Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Hey all, I've decided I'm going to start learning horary, and master it.
I've been studying for a few days online, and I have some pretty good notes, but I want some "live" advice on what I need to know/do. The basics? Check. I'm talking procedure, technique, etc. What steps should I take in judging a horary chart? In what order? What's more important?
I've read a few different "intro to horary" articles and they all are in different order, emphasizing different things. So give me your opinions, oh ye masters of the craft!

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
I'll start with the a little.
Well first you check for radicality.. whether the lord of hour and ascendant ruler are in agreement. Doing horary for years though, from experience it's not going to stop you from being able to make a judgment.
After that define the significators.. who is the querent and what house represents the questited. The Moon and significators should be relevantly placed.. another part of 'radicality'. The Moon I'm sure you know doubles as the querent's sig. and general indicator of the situation and how it will pan out. See whether or not the Moon is void of course.
Judge the houses of the significators. Good houses or bad? Bad usually helps towards a bad outcome, good, vice versa.
Then see the aspects between the significators if any. Judge the reception if any between the significators. Judge how the reception (if any) affects the aspect. See if the aspect actually perfects.
That's some basics ..

Thanks!
But what about the dreaded Considerations Before Judgment?!?

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Yeah, you also want to check to see if the ascendant is too early (0-3) or too late (27+). Saturn in the 7th house as a consideration that you might be "off". I'm just giving you practical horary info from someone whose been doing it a long time .. most of it is following protocol and not going to effect judgment. The strongest consideration before judgment is the late degree. That's something I have seen to be an almost "don't bother interpreting this chart" consideration. The early degree charts have always been readable to me.
If you want a full list check out The Doctrine of Horary Questions by John Gadbury (I think that's what it's called). It's a free word document on skyscript you can download and has been really helpful to me. Another nerdy thing you can do to drill horary into your head is writing out Bonatti's 120 Horary Considerations. Very tedious and actually repetitive but drills some principles into your mind.
I'm just giving you stuff to get started on. Let me know what else you want to know about.. I'll give you the "textbook" answer and the "real-life" answer from my experience.
http://www.skyscript.co.uk/texts.html
Horary is easy in a way, what makes it difficult is having to retain lots of knowledge.

Actually none of those things are important.
To practice horary you need:
1) an Ephemeris
2) A Table of Hours
3) A Table of Essential Dignities
Without those three things you're basically driving with your eyes closed, in the dark, wearing sunglasses and a blindfold.
To determine if a chart is radical, you have to know the Hour Ruler, and to know the Hour Ruler you need a Table of Hours and know how to calculate it.
Without a Table of Essential Dignities, you can't identify Peregrine Planets and you can't tell if there's Reception between Planets in aspect.
Without an ephemeris, you can't tell if Planets are Slow or Fast. You'll have to look at the Noon/Midnight position on the day and day after and calculate it.
A Slow Moon is equivalent to a Retrograde Planet. A Slow Cadent Peregrine Moon is essentially useless.
You need to know your Hemispheres, Quadrants/Quarters, Masculine/Feminine Signs, Houses, Quadrants/Quarters, Diurnal/Nocturnal, Oriental/Occidental (and how it affects Significators), Dignities of all Planets, Cadent Signs, Friends & Enemies, all the definitions (Frustration, Refrenation, Return of Light, Transfer of Light, Collection of Light and Cutting-off of Light -- and you need an ephemeris for some of those), when a Malefic is a Fortune, when a Benefic is an Infortune, the 17 different ways the Moon is useless, the Moon's Quarters, the 6 different ways Planets as Significators are useless, Triplicities, Almutens, hyper-extended House meanings and be able to derive Houses and the hyper-extended meanings of the Planets (the Sun represents persons of a certain age group, husband, father, son, other male family, member, other male, employer, co-worker, head-of-state, business executive, children, your reputation, your standing in your community, your credit, etc and a dozen other things -- it isn't necessary to memorize them but it is necessary to be aware of the possibilities)
Fixed Stars can make a difference, and Arabic Parts are indispensable for certain Questions.
Basically, you need to learn Traditional Astrology.
The true Art of Horary is not simply being able to determine the three possible answers, "Yes, indeed," "Yes, but you'll regret it the rest of your life," and "Not unless Hell freezes over," rather the true is determining Why, How and When and if there are problems, Who or What.

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Just one thing about the planetary hours: if you use them, be sure that they are based on actual Sun/Cosmos time, rather than on man-made civil time. All internet planetary hour calculators are set to exact Civil time, when in fact sunrise and sunset can actually occur from a minute or two earlier or later, up to 15 or 16 minutes earlier or later, depending upon the day of the year. So, if using planetary hours to determine radicality, you must add the "Daily Sun Data" (google it) listing to your other basic equipment.
(PS: I myself do not use planetary hours in horary; but then the methods I follow in horary are quite alternative, and they are not intended for beginning students of horary astrology)

Thanks, Solastro. I would love to buy the book, however I am on a tight budget of 0 dollars.
Neptune, that's one of the articles I have already read. Thanks though.
Bob, thank you for the list. I'm pretty good with the essential dignities, and most of the basics you listed, however I understand your point. On collection, translation, etc. those are all things I'm studying right now. The things I don't know for sure are the "17 ways the moon is useless" and "6 ways significators are useless", unless you're talking about the finding the radicality and/or considerations before judgment, which I am trying to learn. Would you mind explaining those, either here or in a private message, or maybe giving a link where I could learn more about them?
I've been studying traditional astrology for about a year, I just don't feel like I'm going anywhere with it, I mean I have all the basics down but I don't feel ready to start trying natal charts, so I figured I would start with horary, be able to do that easily, and then move on to natal. On top of that, I don't have any extra money to put towards study, so I have to do everything by the internet, which I know is not a great place to learn, but I'm pretty discerning when it comes to the content of a site. Anyway, this is just my situation, and I hoped by posting in the Horary board, some of the members on here who regularly practice horary could giveme some practical advice about what to study and in what order. So I thank you.

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Tik, thanks. I've lightly read through Christian Astrology, but I plan to really study Book II. But, currently I'm reading Gadbury, so I'll start Lilly after.
I'm just afraid of missing something important. I want to be sure I know everything I need to study, in what order, etc. so that if I have any problems I'll know it's just me, rather than me not having read or studied something which I should have.

well if you have questions just post the page number and the book title and maybe a chapter title where you got the quote from so whoever read William Lilly can explain to you a bit better. If we dont know, Skyscript people will def know.

What say you all about this article? Very interesting to me. I took a break from Gadbury to read it, and now I think I'll start with Bonatti instead.

Anima Astrologiae... Is that bad?
[Edit: I guess I should clarify here: Anima Astroligae, or Guide for Astrologers, is by Lilly and Coley. It is extracts from Bonatti's work, Book of Astronomy.]

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Well, Bob, after reading through Bonatti a bit, it's obvious that is where you got your "list". Wouldn't it have been easier to just say "Hey, why don't you take a look at Bonatti, he gives a pretty good overview of what you need to know"? Thanks anyway, though. I always appreciate your advice (and attitude).

Wow, eta, you've been pretty busy!
Thanks for giving those links, I've been pretty hungry for a good ancient text read. Anyway you seem to have the voracious attitude which will really help .. I'd start doing horaries right away and applying what you're reading.

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Haha, yeah, unemployment is wonderful for studying.
My problem is, I have to read through things at least twice, to make sure it "sticks". I still want to finish my notes on Bonatti before I start anything else, but due to unexpected plans that's pushed back by at least a few more days, so it looks like I'm taking a little break.
Anyway, I wanted to post what I had here, for others and also for myself, so I could have it all listed on a page instead of just hidden in my bookmarks.
Thanks for the encouragement. I think I want to start with "example charts" already on the web, that have been quoted by Lilly, whomever, if that makes sense... And plus I don't want to judge a chart here and get someone's hopes up and then turn out being totally wrong, at least not until I feel more confident.

Re: Beginning Horary Studies ... Tell Me What I Need To Know!
Finished round one of my notes. Go me.
Now I just have to back through them and "re-note". Why do I do this to myself? Ugh.
