Should we not plan the trip for July 4th?

The trip is the 3rd (unless it is overseas, which you don't mention), with North Node there, which would bode well.
But ruler of the 3rd is mercury, retrograde, which says a change of plan/route.
While mercury appears to approach a trine to Saturn, it actually turns direct before completing the aspect.
Neptune on ascendent shows confusion and moon void of course says nothing will happen.
Your comments about the composite charts are interesting.
A composite represents the combined energy of two entities, in this case two persons. It represents the energy of the relationship itself.
Each point is the combination of the two planets in the natals charts.
So these are in effect energy points, which a transit can trigger.
So in a theoretical sense, yes, the transits touching points in the composite can reflect the effect the transit is having on the relationship.
However, you should take a look at the natals to see what is happening.
For example, your natal mercury is being squared by transiting mars, you find yourself losing your temper and being irritated. But how does that mercury relate to the composite? It might be that your combined Mercurys will fall in a position that is not receiving the mars transit in a negative way.
Which means that you are feeling nervous but it doesn't show up in the relationship.
Can the reverse situation occur? For example, you have a natal mercury that is receiving a positive trine from transiting mars. But the mercury midpoint in the composite shows no contact or shows a negative contact.
So you have to remember to refer back to the natals.
You can also look at the progressed composite, which will show the current evolution of the relationship. And apply transits.
Just as each individual natal progresses as we go through life, so does the relationship change, and progress. So you might have a current Venus/saturn hard aspect in the progressed composite that shows a difficult period between you, which could also be triggered by a transiting planet. But this energy will eventually pass, just as the progressed natal moves forward and the energy changes.
We are not static, we are energy in movement and evolution, and this is reflected in several ways astrologically.
Basically, what you are doing is finding a short cut summary, that can give you a hint, but it doesn't give you all of the picture.
