.....................doesn't Saturn sometimes give great wealth and power to nativities, and doesn't he sometimes cause great afflictions? Yes, of course, but that has to do with his harmonious or disharmonious relationship with the planet/angle/lot through the different aspects and natures of the subjects. So combining essential and accidental dignity into the same concept does not prevent us from making these distinctions, while I would argue that too much emphasis on the essential dignity could prevent someone making this distinction in the particular cases - for example when it helps rank with trine to the Sun from Aquarius by day, but causes divorce with square to the Moon in a dual sign in a male nativity, Aquarius is not going to help the first and mitigate the latter, I argue that is going to increase and actualize the effects of both.

Powerful Saturn at the nativity does not mean that it will give only very good or very evil at all times (though it certainly can exceed in one direction), if you use the recasting of horoscopes at solar and lunar revolutions, planets change their powers, which allows for differentiation in the chronocratorship. You can't make this important differentiation if you only use primary directions, profections or what have you with the nativity though.

Of the seven metals, Saturn rules lead
which has a very dull surface
and makes a thick, heavy sound when struck.
Lead is also the heaviest, the most stable
and the most inert metal
the traditional metal of tombs.

Lead poisoning was originally referred to as 'Saturnism'
because the physical ailments of ingesting small quantities of lead include
fatigue, depression and melancholia.
Lead collects in bone tissue
and is more prevalent in the bones of old people than those of the young.

Nick Kollerstrom in his book ASTROCHEMISTRY
explores the link between Saturn, lead and Saturnism
reminding us that the effects of lead poisoning
are to 'slow down' the mental processes of the mind.
Saturn also rules all ordinary country stones that have no glitter and shine.
It is said to rule the dross of all metals and the dust, ash and rubbish of everything.
It does however, have some rulership over diamonds
the hardest mineral, derived from crystallised carbon.

Lead, and zinc are effective moss control elements. They protect what is below them by leaving a covering on top and killing any organism that tries to grow underneath it by leaching when it rains.🙂

Traditionally
SATURN, SOLE DOMICILE RULER OF AQUARIUS rules LEAD
Lead is a highly toxic metal and a very strong poison.
Lead poisoning is a serious and sometimes fatal condition.
It occurs when lead builds up in the body.
Lead is found in lead-based paints
including paint on the walls of old houses and toys.

.

While being toxic, it is very used in our society. Old water lines have lead underground on the way to your home. Lead is used in soldering. Lead is used for some roof flashing. Especially in high rain areas. Leaded goblets have a nicer tone when you drink a toast. I checked a set for tone a while back. They were a G.

US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention & World Health Organization

state that
a blood lead level of 10 μg/dL or above is a cause for concern
however, lead may impair development
and
have harmful health effects even at lower levels
and there is no known safe exposure level

SATURN SOLE DOMICILE RULER OF FIXED AQUARIUS

The Tetrabiblos presented some of
the earliest negative perceptions
of SATURN’s astrological characteristics

Ptolemy called Saturn malefic, deadly and the bringer of evil:

‘...IF IT HAPPEN THAT SATURN BE IN FIXED SIGNS

and
in quartile
or opposition
to the Sun,
and
contrary in condition,
he will produce death by suffocation
occasioned either by multitudes of people
or by hanging or strangulation…
if in Virgo or Pisces, or watery signs
and configurated with the Moon
he will operate death by means of water, by drowning and suffocation....’

the following traditional HELLENISTIC methodology

clearly highlights for interested readers
how SATURN SOLE DOMICILE RULER OF AQUARIUS
is associated with skin TONE

Introduction to Hellenistic Astrology Part II - Seven Stars

Saturn completes 2 sidereal cycles and 57 synodic cycles with 59 years.
It has retreating arcs of 7 degrees for 140 days.

Saturn.... .....makes those born under him dark-skinned....

A few tips when assessing
"....blackness/whiteness..." aka "....darkness/lightness..."
"...fairness/darker complexion..." of skin TONES

keep in mind that
it's not unusual

for children of the same race
to be fairer or darker complexioned than their siblings

So within the race of white/whitish people
some siblings are darker/lighter complexioned than others
and likewise
within the race of black/blackish people
some siblings are darker/lighter complexioned than others
and so for example
for rectification purposes

Focusing on height, weight, bone structure, eye colour
gives overall good results

Hey, JA.
Thank you for this; very interesting and informative.
I wonder what your thoughts are, how you might reconcile Deborah Houlding's comments below about the significator of the mother/father with what you have written?

Is it perhaps that you are describing the 4th as partaking of the parents, and thus, mother and father?
Thank you.

THEMA MUNDI in Hellenistic astrology
illustrates positions of the seven visible classical planets
at the beginning of the universe
tsmall commented that
if you look at the Thema Mundi 4th house
Libra
is ruled by Venus
one of the traditional significations of the mother
4th house is "Everything that relates to the foundation and roots of our existence. Parents in general and fathers in particular; grandparents and ancestry. Paternity (inheritance from parents) as well as the psychological parental influence."
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/temples/h04.html

10th house is " The desire to achieve and give out to the world - whereas the lower midheaven indicates the roots of our existence from which we emerge, the midheaven indicates that which we manifest outwards into our community and the fruits of our labour. Ancient authors recognised its influence on many matters, including marriage and children. Traditionally it is the house of the mother."
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/temples/h10.html

also Libra is the exaltation of SATURN.
SATURN (the father) has natural affinity with 4th
and
is exalted by Venus
in the house that signifies "home/roots"
also gives us Saturn's affiliation with death
as the 4th represents death among other significations
