Which planet represents the ego in Vedic astrology?

I recently read an article in which a Vedic astrologer said that Venus was the planet that represented the ego, and that a person with a very strong Venus could be very egoistic.

I am curious to hear other Vedic astrologers view on this.

Not really.Ego of a person is something which relates to his/her individuality.Krushana Ashtakvarga System clearly tells you to ascertain such small small things for a person.
Just a hint for you, if there are more than one planet situated in the third house of a chart, the native might be egoistic, adamant and over confident. There are several other factors which i am not depicting here.Try this indicator for some charts if you can.

Any planet in it's bhin-ashtakvarga or ashtak division always donate a bindu or point to 11th house in it. First house is 11th house for third house and any plant situated in 3rd house will always give a bindu/point to lagna house. As such, if there are more planets in 3rd house ,there will be more points in first house. As you know, more points in lagna makes a person stubborn, adamant and egoistic...

Same can be determined if more planets are in 5th or 9th house in natal chart.

Thanks for the pointers you shared .Do you mean to say more planets in 5th or 9th will also make people egoistic

No, more planets in these houses will make a person more courageous and hard worker. This is different than being egoistic.

We call it perception versus reality.

Afflicted venus if associated with appropriate houses can indicate vanity, which is different from ego.

Ego is essential for worldly existence and not necessarily bad, rather useful and related with sanity! Ego functions get affected in those that are clinically insane (psychotics).

Egotism, on the other hand is bad and repulsive. Unfortunately, in common parlance folks usually confuse ego with egotism...!

In Vedic Astrology ego it is bad and it is represented by Venus. Remember I said amongst the asuras, Venus holds the top rank unlike in the devas, the top ranks are held by the Sun and Moon and not Jupiter.
Venus can be very egoistic. In the chart, if Venus is strong, the person makes a lot his decisions not through God but through his ego but whether Venus is 12th or 1st or 2nd from the Sun, the Sun's influence is often felt, and since Venus number is 6 which is an expansion of 1 which is the number from the Sun, it shows Venus gets her powers from the Sun actually (the Goddesses in Vedic all get the combined powers of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma).

You must have wondered what celebrities such as musicians, actors, artists, and dancers have special in their chart. It is Venus or Shukra in Sanskrit. Venus is planet you would love to be at right place in your kundli. It is all about material pleasure, love, romance, marriage, and friendship. Beauty, music, dance, drama is Venus. Anything related to luxury such as jewelry, expensive cars, beautiful home is Venus. Venus means opulence.

Venus is the brightest planet in astrology. Venus is a feminine planet considered to be the Goddess of all worldly comforts and chief governer of marriage in men’s chart. Men and women ruled by Venus are noticeably kind and social. When afflicted, Venus produces unsatisfactory domestic conditions, anxiety in love, and difficulty with friends of through finances. Venus rules the vehicles.

Some say that venus tempts; mars commits the crime

The missing line is perhaps: when jupiter and/or sun are not overseeing mercury...?

{Recently on a S.M. platform, folks were arguing about venus=material, jupiter = spiritual and moral, etc. Others disagreed and claimed that sun is the spiritual one and a few even said so about other planets etc. My sense was that the discussants were forgetting that while the planetary devas (heuristic symbols in astrology!) have been attributed with certain characteristics, virtues and faults etc., human beings (we all) are the sum-total resultants of all planets etc in our charts and express/project/perform according to the planetary make-up in our charts and few if any individuals respond to and perform in tune with any given planet etc in our charts. Sometimes it may seem that a strong planet is significant, but we forget that that naturally makes other planet or planets as weak or inexpressive, relatively speaking? In the spectrum of our humanness, these represent the light and dark bands which make each of us individuals and kind of unique in that sense, lumps and all...!}

In Vedic astrology, Ego is termed bad.

'Ego' cannot be different in English Language and Vedic astrology.
'Ego' is a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance.

Without Ego we cannot survive. An Ego can be inflated, deflated or humbled.
The truest spiritual seekers were able to humble their Ego.

Vedic astrology teachings surely meant to say that much Ego is an unwanted thing and is bad.

Rishi,

Your google-quote also mentions that:
"the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity."

Egotism (Hitler is often given as an extreme example and so also some modern leaders ;-) ] display this exaggerated trait! Most folks tend to mean some degree of egotism when they use the term *ego*. Just not to complicate this, there are also egoism and narcissism which have specific meanings and tend to be even more pathological...! These are not degrees of ego but distinctly different terms and states of mind and personality.

It is neither semantics, nor vedic vs english (in fact ego is a term which is not even vedic, sanskrit or hindi, jyotish, astrological etc). Sadly, something gets seriously (and unintentionally perhaps...?) lost in the translation!

Ego-integrity is indeed essential for staying in touch with reality (worldly, social, how we interact with and perceive others, etc. The ABSOLUTE REALITY presumably quite beyond Ego and only available to the emancipated, realized but RARE individuals -- the TRUE Param Gyanis :)

Anyways, that is how it appears to be...!

Though you continue to show up in this cyber-form with the *banned* label, Pandit ji, Shukra (Bhrigu) was not a goddess but a teacher of perhaps a different kind...?

Even Jupiter had to send his OWN son to Bhrigu to learn about sanjeevani? Immortality?? You all I am sure know the rest of that fable?

Fables though educational, SADLY fall in wrong hands and that is how superstitions enter and victimize the nativities and their advisors...?
