moon as triplicity ruler for water rather than mars?

Solarfire is pretty funky on dignities, and from what people have said, it's a real PITA to edit the dignities pages in SF. I have an old copy somewhere, but I don't have it installed on my computer.

If it's using Ptolemaic dignities (does it say that much?) you're right, Pisces triplicity is Mars and Mars, day and night. Even in Dorothean triplicities it's Venus for day, Mars for night, and Moon for participating.

It's possible, I suppose that there's a tick mark somewhere (or something that wants editing) to use or not use the participating ruler. Or it's a bug.

Minderwiz over at AT wrote an article on editing SF dignities, find it here: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=231561&highlight=solar+fire

Ah I see. I'll have to try and re-edit mine. It's a really old version.

Must be stuck on Ptolemy who used Venus (day) Moon (night) for water/earth triplicity.. While Mars is both day/night for water according to Lily.

I think I may stick with Ptolemy's method

The OP is gone-- but this article may be of interest:

http://www.skyscript.co.uk/triplicities.html

Houlding says that the Hellenistic astrologers gave 3 triplicity rulers each, for day and night charts. The moon does show up as one of the triplicity rulers of the water signs in this scheme.

Further, she notes that some of the ruler assignments were not based on an affinity between planets and elements or day/night, but rather to moderate the excessive effects of the malefics. Hot dry Mars is moderated at night, just as cold Saturn is moderated during the sunlight hours.

Presumably, if you're going to have Mars somewhere in a chart, it's better to have him in a sign like Pisces that dampens his excessive heat and dryness.

That may not save you from wrestling with the essdig.alm pages, though.

Minderwiz says: Solar Fire's default is a version of Ptolemy's dignities derived from the Ashmand translation of Tetrabiblios which was published in 1822. It's of questionable validity in some of its translation from Latin and very questionable in its translation from Greek. There are later and better translations that show that Lilly's translation in 1647 is actually nearer the mark.

Or maybe try Morinus, as you can change it to a table (that's correct, you don't need to make it yourself) in a couple of mouse-clicks.
