Skyscript has a lot of educational articles for people wanting to learn traditional western astrology. There are also a lot of educational articles on this site (see the education board and moderator Tim Wilson's quick primer on learning astrology.) The Astrodienst website www.astro.com also has many good articles to walk you through the basics of planets, signs, houses, and aspects.

If you don't mind buying a book, a great one for beginners is Steven Forrest, The Inner Sky.

I am currently taking a program that I do by distance education. It has been excellent so far. The teacher takes an in-depth approach to astrology with an emphasis on learning the reasons why the various representations are used instead of by way of memorization. Supposedly it takes four years and I can see if you do it part time that it would take that long. I think this process is better than reading books because it forces you to think which is more likely to bring about understanding than by just reading about it. And if you like the teacher's approach, it probably is better to learn from one source as I think it can be confusing to flit around to different teachers. There are so many conflicting ideas.

Astrology requires us to be comfortable around conflicting ideas, and to make up our own minds about them, after thought and study.

Thanks Waybread! Yes I would agree. And its an attractive aspect to astrology that I appreciate. I do find though that I am maybe too amateur at this point to take it all in and sift through it to decide what I find to be more helpful. It is pretty daunting to not just try to understand differing viewpoints within one branch of astrology but then when you consider vedic, traditional, modern, chinese, sidereal etc. it can be slightly overwhelming. I do love this forum though as it offers a chance to hear from so many perspectives and that is allowing me to explore more if I want to.

Astrology is a good field for people intrigued by complex systems. Maybe less so for linear thinkers. But it does take time. I don't think it can be mastered without a few years of study, and most of us need more time than that.

Thanks for the tip! I've placed more weight upon the methods used by astrologers that I have personally found to be perceptive. It may be a case of the astrologer and not the school of thought but I had a reading done by a Morin leaning astrologer and I found that she put too much emphasis on the ascendant. I frankly think she missed me entirely.

The astrologer that has seen me the best and really cut through the B.S. as it were was an astrologer that said she studied a 3 dimensional type of astrology. I never found out what it was but it was due to that reading that I am studying it for myself today. It so impressed me that I decided I wanted to learn. Do you know how I can learn this type of astrology? She said that the chart was not in a single plane, thats what the 3D means.

This might have been Magi astrology. But you can input its parallels and contra-parallels into ordinary astrology, and some of its claims seem sensationalized.

I will look into that, thank you. Im not sure if this is the same as what she was studying. She said that not anyone could study it, you had to be invited. Im not sure if this was true or if she said this to make it seem more legitimate. But honestly it was the most insightful reading I have ever had.
