Horizons in the Birth Chart and the 12th House (I'm a bit confused)?

I just read a wonderful article about the 4th house as I've always wondered about the IC. The article explains the horizons as such:
"The Ascendant symbolized sunrise and beginnings; the Midheaven, the Sun's noontime zenith and one's public success; the Descendant evoked sunset, the descent and dissolving of the solar self. The angle marking the 4th house, the IC, recalled midnight, a time when the Sun god lay hidden between death and new life."

My question is this. If the 12th house is considered to be where the sun would next go after sunrise and continue to proceed in a clockwise direction, then why is the 12th house considered "the dark den of sorrow", or house of shadows? Should it not be the brightest house in the chart, or possibly the 10th?
I understand that it's the last house of the zodiac, but in terms of horizons and the sun's position this does not make sense to me. Could someone explain, or just say how you think of it. Thanks.
