Why Uvalde?
This could have happened anywhere so why specifically Uvalde?
Most probably almost everyone in the area will be effected in one way or the other by this tragedy so we can expect to find significant aspects to the chart of the town..
The chart is for the creation of the county, calculated for Noon.
Transiting Uranus almost exactly opposing natal moon.
Transiting SN near the cusp of the 3rd, elementary schools.
Transiting Pluto recently entered the natal 5th house of children.
The chart is for noon, so these two contacts could vary.
Transiting Jupiter on natal Jupiter, squaring natal mercury and Saturn and opposing natal mars.
On the day of the shooting transiting moon almost exactly on natal Neptune and squaring natal sun.

Can't be just a coincidence, can it!

This tragedy striking a specific town to such a major degree brings to mind the (supposed) soul agreement involved in plane/train/car crashes, or other major events where many lives are lost.

South node... Karmic debts.

Fixed star Algorab is conjunct the town's mars, opposing Jupiter.

Jupiter has a reputation for luck and expansiveness, but it repeatedly comes up in a not very positive sense. A bit delusional.

What would you consider the difference in strength between a Fixed star or an asteroid?
Would it depend on the star/asteroid itself, or on the aspect it makes?

For me, stars influence only through longitudinal conjunction or parallel of declination (although some believe they also influence by opposition).
Planets and other heavenly objects influence by various aspects (as well as by conjunction & parallel)

It just had a new moon.
Uranus is at 22 taurus in both the natal and progressed charts, and it is exactly conjunct transiting North node.
The natal chart has a mars/jupiter opposition, exactly sextile the progressed sun/moon.
Transiting mars/jupiter in conjunction are trine the progressed sun/moon, near conjunction with the natal Jupiter.
Jupiter is also spiritual.
There seems to be a purpose that we have yet to be able to understand, as to why this town was chosen as the place for this terrible tragedy.
Will there be a general spiritual awakening?

The 1856 chart is based on "The city was renamed Uvalde in 1856, when it was incorporated and named county seat. "

In theory, they could both give us pertinent info.

I would use the very first naming of the city chart as the radical one, modified by the later incorporation chart, possibly making a composite of them for best accuracy.

What role di a mercury retrograde play in this tragedy?
Some odd bits and pieces picked up here and there, all relatable to mercury not functioning well.
Given the continual posting of news, some of these might be modified as information is released, but for the moment they are listed as reported.

- The elementary school doors were locked, but a teacher forgot her cell phone in her car, went out the back door to go to her car to get it. To assure she could re-enter she blocked the door open, and this is how the shooter managed to enter the school. (teacher/cell phone/cars/memory... all mercury elements).

- The school security organisation had 6 guards to cover 8 schools, the school where the tragedy occurred was not covered.

- When a first call came into security about a possible shooter outside the school, a guard drove by to check it out. The shooter hid behind a car, the guard didn't see him, and moved on, reporting a false report.

- The event was reported to the police as a hostage situation, not an active shooter, changing the actions taken by first responders.

- The various first responder teams were not able to communicate between themselves, creating confusion and loss of reaction time. There has now been a request for funds to install a communication system that will link all the responder groups on the same system.

-Funds were also request for the construction of a mental health hospital in the Uvalde area.
Mental disturbances, mercury.

- Not sure how specific this is to mercury, but the Markle visit that was supposed to put the Duchess in good light as some kind of spiritual leader, completely backfired and she has been globally criticised, especially by the local community.

- Children locked in the classrooms continued calling 911 asking for police to come, but the calls were ignored.

There may be more links, but it does seem mercury retrograde played an important role in what happened.

With regard to the spiritual influence of Jupiter.
The actor Matthew McConaughey, born in Uvalde, spoke about the tragedy during a session of the WH press office.
The theme is "Where to go from here"?
He mentions that all the parents of victims that he spoke with all had the same idea.... that the dreams of their children would not be forgotten, but would live on.
A spiritual awakening.
He says this event was different, maybe this time we can find a path forward.
A way to keep our children safe.
Was this one of the purposes of this terrible tragedy?
