Geshe Ngawang Phende will speak on "The Antidote to Self-cherishing".

A self-cherishing or selfish attitude is extremely harmful
to both ourselves and also those around us

When we have this attitude, we become very narrow-minded
and easily come under the influence of other negative emotions
such as anger, jealousy, desire and so forth.
This causes our minds to become disturbed
and also causes us to act in ways that disturb the minds of others.
In this class, we will look at how to deal with this mind
and reduce it through relying on suitable antidotes.

"....Foolish, selfish people are always thinking of themselves

and the result is always negative.

Wise persons think of others, helping them as much as they can,

and the result is happiness....!!! "

The reason you are wandering in samsara
~ Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
https://justdharma.com/s/l98yo

Even when you find yourself in the best of situations
you never feel it is enough.
You always want more.
You give little thought to others wishes and desires
and only want favorable circumstances for yourself.
If you do the slightest favor for someone
you feel you have done something quite extraordinary.
That you are so preoccupied with your own happiness and welfare
and neglect the welfare and happiness of others
is the reason you are wandering in samsara

– Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
from the book "The Heart of Compassion:
The Thirty-seven Verses on the Practice of a Bodhisattva"
ISBN: 978-1590304570

Re: Virtue of being self-absorbed?

“Throughout my reign I will never rule you as a King.
I will protect you as a parent, care for you as a brother
and serve you as a son. I shall give you everything
and keep nothing; I shall live such a life as a good human being
that you may find it worthy to serve as an example for your children;
I have no personal goals other than to fulfill your hopes and aspirations.
I shall always serve you, day and night, in the spirit of kindness, justice and equality”
- His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Coronation, November 20080

Seriously.

It's better than being selflessly-absorbed.
I think it's pretty self-explanatory what self-absorbed is, and it's pointless being semantical about it, because the definition of it is implied to be negative. Create your own word to explain what you mean.

Loving oneself is not the same as self-absorbed. Self-absorbed just means someone who thinks too much about their own needs that they don't even have the time to care about anyone else (it also implies lack because if you're focusing on your own needs too much, it means you perpetually feel you don't have enough of something).

Self-love means that you have tended to your needs to the point of abundance where you feel you can share this love with others.

Exactly

If you're overly concerned with yourself
including your own feelings and thoughts
you're self-absorbed
Self-absorbed people don't think much about how others are feeling
