dating equals 5th house or 7th?

Generally speaking, when one is asking about dating another person, someone not known well, do we use the 5th house? If I was to ask, will i have a relationship with this person, of course i'd use 7, but what about...will we have a date?

If you can call the person by name, always use the 7th.

As dating is a recreational activity, the date itself would be signified by the h5 cusp, and the quesited the seventh, as Tik has said above.

I personally would use the 7th as well, because it represents the house of "other people" in general . William Lilly states: it gives judgement of Marriage and describes the person inquired after, whether it be Man or Woman. All manner of Love questions, our public enemies, in astrology the artist him/herself. So in fact he says every other person inquired after is designated to the 7th.
For the 5th house he only writes about children, pregnancy, wealth of the father (2nd of the 4th), health and sickness of his son or daughter etc. but he does not say anything about romantic adventures and dating. I think this was actually added later (and also in view of natal astrologies 5th house which relates to romance amongst other things).
So I guess we have made it difficult for ourselves in including the 5th house as signifying a lover.
In Barbh's case I also would use the 7th.

5th is for romance and dating (that is supposed to be a pleasurable persuit), if you are asking "how the date will go" "will dinner be fine"? In the question "will the dating lead to relationship" there would be a connection between 5th 7th and 1st somehow; "will I have sex with Cathy" will involve the same significators.

I think if you are inquiring about dating in general - "will I be dating next year", then the 5th may be permissible. But if you ask about anybody in particular, even if you don't know their name - "the chick on the bus is really cute, should I ask her name and on a date", use the 7th. Remember also the sign on the 7th and the position of its ruler and aspect to it and the cusp, indicates what we look for in a partner. That includes just dating partners.
