Asteroid 2005 YU55 To Narrowly Miss Earth (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

An asteroid a quarter-mile-wide will, astronomically speaking, narrowly miss Earth next week.

And while it is the closest an asteroid this size has come to the home planet since 1976, there's no need to call Bruce Willis ... yet.

"There is no chance that this object will collide with the Earth or moon," Don Yeomans, the manager of NASA's Near Earth Object Program office, told Reuters.

But that doesn't mean the asteroid -- named 2005 YU55 -- won't be a threat to earth in the future.

Lance Benner, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a video from NASA (available below) that scientists haven't been able to reliably compute the asteroid's path beyond a couple of hundred years from now.

At its closest point, the space rock will be about 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers) away, which is 0.85 the distance between the moon and the Earth. NASA says that the asteroid will reach this point at 6:28 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

The sky generally doesn't look all that unfriendly at the time. I wonder whether this asteroid will have any unusual effects on US elections that will be taking place that day.

To put things in perspective, this "near miss" isn't so near. The asteroid will pass, at the closest, 201,700 miles from the surface of Earth. The Earth is just under 8,000 miles in diameter. So, the asteroid will get as close as about 25 Earth-widths and no closer. There are tons of objects that cross Earth's orbit all the time. We only really need to worry about the ones that will be there at the same time the Earth is (which could be a surprise at any moment).

Your title rather overstates matters, but in a chart set for New York City, the Moon rules the second mundane house. This represents the financial industry of the USA (Wall Street). The Moon is afflicted by a strong Saturn indicating that the financial sector will take a hit.

The 11th house represents elections. It is ruled by a malefic Mars in the 3rd house. The elections will not be favorable for the current political establishment. However, this is an off year election so should not shake things up too much.

A strong Mercury conjunct Venus in the 7th rules the first house of the people. The situation of the average citizens should improve.

President Obama is represented by the 10th house, Pisces. Jupiter the planetary significator is in the 12th. That is not a good place, but Jupiter is in mutual reception with Venus in the 7th house. Obama will have a little strength in the future.

Astrology is predictive so do not expect these things to happen on the 8th. That is not the way astrology works. These things will come about in the months ahead.

Whole sign houses used.
