Vedic Concepts

One of the great sources of knowledge of India are the Vedas.
Einstein said, 'Time is the fourth dimension'. The Vedas say that 'Time is the first dimension'.
The Vedas go on to say "In the beginning there was nothing".
The way the ancient Indians conceived of nothing is beyond the scope of modern man's thought process! In the Vedic system of thought, before there was time there was absolutely nothing. Their word for this is the Shoonya, which is sort of like the modern concept of Zero--complete silence.
[By the way, the Arabs are often credited with inventing the concept of Zero. Not so. Historically, Hindus were using the concept of Zero long before an Arab translator translated the word into his language.]
Only yogis who have attained the rare state they call Nir Vikalpa Samadhi. In modern times this is also shortened to the word Samadhi. The yogis claim that during Samadhi they experience nothing. Samadhi is a state beyond time, or a timeless state.

The Vedas claim that from this nothing cames a vibration known as the Pranava--the sound Aum. From this sound there emerges five symbolic instruments of creation of universes. From these instruments come the primordial forces known as Space, Time, Atmosphere, Light, Fire, Liquids, and the solidification of all. The mixing of these forces resulted in creation of the universes, as we know it now.
