A little known and topically interesting fact about turtles.

I found this in wikipedia on the page for 'Turtle'.

"Researchers have recently discovered a turtle’s organs do not gradually break down or become less efficient over time, unlike most other animals. It was found that the liver, lungs, and kidneys of a centenarian turtle are virtually indistinguishable from those of its immature counterpart. This has inspired genetic researchers to begin examining the turtle genome for longevity genes."

...I find this to be so wondrous and don't understand why I've never heard mention of this before. The last time I studied anything about biology was in High School in the 1960s. I don't recall any mention of anything like this at all in nature. Is this a relatively new observation and finding?
Surely it is a study of first rate merit.
