Whatever sign is in said house has a planetary ruler. Said planetary ruler will be in one of the 11 other houses. Position, house placement and condition will affect first house related topics.
So, if you like "modern" astrology, you could use Neptune, though I personally use traditional ruler Jupiter. Its up to you, Moonrider.

When no planet in Asc then you have look where and how your asc lord is.
For example my Asc lord Venus is in 2nd house Gemini.
I'm more like Gemini than a Taurus.

That domicile Moon has a great effect on your asc an I'd say it was asc lord via rulership of Mercury. Cancer energy (Domicile) outweighs Gemini.
