It was an especially bright nova in May of 1866, the beginning of the Panic of 1866.
The bank failures in London caused foreign imports to Britain to be reduced to an extreme degree and did not reach pre-panic levels for about 40 years.
On the positive side the Bank of England's moves in response eventually made the sterling pound the international currency.
