A brief history of Greek Astrology

by Thomas Gazis, greekastrology.gr

We all know that astrology flourished in ancient Greece, particularly in the so called Hellenistic period. The legacy of the ancient Greeks was subsequently inherited by the Byzantines (whom we can define as “the Middle Ages Greeks”). For a thousand years astrology remained relatively stagnant in Constantinople and in Greece.

Most of Greece was under foreign rule from the 12th century on, culminating with the Turkish domination from 1453 until 1821. Astrology was not studied or practiced much during that period. And even after 1821 there was little stimulus to revive it, for nearly a century and a half. Beginning in the late 1950’s Sun sign forecasts began to appear in some popular magazines and newspapers. But the true revival of astrology in Greece came about through the efforts of a lady named Maria Metallinou. In her youth she had become interested in astrology and maintained that interest through her polytechnic studies in northern Europe. In the early 1960’s she studied with the Faculty of Astrological Studies. Turning back in Greece she was assisted in her calculations and interpretations by the Director of the Athens Astronomical observatory Konstantinos S. Chasapes, who had a secret flair for astrology! In 1969 Metallinou founded “Oroskopio”, the first astrological magazine in modern Greece. Her untimely death, though, caused the magazine’s demise. Other magazines were started later but most of them did not survive. However, interest in astrology has revived in Greece. Today 5 astrology magazines and numerous books are published. Greeks, as always, are highly individualistic and still no formal Federation of Greek astrologers has been established!
