The log file showed a date in 1970 and had a coin cell error.
This is also known as a CMOS battery and stores startup settings in volatile memory.
When the power fails in that battery
and AC voltage is lost, it returns the date to the default of 0
as well as wiping other settings.
A date of 0 in Unix converts to 01-01-1970 because that is where it starts counting.
That would indicate that the battery was dead - they last 3-5 years
- removed intentionally to delete the previous log file,
to revert other settings to defaults resulting in an unintentional deletion of the log files.
In order to preserve logs dated 1970, it had to be powered on, creating the log,
then had the battery changed or reconnected.
Programs that execute code based on any comparison of the date
would crash or glitch if the date was outside of an expected range.
Generally programmers will only check from the date they wrote that piece of code
because time travel isn't possible
people forget all of the scenarios that can occur with hardware and default system settings.
