Need help please

It's 1:50 am. Since 1:15 a horrible, insidious tone woke me up out of sleep and hasn't gone away. I live in a basement apartment and it's loudest in my bedroom, but I can hear it everywhere. I've tried to find the source but cannot. I thought maybe it's mechanical, electrical, something, but can't figure it out and it's driving me nuts.
I put in ear plugs that don't really help much, and even my cat knows there's something very not right.
Any ideas?

Maybe an animal?

Just put on headphones and turn the music really loud. I do it all the time to block out noise.

Yes, I've sent word out.
Just discovered something, however. Used the sink and the sound wavered so now I'm sure it's in the plumbing.
Will figure it out.
So bizarre!
