord.
NEVERTHELESS
A planet in its term has its nature reinforced
and
a planet in triplicity is supported.
The planet may not be the domicile lord
but it does have something to offer, even in that state.

study earliest available texts from the earliest to Lilly
and you'll see a subtle shift
in the way the minor dignities are interpreted.
Realisation of this subtlety adds to one's predictions. Instead of saying

'...Saturn in his own bounds is a little dignified...'
one can say
'....Saturn in his own bounds means that he will produce his own significations
while setting his own limits on these outcomes'

The analogies given by later astrologers
tend the emphasise the differing strengths of the dignities
but not the different functions.
Originally, Domicile lord seen as the steward of the house
Exaltation lord the owner who visits only occasionally
i.e.
it is a big deal when they are in residence
and
Bound lord is a servant attached to a particular room
like a chef or cook

The overall condition of the house
that is the building itself, by analogy
is found by its position from the ascendant and its aspects.
How well it is run, its relationship to its domicile lord
and that lord's condition.
Its occupants exact roles and manifestation is found via their bound lord.

Each planet works in the house it is in
WITH the Domicile lord hinting at
what end and purpose
and then
the Bound lord shows how it attempts to achieve that purpose.

Perfect Reception is by Sign, Exaltation
Triplicity AND Term
or
Triplicity AND Decan.
Reception is about "...allowing..."
A Planet that receives another Planet
is allowing that Planet to act.
When you come into my home (Sign/Exaltation)
you can eat all my food, drink all my beer
swim in my pool, shower.

a few significations of the Water-Pourer:
Hellenistic Astrology - Zodiac
The image of the Water-Pourer aka AQUARIUS is masculine, diurnal, solid, watery
human, servile, eloquent, semi-infertile, handsome, standing
and of the east wind.

It indicates inquiries, affairs, crafts, water and property.
Depending on the placement of the houseruler
men born under the influence of Aquarius are burdened, envious, lying,
occasionally generous because of the uncontrollable flow of the Water-Pourer,
craftsmen, public, mystical, youthful, delicate, with beautiful figure and eyes
smooth hair, dizzy, beautiful manners, white, working with hard materials,
troubled by athletic training, artisans, wealthy, malicious
haters of their own families, incorrigible
making living by waterside places, betrayers of reputation and truth,
accusers, haters of mankind, godless and uncontrollable.
Domicile of Saturn, it controls the lower legs, the skeletal system,
the lymphatic system and the immune system.

The first 7° belong to Mercury - mastery, lovers of wisdom
The next 6° belong to Venus - friendships with great women
The next 7° belong to Jupiter - notable, some are winners of games
The next 5° belong to Mars - lawsuits, injuries, some die violent deaths
The final 5° belong to Saturn - education, grief in youth

Shoulders, Left Arm and Cloak - Saturn and Mercury
Thighs - Mercury and moderately Saturn
Water - Saturn and moderately Jupiter

Such, then, are the observations of the effects of the stars as made by our predecessors.

highlights Greek astrologers used metaphor
to convey the idea of the functions of the various planets
based on the Greeks being a seafaring nation
who two thousand years ago navigated the oceans
using sailing ships

hence

THE HELLENISTIC NAUTICAL METAPHOR

The ship itself
is
the native’s life
as represented by the Predominator

The first and second Trigon Lords
aka Triplicity Lords of the Predominator
are the Winds that carry the ship to its destiny.

The third Trigon aka Triplicity Lord
symbolizes the oars that move the ship.

Oikodespotes aka Domicile Master of the chart
is the ship owner
and
sets the agenda or destiny for the native
BUT
under the restrictions set by the bound ruler of the Predominator.

Kurios aka Lord of the nativity is the Captain of the ship
aka Executor
aka the one responsible
to bring the ship
to the destination set by Oikodespotes aka Domicile Master.

The Ascendant sign is the “...helm...” of the ship
and represents the physical life.

Domicile Lord of the Ascendant is the Helmsman
or the First Officer of the ship.

Lot of Fortune
represents everything that befalls the native
that is not of his or her own doing.

Domicile Lord of the Lot of Fortune
represents the man on the prow of the ship
aka Second Officer
who is on the look out for things/events
that are going to befall the native.

Clearly crucial that Lord of the Lot of Fortune
be able to communicate with the Domicile Master
and
the Ascendant/Helmsman
Lord of the nativity aka Kurios

HOW SATURN IS AFFECTED BY SECT IN ASTROLOGY

SATURN SOLE DOMICILE RULER OF AQUARIUS IS A DIURNAL PLANET

BRIEF overview of the concept of sect in astrology
which is
the difference between day charts
and night charts.

Sect is a fundamental concept used in Hellenistic astrology
only been recovered over the past THIRTY years
through translations of ancient texts.
this talk gives a broad introduction to sect
first by establishing
how pervasive the concept is in ancient astrology
and then
to demonstrate how it works in practice through chart examples

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XfPLTQuB9M

In a diurnal chart
the Sun is the sect light AKA the leader of the sect
Jupiter and Saturn are planets of the Dirunal Sect.

If Saturn is above the horizon Diurnally - Saturn is happy

BUT
If below the horizon in the diurnal chart

Saturn is still of the diurnal sect
— still of the sect in favour
— but is not going to be as happy
as when Saturn is above horizon in diurnal chart

saturn is the furthest traditional planet from the sun.

.....the sun rules leo.

saturn rules aquarius because it's furthest from the sun,
and
the coldest planet.
aquarius is rigid, cold, dogmatic, impersonal
- that seems to fit saturnian energy pretty well.

saturn diametrically opposes the sun,
which also makes sense here.
that's the actual why in trad astrology.

Oh, and I really think that Aquarius fits Saturn quite well.
This whole "...hard reality..." theme it has going

really fits with the absolute logic, coldness and aloofness of Aquarius.

Saturn is a very scientific, objective, cautious planet to me.

Traditionally

Saturn is cooling and moderately drying, malefic, masculine and diurnal. Phainon makes those born under him dark-skinned, robust, black-haired, curly-haired, hairy-chested, and with eyes of moderate size, middling stature, having excess of cold and moist when morning rising, and dark, slender, small, straight-haired, with little bodily hair, rather graceful, black-eyed, having excess of cold and dry when evening rising, and in general, annoying, concealing, avaricious, ignorant, consistent, reserved, petty, malicious, having many anxieties, throwing themselves down, fond of solitude, deceitful, downcast, hypocritical, squalid, clothed in black, deviant, importunate, sullen and miserable. Saturn controls depressions and sluggishness, obstacles in business, interminable lawsuits, subversion of action, secrets, restraints, imprisonment, grief, accusations, tears, being orphaned, captivity, haunting, farmers, gardeners, workers of property, managers, seafaring and waterside trades, tax collectors, the elders, violent action, guardianship, great reputation, notable ranks, lands, administration of that which belongs to others, fathership of the children of others, bachelors, widows, childlessness, violent deaths by water, strangulation, dysentery, falling on the face, injuries and lower respiratory infections, the skeletal system, the lymphatic system and the immune system, building materials like wood and stone, lead, dark colours and astringent tastes. It chronocrator over late old age up to death.

The Minor Years of the Planets
are consistently given in many different texts.
One source is
at the end of Book III
of the Anthology by Valens

free download.

Below are the Minor Years of each planet

  • SATURN – 30
  • Jupiter – 12
  • Mars – 15
  • Sun – 19
  • Venus – 8
  • Mercury – 20
  • Moon – 25
In various sections of the Anthology
especially Book VII
Valens uses the years of the planets for prediction.
He combines the minor years of planets that are in configurations.

Valens also
combines minor years of planets with those of their ruler.

The basic idea is that
a planet’s effects are likely to manifest
or ripen
near to the number of years of the planet.
Multiples of the years are also used.
For instance, Venus ripens every 8 years
so at age 16, 24, 32, and 40 she may also come into focus.

Note that the native’s 16th year is actually when he/she is 15
so the indication can also be
for the year leading up to that age.

Combining Years

Combinations include summing the Minor Years of two planets.
We can sum the Minor Years of a planet and its ruler
for activation of the planet in the sign.

For instance, age 27 may be an activation of
the Sun in Taurus - Sun 19 plus Venus 8.

Additionally, to time out the ripening of configurations
we combine the years of the planets involved.
For instance, age 27 may see the activation of
a Jupiter - 12 - square Mars - 15 - configuration in the chart.
