For an example
let's use THE NAUTICAL METAPHOR - Robert Schmidt

Project Hindsight http://www.projecthindsight.com/archives/index.html

Schmidt says Greek astrologers used metaphor
to convey the idea of the functions of the various planets
based on the Greeks being a seafaring nation
who two thousand years ago navigated the oceans
using sailing ships
hence
THE HELLENISTIC NAUTICAL METAPHOR

The ship itself
is
the native’s life
as represented by the Predominator

The first and second Trigon Lords
aka Triplicity Lords of the Predominator
are the Winds that carry the ship to its destiny.

The third Trigon aka Triplicity Lord
symbolizes the oars that move the ship.

Oikodespotes aka Domicile Master of the chart
is the ship owner
and
sets the agenda or destiny for the native
BUT
under the restrictions set by the bound ruler of the Predominator.

Kurios aka Lord of the nativity is the Captain of the ship
aka Executor
aka the one responsible
to bring the ship
to the destination set by Oikodespotes aka Domicile Master.

The Ascendant sign is the “...helm...” of the ship
and represents the physical life.

Domicile Lord of the Ascendant is the Helmsman
or the First Officer of the ship.

Lot of Fortune
represents everything that befalls the native
that is not of his or her own doing.

Domicile Lord of the Lot of Fortune
represents the man on the prow of the ship
aka Second Officer
who is on the look out for things/events
that are going to befall the native.

Clearly it is crucial that the Lord of the Lot of Fortune
be able to communicate with the Domicile Master
and
the Ascendant/Helmsman
Lord of the nativity aka Kurios

Valens was a follower of the sol invictus belief and philosophy in the later Roman Empire times; others gave more attention to mercury as connected with the mind, especially those astrologers influenced by hermetics (eg Manilius)

Hellenistic Astrology which you are discussing here is the FOUNDATION of 'modern astrology' or the western astrology we use today.

But while we retain the 12 houses, 12 signs format, we've updated & nuanced the planets, the houses and rely on transits, solar returns, progressions as opposed to the anicent methods of prediction.

Hellenistic Astrology is the basis of Western or Modern Astrology.

We NOW accept that the :sun: rules the heart, without which one has no life.
It rules the 5th house of creation which includes children.
Therefore, :sun: rules vitality & the most important planet in astrology.

We accept that :mercury: rules the mind, the 3rd house ruling over :gemini: & news, chatter, thinking, short journeys.

:aries rules the brain/head....they are 'head-strong', brave, rule the 1st house as the boldly 'make their entrance' to the world.

I have studied astrology for a very long time & never come across one person who uses Hellenistic Astrology techniques. I've listened to a couple o podcasts with Chris Brennan & others I can't remember regarding

Zodiacal Releasing

Annual Profections

Lots

VERY interesting but not anymore accurate or 'better' than the modern techniques of prediction (which I mentioned above).

Vettius Valens was a genius, no doubt about that. A sublime astrologer for his time. And other great astrologers have built upon his work just as Valens built on others. Our Western astrology today would not exist without the founders, of which he is a very valuable member.

At the same time, I only study modern astrologers with their in-depth analyis. I mean, Liz Greene wrote an entire book on one sign, that's how much more precise & accurate our understanding of planets have become.

I learn something new about astrology all the time, more details about a planet or a sign or transit. We are ever evolving.

I'm not taking away what you are doing here. Just want the newbies to understand that we've rightly classified the different signs to different parts of the body which differ from the ancient times of Valens.

Just a quick refresher here.

:aries: rules the head/brain & the 1st house.

:taurus: rules the throat, the tonsils. 2nd h

:gemini: rules the lungs, hands, 3rd h

etc etc etc

Western astrology goes further into sub-sections like the pituary gland & the thyroid. They don't rely on large 'time frames' but can apply a transit to one day now.

Hellenistic astrology also uses WHOLE SIGNS while a huge percentage of modern day astrologers use PLACIDUS SIGN ASTROLOGY.

I've heard that Vedic astrology is more akin to Hellenistic astrology, don't know if that's true but Western or modern astrology is very different from the ancient astrology Valens studied.

Vedic astrology was heavily influenced by Hellenistic astrology during the first 4 centuries AD, although it also retained most of its own ancient tradition.

Thank you Dr. Farr for the confirmation.

Well-known member
Valens was a follower of the sol invictus belief
and philosophy in the later Roman Empire times;
others gave more attention to mercury as connected with the mind,
especially those astrologers influenced by hermetics (eg Manilius)

"...Vettius Valens' Anthologiae is the longest extant astrological work from antiquity.
It is unique in several respects:
the author was a practicing astrologer
the work includes more than 100 authentic horoscopes of Valens' clients or associates
including his own, which is used as an example many times throughout the work
the work also includes tables and the description of algorithms used by astrologers and mathematicians...” Mark T Riley

Clearly, Mark T Riley

is of the opinion that
Valens is unique in being a practicing astrologer whose work is the longest extant astrological work from antiquity
Valens perspective being that of a practicing astrologer meant
that Valens was eager to preserve everything he possibly could
intact
for the benefit of future astrologers. Valens simply compiled without altering what he compiled.

Certainly Valens commented on the various astrological techniques
but crucially, did not alter any.
That fact taken in tandem with Valen's work being '...the longest extant astrological work from antiquity...'
understandably obviously makes Valens an important figure.
Crucially, Valens utilised not only his own horoscope
but also those of more than a 100 authentic horoscopes of his own clients.

"...Well over 90% of everything that was ever written on the subject is lost
so debating what Greek astrologers did is probably an exercise in futility.
It is important to realize that Valens is probably 300+ years removed from the founders
he is fond of quoting
At this point though I have more faith in someone who knows Greek
hashing out the texts than those who don't.
That would be James Holden and Robert Schmidt..."

Curtis Manwaring the Lost Horoscope X-files

'...Read the whole of Valens and you'll find a treasure trove of astrological techniques
it is commonly known that Valens was indeed a '...working-class astrologer...'

often prefacing statements with phrases such as:
"...I wandered throughout Egypt in search of knowledge
until someone taught me this technique
and I have found it to work beautifully..."
"...I have found this lot to be very mystical and important..."
i.e.
Valens speaks from his own personal experience as a working astrologer..."'
sourced from Kenneth Johnson - an astrologer with at least forty years experience

Valens CHRONICLED faithfully the work of his astrological predecessors
WITHOUT ALTERATION
and
WITHOUT IMPOSING his opinions
on the ideas of ancient predecessors.
And clearly
Valens, having faithfully chronicled details of techniques which
without Valens chronicling of them
would have been consigned to oblivion
Valens THEN tested the techniques for himself
BECAUSE VALENS WAS A WORKING PRACTICING ASTROLOGER
i.e.
Valens work is not only a valuable chronicle of ancient astrological techniques
but also an interesting insight regarding Valens own personal testing of those techniques
SO Valens chronicled AS WELL AS tested techniques
which in his time were already considered '...Ancient...'
and in doing so
provides more than a hundred example horoscopes
for astrologers following him to glean information from.

FURTHERMORE
Valens work is proven reliable in historical terms
because
Valens horoscopes have been useful in enabling scholars to date many historical events
with more certainty
thus
Valens THE ANTHOLOGY natal charts are proven valuable research material
for historians
i.e.
Historians have used Valens authentic astrological charts
to fine-tune the dating of known historical events
