There has been some discussion of this topic on the forums, but I forget in exactly which thread it occurred. A few members argued that only conjunctions to the nodal axis were significant, but quite a few others--myself included--believe that square aspects should also be taken into consideration since planets that form this aspect to the nodal axis occupy a critical space between the North Node and the South Node, or between the past and the future.
I'm not sure how obvious the affects of the softer aspects would be, but if any planet was to get one's attention, my bets would be on a heavyweight like Pluto! :13:

my transiting north node just finished opposing my natal north node in the 7th house in leo.

I've never consciously experienced a nodal opposition, but I recently experienced a nodal return--and I must say, I was a bit disappointed that no obviously karmic event occurred. This is not to say that you won't have a more exciting experience, though...

Next year it will cross my ascendant, after a conjunction also with venus.

I also experienced this transit somewhat recently when the North Node went from early Aries to late Pisces, and again, nothing of note happened. I'm starting to think I may simply be unobservant
