Abby, I think you have asked THE correct question, and if I were a young mother I also no doubt would be very concerned. While I chose not to have children, I am still VERY concerned for our descendants.
Yes, toxins are saturating our soil, water, and air. We destroy trees, ecosystems, and other species with abandon as if it has no effect on us.
Humans as a species have crowded out all the others and do not seem to recognize as a whole the dangers of this. The reality that we are interdependent with nature doesn't seem to enter the public awareness at all. The lack of wisdom with those in positions of power is breathtaking.
That all said, I feel there is a lot of good news.
Firstly there are MILLIONS of people who know better around the world and have devoted their lives to protecting our biosphere and all beings within it.
Mass communications as they exist today is basically guaranteeing that the information to educate is readily available. Many governments have recognized the problems and are enacting heroic measures to change their behaviors. I don't know where you live but the tragedy of the USA is that this current administration is going in the polar opposite of where we need to be, but as the Americans are one stubborn lot, sometimes it takes extremes to wake them up. And it appears they are indeed waking up.
And the best news, I feel, is that there is this very nagging feeling that something is not right amongst most people. Rich or poor, few are content. And I think this points to some innate wisdom that is lying dormant in most, that we can do far better.
We have all the knowledge we need to take the global ship in the direction that will ensure that myriad generations into the future will actually have healthy, abundant, meaningful lives - here on our precious earth, with our exceptional diversity of species and cultures.
The question remains whether we are mature enough to take full responsibility individually and collectively to rein in what appear to be our desperate yet very destructive desires (and other impulses).
History has shown that it certainly is very possible with individuals.
Collectively it remains to be seen.
Keep the dialogue going, and as it's been said so well, be the change you want to see. You can teach your children to embody the qualities and knowledge to protect nature. Show them by your example. Include your extended family, friends, neighbors, schools, businesses, local and national governments.
WE are the ones who have to do it. No one else will. That is fact.
Best wishes!
Cheers.
