Signs of depression in birth chart?

hello guys,

I was wondering.. is it possible to find depression in one's chart?

I'm asking because it's been a while I believe i'm in depression and I was curious if there's some sign in my chart. I feel i'm pretty much invisible to people around me and it seems like people don't care much about me, so I'm contantly left out or alone - even though I'm surrounded by people I feel alone all the time.

So, my question is: is there a sign in birth charts that shows some kind of tendecy for depression?

I'd appreciate any kind of help here ;)

I don't think there is just one placement, which corresponds to psychologists telling us that there are different types of depression with different causes. I've seen it show up with sun square Neptune, hard Mercury-Saturn and sun-Saturn aspects, and other placements.

There is hope and help.

Would you mind posting your chart and telling us a bit about why you think you have depression?

Hey there,

Depression can show up in different ways, but like waybread said, a lot aspects associated with Saturn can add to it, as the planet usually acts as a "parent" or "lesson teacher" to whatever it hits. Essentially, that can lead to a feeling of restriction or negativity. A lot of also depends on the nature of the individual.

I've seen it come out a lot when two planets of very different energies are opposing or squaring one another. But that's only been in my personal experience.

Hope this helps!

hello waybread. thank you for answering.
I've searched for these placements in my birth chart, but I don't have them. I guess that makes sense that there's not only one placement indicating depression. maybe searching for the challenges the birth chart presents and the ways each person deals with them?

Here follows my birth chart. I have this feeling I have depression because sometimes it seems like people don't care much about me and I feel invisible and lonely. then I believe I'm not good enough to have friends and someone who loves me. and because of this I believe I'll be alone forever, so things will never change (they have always been like this). so I see myself without hope and good perspectives about life - especially because Cancer is very strong in my chart, and I want a family and people around me.

thank you for answering, nystateofmind.
I see saturn has good placements in my birth chart (with sun and mercury at least), except with venus. even with the trines with sun/mercury, do you think saturn could be a problem?

I think it's your T-square, notably involving your Cancer moon-Chiron in the 12th house, conjunct your ascendant, and opposed by Neptune.

I have looked at a number of charts of people with mental health issues, and the moon is often, though not always involved in a difficult configuration. A Cancer moon is exceptionally strong, being in the sign it rules. Your feelings, moods, and needs are simply stronger than most people's. But add to your moon its conjunction with Chiron. Chiron shows us "where it hurts," and the emotional wounds that don't heal.

Chiron does promise wisdom and compassion out the other end of the tunnel, provided you are willing to stay emotionally open and to learn from Chiron's hardships. Add the Mars square, and your feelings are probably very volatile, with a tendency to mentally beat yourself up.

Then add to this the Neptune opposition. Neptune is not a realistic planet. It is a planet of beautiful illusions and bitter disillusionment, somehow missing grounded reality in the middle. Neptune was the Roman sea god, and its waters tend to dissolve what they touch. This configuration can make it hard for you to gain any validation for your moods and feelings. Neptune also opposes your ascendant, so it is hard to get a realistic sense of other people. Does he like me? Is she my enemy? With Neptune, it is just too hard to know for certain.

12th house people tend to be very private, and actually most comfortable behind-the-scenes. Then a hurting Cancer moon can so easily retreat behind her thick shell, fearful of coming out, and perhaps only snapping her claws occasionally when Mars gets activated.

The invisibility effect you mentioned is heightened by your strong 12th house placements.

Some types of depression have a physical cause, so it would be good to make an appointment with a family doctor, explain that you think you're depressed; and ask for a referral to a specialist. Sometimes people are depressed principally because they don't think their lives are going well, and they fear they will never improve. In this case, the referral might be to a clinical psychologist.

Oftentimes people with depression benefit from yoga and outdoor exercise, which can be as simple as a brisk walk outside everyday.

Also, your heavily tenanted 12th-6th house axis has been called a "serve or suffer" lifetime. A Cancer moon does know how to come from a place of universal love for people. You are probably highly intuitive about other people's pain. Becoming altruistic and looking for ways to serve people less fortunate than yourself (through work or volunteering)
should be beneficial.

But the kicker is that your Leo sun (also strong in its own sign) longs for visible self expression, and other people's admiration. Yet your sun and moon have to work together somehow. If you can think of yourself as being a blessing to people who are shut-in, hospitalized (12th house matters) or seemingly misfortunate in some way, your Leo sun will gain a lot of recognition, plus a chance to exercise your inner generosity of spirit.

With Mars and Pluto also in the signs they rule, you actually have a strong chart. Something is boxing you in, and if you can determine what it is that does that, you can throw your energy into mitigating it.

In the meantime, see what small steps you can take to feed your inner sea-creature and lioness! Don't be afraid to pamper yourself: these things don't have to be expensive. For Leo, wear some gold jewelry, and look for ways to feel playful. For Cancer, if you live near a body of water and can spend some time with it, you should find it therapeutic. Leo especially needs some of the fire element in its life, which in the winter can be hard to find via ordinary sunshine. Light candles at your dinner table, or in the evening. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, light a fire in the evening. For Cancer, try a soothing bubble bath or an aquatic exercise class. These are only suggestions-- you get the picture.

Particularly see how to exercise that angular Mars in Aries. You do have a woman warrior inside: she'll be thrilled to get out, occasionally.
