Generational Theory & Outer Planets

I have been interested in the outer planets in Astrology, sometimes called the Generational planets, as they correspond to Generational theory. Uranus, Neptune, Pluto are these planets and my primary focus at the moment is on Pluto.

Generational Theory (by Strauss and Howe):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strauss–Howe_generational_theory#Timing_of_generations_and_turnings

I have in bold the sign Pluto occupied the longest in each time period.

Greatest Generation 1901–1924:
Pluto in Gemini
Pluto in Cancer

Brought transformations in the field of communications through telephones, newspapers, photography, films, and telepathy.

Silent Generation 1925–1942:
Pluto in Cancer
Pluto in Leo

Saw transformations in loyalties and the general public from world war to the underworld life of the twenties through the depression and to a second world war. It stimulates the subconscious, psychism, instincts, emotional tenacity, and protectiveness.

Baby Boomers 1943–1960:
Pluto in Leo
Pluto in Virgo

Transformations in leadership, sports, and the entertainment industries. This generation tends to have intense will, confidence, power, pride, creativity, and dramatic ability.

Generation X 1961–1981:
Pluto in Virgo
Pluto in Libra

Transformations in law, diplomacy, marriage, music, and the arts. This generation can die and be reborn in relationships with intense desires for justice, balance, and harmony.

Millennials 1982–2004:
Pluto in Libra
Pluto in Scorpio
Pluto in Sagittarius

Stimulating occultism, transformations in sexuality, mysticism, and violence from personal murders to the nuclear arms race. This generation is psychic or interested in the occult, mysteries, death, and rebirth. Sexuality was tempered by the AIDS crisis and the fear of death.

Generation Z 2005–present:
Pluto in Sagittarius
Pluto in Capricorn

Brings transformations in religion, philosophy, world affairs, higher education, and publishing such as the World Wide Web. This generation is adventurous, free-thinking, expansive and intensely interested in world affairs and philosophy.

It seems the generations receiving the most focus, in the media and elsewhere, are the Baby Boomers and Millennials. Most Boomers have Pluto in Leo, while Millennials generally have Pluto in Scorpio. Both of these signs are fixed, with Pluto being in its home sign in Scorpio.

Of course millennials and boomers are different: https://www.bloomberg.com/view/arti...d-boomers-are-different-but-not-why-you-think

Millennials and baby boomers are taught to hate each other—but they need each other to survive:

I have thought about this connection between these two generations quite a bit.

My husband and I have Pluto in Leo. And the South node in Leo.

Both our children, now grown, have Pluto in Scorpio. The generational influence, in terms of what the world was like, is so very different. But in many ways, much the same.

We were the 'Hippie' generation---:love:LSD, drop in and drop out, Protest Viet Nam, BeHereNow, don't marry- live together, smoke pot-dont drink, Question Authority, Equality for Women, Civil Rights , RocknRoll...

years later, the millennials, took all of that much further, and tested our limits --:alien: Their pot was so much stronger, their drugs- designer created, more intense, they questioned authority, and had google as their instant backup, many felt entitled-to the 8th house fruits of our labor, they continued the quest for civil rights and much expanded the list of those seeking equality, :innocent::sideways:

Jupiter and Saturn were the outermost VISIBLE planets in ancient times
and were called the "Great Chronocrators" by astrologers of old.
For millennia, the alignment of these two planets has been regarded
as a significator of great social, economic and political watersheds - historic turning points.

Jupiter's alignment with Saturn is occasionally repeated
due to a retrograde of one or both planets.
Each successive conjunction (not counting retrograde repeats)
occurs at a mean advance of approximately 243 degrees
relative to its predecessor
although from one alignment to the next this arc can vary considerably.
Every third conjunction
- once every 60 years
- brings the alignment back to its starting place, plus around 9 degrees:
this 60 year cycle is termed the first order recurrence of the conjunction.
Every 40th conjunction
- roughly once every 800 years
- brings the alignment back to within about 1 degree of its starting place:
this approximate 800 year cycle is termed the second order recurrence
astrologically known as the Great Mutation cycle.

FURTHERMORE

My ephemeris confirms that
Jupiter requires 12 years to orbit the Sun
and
Saturn requires 30 years to orbit the Sun
- additionally, during their respective orbits of the Sun
Jupiter and Saturn are in conjunction only approximately every 20 years.

These specific spans of time chime well with the accepted idea of “a generation”
being the span of time necessary
before human beings are physically able to produce a child of their own

12 is an age at which many humans are capable of reproduction
and therefore Jupiter's 12 year orbit around the sun
places Jupiter firmly in the category of a “generational” planet.
12 year old parents are not considered unusual in many eastern countries
BUT
in western countries it is considered child abuse/a criminal offence.
However, the worldwide reality is
that children aged twelve frequently do become parents
– perhaps more so in eastern rather than western countries.

Jupiter conjuncts Saturn only every 20 years
and on a worldwide scale
many become parents at that age.

Thus Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions are linked in "generational" terms

Saturn's 30 years orbit of the Sun is more representative of those
who choose to be parents at what westerners in general consider
"a more appropriate age" for the mature responsibility of parenthood.

and so
Jupiter & Saturn are “generational” planets
because
their respective orbits of the Sun
as well are their conjunctions
are in tune with the "generational aspects" of
human reproductive behavior

But what is meant by 'a generation'?

A generation averages about 25 years
from the birth of a parent
to the birth of a child
- although it varies case by case
it is generally accepted that the length of a generation
was closer to 20 years in earlier times
when humans mated younger and life expectancies were shorter.

Among present-day members of a contemporary hunter-gatherer people
of Botswana and Namibia
whose lifestyle is relatively similar to that of our Western pre-agricultural ancestors
the average age of mothers at the birth of their
first child was 20 years
and at the last birth 31, giving a mean of 25.5 years per female generation
which is considerably above the 20 years commonly attributed to 'primitive cultures'.
Fathers were six to 13 years older than mothers
giving a male generational interval of 31 to 38 years.
(source: sociologist Nancy Howell)

Alternatively,
population geneticists Marc Tremblay and Hélène Vézina
found a generational interval based on the years between parents’ and children’s marriages
to average 31.7 years
and they determined that male generations averaged
35.0 years
while female generations averaged 28.7 years.
(source: 100 ascending Quebec genealogies)

A separate study by Biological anthropologist Agnar Helgason and colleagues
who used the Icelandic deCODE genetics database
to arrive at a female line interval of 28.12 years for the most recent generations
and 28.72 years for the whole lineage length.
Male line lineages showed a similar difference
31.13 years for the recent generations
and
31.93 years overall.

For a more mathematically appealing average then
Helagason and fellow researchers recommended estimating female generational line intervals at 30 years
and male generational intervals at 35 years
- based on the Quebec and Iceland studies.

We need to remember that current understandings in physical and biological sciences
are subject to change as more data becomes available
and that data’s interpretation becomes more certain
.
So, for now, when genealogists want to convert generations to years
and create probable date ranges
using an evidence-based generational interval such as Helagason’s 30 and 35 years
- or even one developed based on your own family history research
may be the best solution.

I have looked up a Dutch article written by Spangenberg and Lampert that appeared in 2009 and referred to the sociology of/between 6 generations.

From an astrological perspective there is a strong correlation with the outer planets entering/through a sign, each bringing its own influence to it.

(Translation)
The pre-war generation born between 1910-1930.
Wars of social unrest and chaos. Dutiful, unobtrusive, humble, thrifty, resigned, strong sense of morality. Knowing one's place (position).

The silent generation - 1931-1940.
Know what it is to live with uncertainty, suppression and scarcity. The first generation in which women worked, giving economic independence.

The protest generation - 1941 -1955.
Also known as the 'baby boomers' generation.
Schooling in large classes, reaching maturity in a period of increasing prosperity, knew no poverty or unemployment. This generatoin was more critical than its parents.

The lostgeneration -1956-1970.
Also called the 'nothing' generation because there wewre few chances/opportunities in the employment sector. This generation is now in the top positions and very influential.

The pragmatic generation - 1971- 1985.
Children wanted (whenever) as a result of contraceptives. Grew up with excellent provision. Strongly make and media conscious. They are prone to
delay fundamental choices, such as children. Job hopping is normal for this group.

The boundless generation from 1986.
Also known as the 'back seat' generation. Focused upon appearance and looks, kicks, status, consumer and network, and not so much on personal well-being or that of society. The credit and economic crisis will leave its mark upon this generation.

Checking time-lines with the ephemeris, Neptune seems to be showing what its made of.

The 'millenium' generation might be the next considered? Neptune entered Aquarius in 1998.

I recognise myself in the baby boomer generation. Large classes were the norm, jobs were two a penny. Our generation 'had it better' than our parents .... in Europe anyway.....as rebuilding of stability occured everywhere. I was the first in my family to be able to afford to have a foreign (package) holiday, saving money each week for it instead of having only enough to spend on food.

Not all of us became 'the mods and rockers' and/or 'the hippie' generation.

This is very interesting, thank you. I think any planet past the asteroid belt could be considered "generational".
