Drug/Alcohol Addiction

Moon is opposite Chiron, so internal emotional pain regarding the home or childhood is life-long (chiron is not in the 4th but very close to the IC and Moon rules the 4th traditionally). Mars is in very close trine to Jupiter/Uranus, making it very easy to overdo intoxicants. Transiting Neptune is semi-square Neptune, triggering the urge, plus natal Moon is square Uranus/Jupiter so he is always tempted to use intoxicants as an emotional crutch. Saturn opposite Mars close saps his energy and will to resist. Lately Transiting Uranus has been opposite the Sun, creating more events to trigger the desire. This is a life-long problem that will continually be triggered by some transit somewhere.

BTW - he has a powerful Yod of Moon quincunx Pluto and Mars, with Chiron at the midpoint. This is a major karmic lesson for him. He's going to have to learn to deal with emotional pain in other ways other than drugs/alcohol or physical activity (including violence).

Well that's unfortunate that it will be always be a temptation. He doesn't seem to think it's too big of a problem though.

He's good at meditating and writing is his passion. Would those be good outlets?

It doesn't appear to be a physical addiction or problem, but an emotional one as I indicated. He may not think it is a problem but apparently you did or you wouldn't have asked.

He needs a physical outlet of some sort too, like getting outside to nature, doing some hiking or something. With moon square Uranus he'll be very fidgety while at the same time Mars opp Saturn can make him lazy or indecisive physically. He should find an activity he can do outside. The mediation and writing will help dealing with an emotional pain, the physical activity will help him stay away from drugs/alcohol and will actually help in the meditation later. The physical activity is not to be a substitute of dealing with the emotional problem however, which is what I meant earlier. Don't replace one crutch with another. Some people for example might take up a contact sport, but all they do is transfer their anger from one person to another (the opponent in the sport). It does nothing to address the problem. A solo activity like hiking in nature can help focus the mind.
